Pantun: Pembayang, Maksud, and Grammatical Parallelism

A four-line pantun is compact, but it is not merely a short statement with two decorative lines attached. Its opening couplet, the pembayang, establishes sound, rhythm, imagery, and often structural expectations; its closing couplet, the maksud, delivers the communicative point. The original pantun below was written for this guide, so it is copyright-safe and can be analyzed as a complete text.

The original pantun

Anak merbah hinggap di titi,
Air mengalir menuju paya;
Pesan ibu terpahat di hati,
Ilmu menjadi bekal berjaya.

This is (literary) Malay. Its grammar is intelligible in contemporary Standard Malaysian Malay, but the last line is compressed for rhythm and should not be copied unchanged into an ordinary report.

Literal and poetic translations

LineClose literal translationGrammatical role
Anak merbah hinggap di titiA young bulbul perches on the footbridgepembayang; noun phrase + verb + location
Air mengalir menuju payaWater flows toward the marshpembayang; noun phrase + verb + goal
Pesan ibu terpahat di hatiA mother's advice is engraved in the heartmaksud; noun phrase + stative ter- form + location
Ilmu menjadi bekal berjayaKnowledge becomes a resource for successmaksud; compressed purpose relation

A poetic English rendering might be:

A young bird rests upon the crossing,
The water seeks the marsh below;
A mother's counsel stays within us,
And knowledge equips us on our way.

The poetic version preserves movement, inward memory, and the idea of intellectual provision, but it does not reproduce the Malay end rhyme. Translation involves a genuine trade-off: a line-by-line gloss reveals the grammar, whereas a poem may preserve effect by changing its wording.

Four lines, two couplets, one interpretive movement

Anak merbah hinggap di titi.

A young bulbul perches on the footbridge. (literary image; ordinary word order)

Air mengalir menuju paya.

Water flows toward the marsh. (literary image)

The first two lines are the pembayang. Merbah names a kind of bulbul, and titi is a narrow bridge or footbridge. These words build a recognizable natural scene rather than an abstract argument. The sequence moves from a bird pausing on a crossing to water continuing toward a marsh.

Pesan ibu tetap terpahat di hati.

A mother's advice remains engraved in the heart. (literary metaphor)

Ilmu menjadi bekal berjaya.

Knowledge becomes a resource for success. (literary compression)

The final two lines are the maksud. Advice remains inwardly present; knowledge equips a person for future effort. The opening scene does not encode a single secret answer. Instead, hinggap suggests a temporary stopping place, mengalir introduces onward movement, and the closing couplet recruits those images for a journey shaped by memory and learning.

💡
Do not ask only “What does the pembayang mean?” Ask what expectations it creates: which sounds recur, which phrase shapes return, and what movement or contrast the maksud can reinterpret.

The ABAB rhyme and sound correspondences

The line endings form a clear ABAB pattern:

LineEndingRhyme set
1titiA
2payaB
3hatiA
4berjayaB

The A pair shares final -ti, while the B pair shares -aya. Pantun practice is richer than matching the last written letter; poets attend to final sound, rhythm, and the shape of the whole line. This original poem uses a transparent correspondence suitable for learners.

titi — hati

footbridge — heart; the A rhyme pair

paya — berjaya

marsh — succeed; the B rhyme pair

These pairs also cross the couplet boundary. A sound introduced in the image is answered in the message. The listener therefore hears the maksud as structurally prepared rather than simply appended.

Parallel phrase shapes create a bridge

Lines 1 and 3 have comparable frames:

Anak merbah / hinggap / di titi.

A young bulbul / perches / on the footbridge. (constituent divisions)

Pesan ibu / terpahat / di hati.

A mother's advice / is engraved / in the heart. (parallel constituent divisions)

Both begin with a two-word noun phrase, continue with a predicate, and end with di + location. Their meanings differ, but the shared grammatical silhouette invites the reader to compare titi, a physical place of support and crossing, with hati, the metaphorical location of remembered advice.

Lines 2 and 4 likewise begin with a short subject and present a movement or development:

Air / mengalir / menuju paya.

Water / flows / toward the marsh. (parallel analysis)

Ilmu / menjadi / bekal berjaya.

Knowledge / becomes / a resource for success. (literary compression)

The parallel is not mechanical identity. Mengalir is an active intransitive process, while menjadi links ilmu to a new role, bekal. What matters is that both lines move from a compact subject toward an endpoint: water has a destination, and knowledge has a future function.

