datang and mendatangi: Verb Family and Usage in Malaysian Malay

Datang presents an arriving mover and normally expresses the destination with ke. Derived mendatangi makes the destination, person, or host a direct object, while passive didatangi centers that affected host. Kedatangan names an arrival, berdatangan presents many arrivals in succession, and pendatang is a socially loaded noun for a newcomer or migrant.

The family demonstrates how morphology shifts prominence among mover, destination, and host. The forms do not conjugate for person or tense, and the closest English word cannot decide which one is appropriate. General affix formation belongs to the voice system; this page treats the family's established frames and collocations.

ContextMalay patternMeaning source
habitSaya datang setiap minggu.setiap minggu

Tetamu datang lebih awal daripada waktu yang dinyatakan pada jemputan.

The guests arrived earlier than the time stated on the invitation.

Kami akan datang semula minggu depan untuk mengambil dokumen asal.

We will come again next week to collect the original documents.

Datang does not acquire an ending corresponding to comes or came. Aspect and time expressions remain separate: sudah datang, baru datang, akan datang.

datang profiles the mover

The subject of datang is the person or thing arriving. Use ke for a destination and dari for a source.

Pegawai kesihatan datang ke kampung itu untuk menjalankan pemeriksaan percuma.

Health officers came to the village to conduct free examinations.

Bas itu datang dari Kuala Terengganu dan berhenti di sini selama sepuluh minit.

The bus comes from Kuala Terengganu and stops here for ten minutes.

Boleh awak datang ke pejabat saya selepas makan tengah hari?

Can you come to my office after lunch?

English come depends strongly on speaker viewpoint. Malay datang also orients toward an arrival point established in discourse, but speakers can use it flexibly when the destination is salient. Pergi profiles departure or movement away; tiba emphasizes reaching the endpoint. The page on pergi develops that contrast.

The root also appears in compounds such as akan datang “coming/upcoming”: minggu akan datang “the coming week.” Here akan and datang remain separate words.

datang, tiba, and sampai view arrival differently

Datang profiles movement toward an established place or social visit. Tiba profiles the endpoint—the moment someone or something reaches it—and is common in timetables and formal narration. Sampai also means arrive/reach and is broadly neutral, especially in conversation.

Tetamu kami datang dari Melaka untuk menghadiri majlis keluarga.

Our guests came from Melaka to attend the family gathering.

Kereta api dijangka tiba di Butterworth pada pukul tujuh dua puluh minit pagi.

The train is expected to arrive in Butterworth at 7:20 a.m. (formal announcement)

Telefon saya sebaik sahaja awak sampai di hotel.

Call me as soon as you arrive at the hotel.

All three can translate English arrive in some contexts, but their collocations differ. Waktu ketibaan is scheduled arrival time; kedatangan tetamu is the guests' coming/visit; sudah sampai is the ordinary message “have arrived.” Do not generate one derivative as a replacement for every member of the semantic set.

Fixed expressions with datang

Selamat datang is the conventional welcome given to an arriving person. It is a fixed greeting, not a statement that the person's arrival was “safe.”

Selamat datang ke pusat latihan kami; sila daftar di kaunter sebelah kanan.

Welcome to our training center; please register at the counter on the right.

Datang bulan is an established (informal/euphemistic) expression for menstruation. Its meaning is lexicalized and unrelated to an ordinary monthly visit. Datang akal is not freely generated for “an idea came”; Malaysian Malay normally says terlintas dalam fikiran or mendapat idea according to context.

The expression yang akan datang means upcoming/future: tahun yang akan datang. These idioms show why family members and multiword expressions need to be learned in context.

mendatangi makes the host or destination an object

Mendatangi removes the ordinary ke phrase and makes the approached place, person, or group a direct object. It is common in careful reporting and often suggests deliberate, repeated, or consequential approach.

Penduduk mendatangi pejabat daerah untuk mendapatkan penjelasan tentang notis tersebut.

Residents went to the district office to obtain an explanation about the notice. (formal)

Petugas perubatan mendatangi setiap rumah yang terjejas selepas banjir.

Medical workers visited every affected house after the flood. (formal)

Kawanan gajah liar mendatangi kebun itu pada waktu malam.

A herd of wild elephants approached the orchard at night.

Compare datang ke pejabat with mendatangi pejabat. The first neutrally locates arrival; the second packages the office as the visited target. In ordinary Malaysian conversation, speakers often prefer datang ke or pergi ke. Mendatangi is standard but especially useful in formal narratives where the affected destination matters.

💡
Do not add ke before the direct object of mendatangi. Choose either datang ke pejabat or mendatangi pejabat, according to which participant you want to foreground.

didatangi centers the affected host

Passive didatangi makes the person or place receiving the arrival the subject. The visitor may follow oleh.

