berdiri and mendirikan: Verb Family and Usage in Malaysian Malay

The diri family begins with upright position and extends metaphorically to establishment and conviction. Berdiri means “stand/be standing,” mendirikan means “erect, establish, or found,” didirikan centers what was established, pendiri names a founder, and pendirian is a stance or settled position. English uses several unrelated-looking words; Malay preserves the conceptual link between standing something upright and giving an institution or belief a firm basis.

For the neighboring contrast between getting up and standing upright, see the bangun family.

No person or tense conjugation

The family form does not change with person or time. Separate aspect and time expressions establish the reference point.

FunctionPresent/generalPast contextFuture context
intransitive stanceSaya berdiri di luar.Tadi saya berdiri di luar.Esok saya akan berdiri di pintu utama.
transitive establishmentMereka mendirikan pusat itu.Mereka telah mendirikan pusat itu.Mereka akan mendirikan pusat itu.
passive establishmentPusat itu didirikan.Pusat itu telah didirikan.Pusat itu akan didirikan.

Berdiri, mendirikan, and didirikan are complete forms, not conjugated tense forms. Tadi, telah, esok, and akan remain separate.

Berdiri: be upright or rise to one's feet

Berdiri is intransitive: the subject assumes or maintains an upright posture. It does not take the thing erected as a direct object.

Semua penumpang berdiri apabila tempat duduk sudah penuh.

All the passengers stood when the seats were full.

Dia sedang berdiri di hadapan kaunter sambil memegang dua buah fail.

She is standing in front of the counter while holding two files.

Sila berdiri apabila nama anda dipanggil.

Please stand when your name is called.

The form can describe a position or transition into that position. Context distinguishes “be standing” from “stand up.” For an explicit transition, bangun berdiri or berdiri dari kerusi may be used.

Pak Rahman berdiri dari kerusinya lalu menyambut tetamu itu.

Mr Rahman rose from his chair and welcomed the guest.

💡
Do not treat berdiri as an infinitive meaning “to stand.” It is an intransitive lexical verb whose unchanged form fits commands, ongoing scenes, past narratives, and future plans.

Mendirikan: make something stand or establish it

Mendirikan is transitive. Its object is the structure, organization, or institution brought into being.

Penduduk kampung bergotong-royong mendirikan sebuah balai kecil berhampiran sungai.

The villagers worked together to erect a small hall near the river.

Tokoh pendidikan itu mendirikan sekolah pertama di daerah tersebut pada tahun 1952.

The educationist founded the first school in that district in 1952.

Mereka bercadang mendirikan koperasi untuk membantu pengusaha kecil.

They plan to establish a cooperative to help small entrepreneurs.

The required mendirikan sekolah is not merely physical construction. It can mean founding the institution. With a wall, tent, or pole, the physical “set upright/erect” sense is more prominent; with a school, association, or company, establishment is central.

Malaysian Malay often uses membina for ordinary physical construction and menubuhkan for formally establishing an organization. Mendirikan remains standard, but its collocational fit must be learned rather than selected solely because English says build or found.

Didirikan: center the structure or institution

Passive didirikan makes the erected or founded entity the subject. Prefix di- is attached to the verb.

Sekolah itu didirikan oleh penduduk setempat lebih enam puluh tahun lalu.

The school was founded by local residents more than sixty years ago.

Khemah kecemasan didirikan di padang sekolah sebelum hujan turun.

The emergency tent was erected on the school field before it rained.

Pertubuhan tersebut didirikan untuk melindungi hak pekerja ladang.

The organization was founded to protect plantation workers' rights. (formal)

Compare didirikan di padang: passive didirikan is solid, while locative di padang is separate. The same spelling distinction holds in every tense-free context: telah didirikan di..., akan didirikan di....

Pendiri and the Malaysian preference pengasas

Pendiri names a person who establishes an institution or movement. It is an established family member, especially in formal or historical writing. Malaysian Malay very often uses pengasas as the ordinary noun “founder.”

