pe-, pel-, and per- Nouns: Productivity and Register

The nonnasal pe-/pel-/per- family sits at the boundary between morphology and stored vocabulary. Familiar nouns such as pekerja, pelajar, petani, pesakit, and perokok are fully ordinary, and speakers recognize connections with kerja, belajar, tani, sakit, and rokok. That recognition does not make the pattern freely available for inventing a new role noun whenever English uses -er.

This page focuses on productivity, compounds, and register. For the shapes of the derivatives, see formation and allomorphy; for their role meanings, see roles and lexical families.

Productive schema, restricted output

A genuinely productive affix can be extended to a new base with predictable form and meaning. This family is only partly productive in that sense. It helps speakers analyse established words and sometimes supports terminology, but many potential combinations remain absent, marginal, humorous, or semantically unpredictable. Modern role nouns often use productive peN-, a compound, orang yang... “person who...,” pengguna “user,” peserta “participant,” or a borrowed occupational term instead.

Two tempting learner coinages illustrate the limit. *peZoom for “Zoom user/participant” and *pepodsiar for “podcaster” are not standard Malaysian role nouns to use merely by analogy with perokok. In the intended senses, write pengguna Zoom, peserta mesyuarat dalam talian, or an attested occupational label such as pengacara siniar, depending on the actual role. The asterisk marks a constructed form, not recommended Malay.

Para pengguna aplikasi itu perlu menetapkan semula kata laluan masing-masing.

Users of the application need to reset their respective passwords. (formal/technical)

Peserta mesyuarat dalam talian diminta mematikan mikrofon ketika tidak bercakap.

Participants in the online meeting are asked to mute their microphones when not speaking. (formal/online meeting)

💡
Use morphology to recognize a word; use a current Malaysian dictionary or an authoritative terminology source to decide whether you may produce it. Interpretability is not the same as conventionality.

Established nouns build compounds freely

Although the derivational pattern is restricted, an established noun can combine productively with modifiers. Malay normally places a classifying or descriptive element after the head: pekerja kilang, pelajar universiti, petani kecil, pesakit luar, and perokok tegar. The compound tells the reader what subtype of an already recognized role is intended.

Head nounEstablished combinationsTypical domain

petanipetani kecil, petani mudaagriculture and development
pesakitpesakit luar, pesakit dalam, pesakit kronikhealth care
perokokperokok tegar, bekas perokok, perokok pasifpublic health

Majikan perlu menyediakan kontrak yang jelas kepada pekerja sambilan.

Employers need to provide clear contracts to part-time workers. (formal/workplace)

Universiti itu menawarkan program orientasi kepada pelajar antarabangsa.

The university offers an orientation programme to international students. (formal/educational)

Skim tersebut membantu petani kecil membeli benih dan peralatan.

The scheme helps small-scale farmers buy seeds and equipment. (formal/news)

Pesakit luar boleh mengambil ubat di farmasi selepas berjumpa dengan doktor.

Outpatients can collect their medicine at the pharmacy after seeing the doctor. (formal/health care)

Bekas perokok itu berkongsi pengalamannya dalam program berhenti merokok.

The former smoker shared his experience in a smoking-cessation programme. (formal/public health)

The modifier can also precede when it is a recognized quantifier or status marker, as in bekas pelajar “former student,” para pekerja “the workers,” and seorang petani “a farmer.” Do not mistake the productivity of these noun phrases for productivity of the derivational prefix itself.

Newspaper and official usage

News, administration, education, labour policy, and public health rely heavily on these nouns because institutions categorize participants. Pekerja tempatan, pelajar sekolah, petani muda, pesakit diabetes, and perokok tegar are compact labels that can recur across a report. In such contexts the nouns are neutral to formal, not archaic.

Kementerian sedang meneliti langkah untuk meningkatkan perlindungan sosial pekerja gig.

The ministry is examining measures to improve social protection for gig workers. (formal/news)

Menurut laporan itu, bilangan perokok remaja menurun berbanding dengan tahun sebelumnya.

According to the report, the number of teenage smokers fell compared with the previous year. (formal/news)

Persatuan petani meminta proses permohonan bantuan dipermudah.

