English between and among do not map neatly onto one Malay form. The useful Malaysian distinction is conceptual: bare antara sets up a relation, contrast, range, or selection, whereas di antara presents something as located within a physical or conceptual set. Both are standard; adding di everywhere does not make a sentence more complete.
For the broader location system, compare static di and container-like dalam.
Jarak antara Kuala Lumpur dan Bandung melebihi seribu kilometer.
The distance between Kuala Lumpur and Bandung exceeds one thousand kilometres. (neutral)
The cities are endpoints in a measured relation, not a container in which jarak sits. This is why bare antara is natural.
Bare antara structures a relation
Use antara before two endpoints, categories, alternatives, or participants whose relationship is being described. Contemporary Malaysian texts contain both antara X dan Y and antara X dengan Y. DBP-oriented house styles commonly prefer paired antara ... dengan for exactly two endpoints or a comparison. Dan remains widespread with named endpoints and naturally closes a list of three or more, so editing must distinguish a house-style preference from what speakers and published texts actually use.
Hubungan antara harga dan permintaan tidak selalu mudah diramalkan.
The relationship between price and demand is not always easy to predict. (formal/academic)
Rundingan antara pihak majikan dengan kesatuan pekerja akan disambung esok.
Negotiations between the employer and the workers' union will resume tomorrow. (formal)
Saya masih memilih antara menaiki kereta api atau memandu sendiri.
I am still choosing between taking the train and driving myself. (neutral)
With alternatives, antara X atau Y is frequent, while antara X dengan Y also occurs. In tightly edited prose, memilih X atau Y often avoids an unnecessarily mixed pairing. Do not mechanically impose an English rule that between must involve exactly two items: Malay antara can relate more than two named parties or categories.
Perjanjian itu melibatkan kerjasama antara Malaysia, Thailand dan Indonesia.
The agreement involves cooperation among Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia. (formal)
It also forms fixed relational expressions: antara lain “among other things,” antara satu sama lain “one another,” and di antara satu sama lain is generally unnecessary for reciprocity.
Ahli pasukan perlu saling mempercayai antara satu sama lain.
Team members need to trust one another. (neutral)
Di antara locates within a set or space
Di is the free locative preposition, so it is written separately: di antara, never diantara. Use the phrase when the image is “at a position amid these things” or “one member within this group.”
Sebuah lorong kecil terletak di antara bank dengan klinik itu.
A small lane lies between the bank and that clinic. (neutral, physical location)
Di antara pelajar yang hadir, hanya Farah pernah melawat Sabah.
Among the students present, only Farah had visited Sabah. (neutral)
Cadangan itu paling praktikal di antara semua pilihan yang dibincangkan.
That proposal is the most practical among all the options discussed. (common contemporary usage; careful editors often prefer antara here)
In careful editing, the last example can often be made more compact as antara semua pilihan because a superlative selects from a set rather than literally occupying a location. The strict DBP-oriented convention also reserves di antara for complements construed as having space or distance. Contemporary Malaysian usage nevertheless extends di antara to membership in an abstract or human set, especially when that set is strongly foregrounded. The core contrast is semantic, but genre and house style affect where editors draw its boundary.
Compare the following pair:
Perbezaan antara kedua-dua kaedah itu kecil.
The difference between the two methods is small. (a relation)
Fail biru itu terselit di antara kedua-dua buah buku.
The blue file is wedged between the two books. (a location)
English uses between in both. Malay reveals whether the speaker construes a relation or a position.
Antara is not the same as di tengah
Di tengah means “in the middle/centre” and suggests a central position. Di antara only locates something with reference to surrounding members or endpoints; it need not be equidistant.
Kedai itu berada di antara pejabat pos dengan stesen, tetapi bukan betul-betul di tengah.
The shop is between the post office and the station, but not exactly in the middle. (neutral)
For an event amid circumstances, di tengah-tengah can mean “in the midst of”: di tengah-tengah kesibukan. Do not substitute it when you merely mean a relation between variables.
Ranges and discourse frames
Bare antara can specify an approximate range. The endpoints normally belong to the same scale.
Masa perjalanan biasanya antara empat puluh dengan lima puluh minit.
The journey usually takes between forty and fifty minutes. (neutral)
Mesyuarat itu dijadualkan antara pukul dua hingga pukul empat petang.
The meeting is scheduled between two and four in the afternoon. (formal; range wording)
The second pattern is common, although editors may prefer the structurally simpler dari pukul dua hingga pukul empat when exact endpoints matter. Antara lain introduces non-exhaustive examples (formal/neutral):
Antara lain, laporan itu mencadangkan tambang yang lebih rendah untuk pelajar.
Among other things, the report recommends lower fares for students. (formal)
Common Mistakes
1. Adding di to every translation of “between”
❌ Perbezaan di antara kedua-dua rancangan itu jelas.
Poor choice in careful prose—the noun perbezaan names a relation, not a location.
✅ Perbezaan antara kedua-dua rancangan itu jelas.
The difference between the two plans is clear. (neutral)
2. Omitting di for a literal position
❌ Kereta saya diletakkan antara dua buah lori itu.
Unclear in careful standard prose—the intended meaning is physical location.
✅ Kereta saya diletakkan di antara dua buah lori itu.
My car was parked between those two lorries. (neutral)
3. Attaching a free preposition
❌ Dia duduk diantara Amir dengan Siti.
Incorrect spelling—locative di is a separate word.
✅ Dia duduk di antara Amir dengan Siti.
He sat between Amir and Siti. (neutral)
4. Using di tengah for any abstract relation
❌ Hubungan di tengah kos dengan mutu perlu dikaji.
Incorrect—the phrase describes a relation, not a central spatial position.
✅ Hubungan antara kos dengan mutu perlu dikaji.
The relationship between cost and quality needs to be studied. (formal)
Key Takeaways
Use bare antara to build relations, alternatives, comparisons, reciprocal links, and ranges. Use di antara when locating something within endpoints or identifying a member within a set. The boundary can shift with construal, especially for abstract sets, but the core contrast—relation versus location—predicts Malaysian usage far better than the English between/among distinction.