Pejabat itu didatangi puluhan pemohon pada hari pertama pendaftaran.

The office was visited by dozens of applicants on the first registration day.

Rumah mereka didatangi pegawai kebajikan selepas kejadian tersebut.

Their home was visited by welfare officers after the incident.

The construction often presents the arrival from the host's perspective and can imply impact, surprise, or a large number, although those nuances come from context. Write passive didatangi solid. Locative di pejabat keeps di separate.

mendatangkan: causing an arrival or result

Mendatangkan adds a causer. It can describe arranging for a person or object to come, but its most frequent formal collocations concern producing an effect.

Penganjur mendatangkan jurulatih dari Sabah untuk mengendalikan bengkel tersebut.

The organizers brought in a trainer from Sabah to conduct the workshop.

Pelaburan dalam penyelenggaraan awal dapat mendatangkan penjimatan dalam jangka panjang.

Investment in early maintenance can bring long-term savings. (formal)

Kelewatan itu mendatangkan kesulitan kepada penumpang yang mempunyai penerbangan sambungan.

The delay caused difficulties for passengers with connecting flights. (formal)

The collocations mendatangkan faedah/manfaat, mendatangkan kerugian, and mendatangkan kesulitan should be learned as result expressions rather than literal motion.

kedatangan and berdatangan

Kedatangan names the event of arrival or a visit. The arriving participant can follow it as a possessor-like complement.

Kedatangan tetamu dari luar negara itu disambut oleh seluruh keluarga.

The arrival of the guests from overseas was welcomed by the whole family.

Kami sedang membuat persediaan untuk menyambut kedatangan musim tengkujuh.

We are preparing for the arrival of the monsoon season.

Berdatangan presents people or things arriving in numbers, one after another, or from different directions.

Orang ramai mula berdatangan sebaik sahaja pintu pameran dibuka.

People began arriving in numbers as soon as the exhibition doors opened.

Ucapan tahniah berdatangan daripada rakan-rakan di seluruh negara.

Messages of congratulations came in from friends throughout the country.

The plural/distributive meaning belongs to the established form; do not use berdatangan for one isolated guest.

pendatang and social labels

Pendatang can neutrally mean a newcomer: pendatang baharu di kampung itu. In migration discourse, however, pendatang asing and especially the abbreviation PATI for pendatang asing tanpa izin carry legal, political, and sometimes stigmatizing force. Use the term required by the factual context, not as a generic label for any foreign resident.

Sebagai pendatang baharu di taman perumahan itu, mereka memperkenalkan diri kepada jiran-jiran.

As newcomers to the housing estate, they introduced themselves to their neighbors.

For employment and human-centered reporting, pekerja migran “migrant worker” is often more precise than pendatang asing. Pelarian, pemohon suaka, ekspatriat, and pelajar antarabangsa name different legal or social categories and are not synonyms.

Common Mistakes

1. Adding ke after mendatangi

❌ Penduduk mendatangi ke pejabat daerah pada waktu pagi.

Incorrect valency—mendatangi takes the destination directly.

✅ Penduduk mendatangi pejabat daerah pada waktu pagi untuk membuat aduan.

Residents went to the district office in the morning to make a complaint.

2. Leaving mendatangi without its direct object

❌ Penduduk mendatangi pada waktu pagi untuk membuat aduan.

Incomplete—the transitive verb mendatangi requires the approached host or destination.

✅ Penduduk datang ke pejabat daerah pada waktu pagi untuk membuat aduan.

Residents came to the district office in the morning to make a complaint.

3. Making the mover subject of passive didatangi

❌ Pegawai itu didatangi pejabat daerah.

Incorrect roles—the passive subject is the host that receives a visit.

✅ Pejabat daerah itu didatangi pegawai kesihatan semalam.

The district office was visited by health officers yesterday.

4. Confusing a concrete arrival with the person noun

❌ Pendatang bas itu lewat selama setengah jam.

Incorrect noun—pendatang refers to a person/newcomer, not the arrival event of a bus.

✅ Kedatangan bas itu tertangguh selama setengah jam kerana kesesakan.

The bus's arrival was delayed by half an hour because of congestion.

5. Using berdatangan for one person

❌ Seorang tetamu berdatangan pada pukul tujuh.

Incorrect number construal—berdatangan presents multiple or successive arrivals.

✅ Para tetamu berdatangan selepas majlis dibuka kepada orang ramai.

The guests arrived in numbers after the event was opened to the public.

Key Takeaways

Use datang (+ ke) to profile an arriving mover, mendatangi + object to profile a deliberately approached host, and didatangi when that host is passive subject. Mendatangkan introduces a causer or resulting effect, kedatangan names arrival, and berdatangan presents successive or numerous arrivals. Pendatang has socially specific meanings that require precise context. None of these forms changes for person or tense.