That is the distinctive force of pantun parallelism. Image and message need not paraphrase one another. Their comparable forms make them available for interpretive comparison. See parallel clause structures for the non-poetic system.

Word order, inversion, and poetic licensing

This pantun mostly retains ordinary Malay order. A more strongly inverted (literary) variant of the first line could be:

Di titi hinggap anak merbah.

On the footbridge perches a young bulbul. (literary inversion)

The fronted location di titi and postposed subject anak merbah foreground the scene and can help a poet satisfy rhythm or rhyme. In ordinary prose, Anak merbah hinggap di titi is the unmarked order. A translator must label the inversion instead of silently presenting it as everyday syntax.

Malay literary tradition also permits omission where the relation remains inferable. The last line compresses a purpose relation:

Ilmu menjadi bekal untuk mencapai kejayaan.

Knowledge becomes a resource for achieving success. (expanded neutral prose)

The poem omits untuk so that berjaya remains at the rhyme-bearing end and the line remains compact. In careful explanatory prose, restore it. The compressed form is not a general rule that every bare verb after a noun expresses purpose.

Similarly, pesan ibu is structurally ambiguous outside context: it can mean “a mother's advice” or, in another construction, involve the verb pesan “order/remind.” Here its position as the subject of terpahat and the thematic relation to hati establish the noun reading.

terpahat: a resulting state, not an explicit agent

Pesan ibu terpahat di hati.

A mother's advice is engraved in the heart. (literary metaphor)

The ter- form terpahat presents the advice as stably engraved or impressed. The line does not name an engraver. English often selects a passive “is engraved,” but Malay terpahat emphasizes the resulting state rather than an event performed by an expressed agent.

Kata-kata itu masih terpahat dalam ingatan saya.

Those words are still etched in my memory. (neutral/literary metaphor)

This metaphor also occurs outside pantun. Di hati is more affective; dalam ingatan explicitly locates something in memory. The poem chooses the culturally familiar heart image because parental advice is both remembered and valued.

Reading the pembayang without reducing it

The opening couplet is neither meaningless filler nor a code with one fixed solution. Some pantun establish a strong semantic analogy; others rely more heavily on sound, conventional imagery, or parallel form. In this poem, a temporary perch and flowing water make the closing themes of guidance and continued movement easier to imagine, but a reader may emphasize different parts of that relation.

An English-speaking learner may be tempted to summarize only the final two lines: “A mother's advice and education help one succeed.” That gives the proposition, but it removes the patterned experience by which the pantun makes the proposition memorable.

💡
The prose paraphrase is an explanation, not a replacement. Keep both: the pantun shows how sound and structure carry meaning, while prose states the relationship without poetic compression.

Common Mistakes

1. Calling the pembayang meaningless filler

❌ Dua baris awal tidak mempunyai fungsi; buang sahaja.

Incorrect analysis—the opening couplet establishes rhyme, imagery, rhythm, and parallel expectations.

✅ Pembayang menyediakan bunyi dan bentuk yang dijawab oleh maksud.

The pembayang supplies sounds and forms answered by the maksud. (literary analysis)

2. Silently normalizing inverted order

❌ Di titi hinggap anak merbah ialah susunan biasa dalam semua perbualan.

False—the location-first, subject-late order is marked here.

✅ Anak merbah hinggap di titi ialah susunan prosa yang tidak bertanda.

A young bulbul perches on the footbridge is the unmarked prose order.

3. Treating poetic ellipsis as a universal rule

❌ Saya belajar bekal berjaya.

Incorrect ordinary prose; the intended purpose relation is not licensed by copying the poetic omission.

✅ Saya belajar untuk memperoleh ilmu sebagai bekal supaya berjaya.

I study to gain knowledge as preparation for success. (neutral prose)

4. Translating only the moral

❌ Pantun ini hanya bermaksud bahawa ilmu itu penting.

Too reductive—it discards parental advice, movement, rhyme, and the image-to-message bridge.

✅ Pantun ini menghubungkan perjalanan alam dengan pesan ibu dan ilmu sebagai bekal hidup.

This pantun connects movement in nature with a mother's advice and knowledge as provision for life. (interpretive paraphrase)

Key Takeaways

The pantun's four lines divide into pembayang and maksud, but the two halves remain connected by ABAB rhyme and parallel phrase shapes. Titi/hati and paya/berjaya carry sound across the boundary, while repeated subject–predicate frames invite comparison between landscape and life. Inversion and ellipsis are real poetic resources, but they must be identified as (literary) rather than silently taught as neutral prose.