Sebagai pendiri persatuan itu, beliau masih dihormati oleh ahli-ahli lama.

As the founder of the association, he is still respected by its long-standing members. (formal)

Pengasas syarikat tersebut memulakan perniagaan itu dari rumahnya.

The founder of the company started the business from her home.

The alternatives overlap, but pengasas syarikat is a particularly safe Malaysian collocation. Pendiri makes the family connection to mendirikan transparent and may suit elevated accounts of institutions, schools, or movements.

Pendirian: a stance or settled position

Pendirian is lexicalized as an opinion, policy stance, or principled position. It is not simply the physical act of standing.

Pendirian saya tentang perkara itu tidak berubah sejak mesyuarat lalu.

My position on that matter has not changed since the last meeting.

Kerajaan akan menjelaskan pendiriannya dalam sidang media petang ini.

The government will explain its position at this afternoon's press conference. (formal)

Beliau berpegang teguh pada pendirian bahawa semua kanak-kanak berhak menerima pendidikan.

She firmly maintains the position that every child has a right to education.

Pendirian saya identifies the view I stand by. Common collocations include menyatakan pendirian, mengubah pendirian, berpegang pada pendirian, and pendirian tegas. Learn these as lexical patterns; an English noun such as position can also mean a job or physical location and will then require a different Malay word.

💡
The metaphor is productive but not mechanical: a person physically berdiri, someone mendirikan an institution, and a decision-maker holds a pendirian. Each member has its own valency and collocations.

Established expressions

Berdiri sendiri means stand independently or be self-contained. Berdiri teguh can describe literal firmness or metaphorical resilience. Mendirikan rumah tangga means establish a household and, in context, marry; mendirikan solat is an elevated/religious collocation meaning perform or establish the ritual prayer.

Perniagaan kecil itu kini mampu berdiri sendiri tanpa bantuan geran.

The small business can now stand on its own without grant assistance.

Mereka merancang untuk mendirikan rumah tangga selepas tamat pengajian.

They plan to marry and establish a household after completing their studies.

Umat Islam mendirikan solat berjemaah di masjid tersebut.

Muslims perform the congregational prayer at that mosque. (religious/formal)

These expressions should not be translated by replacing each English word independently. Rumah tangga is a lexical compound for household, and mendirikan solat belongs to a specific religious register.

Common Mistakes

1. Giving berdiri a direct object

❌ Mereka berdiri sebuah sekolah di kampung itu.

Incorrect—berdiri is intransitive and cannot mean ‘found a school’ with this object.

✅ Mereka mendirikan sebuah sekolah di kampung itu.

They founded a school in that village.

2. Adding tense endings

❌ Semalam dia berdiried di luar selama sejam.

Incorrect—Malay verbs do not take an English past ending.

✅ Semalam dia berdiri di luar selama sejam.

Yesterday he stood outside for an hour.

3. Using pendirian for a physical location

❌ Pendirian kereta saya di belakang bangunan.

Incorrect lexical choice—pendirian means a stance or position of belief, not a parking location.

✅ Kereta saya diletakkan di belakang bangunan.

My car is parked behind the building.

4. Separating passive di-

❌ Khemah itu di dirikan di tepi padang.

Incorrect spacing—the passive verb didirikan is one word.

✅ Khemah bantuan itu didirikan di tepi padang.

The relief tent was erected at the edge of the field.

5. Choosing pendiri automatically for every founder

⚠️ Dia pendiri syarikat teknologi itu.

Understandable and standard, but pengasas is often the more idiomatic neutral Malaysian choice for a company founder.

✅ Dia pengasas syarikat teknologi tempatan itu.

She is the founder of that local technology company.

Key Takeaways

Use intransitive berdiri for an upright person or entity and transitive mendirikan for erecting or establishing an object. Passive didirikan keeps its prefix attached. Pendiri means founder, though Malaysian pengasas is often more idiomatic, while pendirian is a lexicalized stance or principled position. Time and person never change these forms.