The farmers' association asked for the aid application process to be simplified. (formal/news)

Official terminology can stabilize a derivative or compound by repeatedly assigning it one institutional definition. Pesakit luar and pesakit dalam, for example, belong to a health-care classification; their meanings are not obtained by translating outside patient and inside patient word for word. Learn the full term and the institution that uses it.

Workplace and conversational alternatives

In a workplace, pekerja is ordinary when employment status or a group matters. Speakers may use a specific job title—juruteknik, pemandu, jururawat, pegawai—when the function matters more. In conversation, a clause with kerja, belajar, sakit, or merokok can sound more relevant than assigning a category.

Ada tiga pekerja baharu masuk hari ini, termasuk seorang juruteknik.

Three new workers started today, including a technician. (informal/workplace)

Anak awak belajar di mana sekarang?

Where is your child studying now? (informal conversation)

Anak saya pelajar tahun akhir di Universiti Malaya.

My child is a final-year student at the University of Malaya. (neutral conversation)

Dia tak merokok lagi sejak awal tahun.

He hasn't smoked since the beginning of the year. (informal)

The conversational clause answers what happened or what someone does; the noun answers what role is relevant. English speakers sometimes overuse the noun because English readily says I'm a student or he's a smoker. Both Malay constructions are available, but discourse—not a preference for nominal predicates—determines the natural choice.

Competition with peN- and other role labels

The nonnasal and nasal families can coexist around one conceptual field without being interchangeable. Pekerja is a worker or employee; pengerja is a much more restricted noun for one who carries out or works something and is not the ordinary substitute for pekerja. Pelajar is a student; pengajar is an instructor. The choice is lexical and semantic, not a stylistic variant.

Pekerja makmal mengikuti arahan pengajar sebelum menjalankan eksperimen.

The laboratory workers followed the instructor's directions before conducting the experiment. (formal/educational workplace)

Newer occupations may instead use internationally recognizable loans or Malaysian compounds: pempengaruh “influencer,” pencipta kandungan “content creator,” and pembangun perisian “software developer.” The first and third show nasal peN- allomorphy; the second is a compound. There is no requirement that a semantic “doer” enter the nonnasal family.

💡
Record the head together with common modifiers: pekerja sambilan, pelajar antarabangsa, petani kecil, pesakit luar, perokok tegar. Collocations reveal current usage more reliably than a guessed derivation.

Malaysian standard and neighboring cognates

Malay and Indonesian share much of their morphology, but a recognizable cognate is not automatically the normal Malaysian term. Indonesian perajin “craftsperson” is standard in Indonesian; edited Malaysian usage normally selects an attested Malaysian expression such as pengusaha kraf, pembuat kraf, or tukang kraf, with the choice depending on whether the person runs an enterprise, makes the object, or practises a trade. Label perajin (regional: Indonesia) rather than presenting it as an ordinary Malaysian member of this family.

Historical dictionaries may also list role nouns with (archaic) or source labels. Such a form is evidence about the history of the pattern, not permission to use it in a modern job advertisement. When PRPM or a Malaysian dictionary marks an entry ark or Id, preserve that label and choose the current Malaysian equivalent unless discussing the older or neighboring variety itself.

The native per- branch shows the same need for register judgment. Pertapa remains recognizable in religious, historical, and literary narrative. Perburu is dictionary-listed for a person who berburu, but pemburu is much more usual for “hunter” in contemporary general prose. A dictionary entry establishes that a form exists; it does not make that form equally current in every genre.

Common Mistakes

1. Coining a role noun solely from an English -er word.

❌ PeZoom itu belum membuka kameranya.

Incorrect learner coinage — use pengguna Zoom or peserta mesyuarat, depending on the role.

✅ Peserta mesyuarat itu belum membuka kameranya.

The meeting participant has not turned on their camera yet. (neutral/online meeting)

2. Choosing pekerja when a specific professional title is needed.

❌ Pekerja itu akan memeriksa pendawaian bangunan.

Too vague in a work order — identify the responsible technician when that role matters.

✅ Juruteknik elektrik itu akan memeriksa pendawaian bangunan.

The electrical technician will inspect the building's wiring. (formal/workplace)

3. Replacing pelajar with pengajar.

❌ Semua pengajar perlu menghantar tugasan sebelum hari Jumaat.

Wrong role noun if the instruction is addressed to students; pengajar means instructors.

✅ Semua pelajar perlu menghantar tugasan sebelum hari Jumaat.

All students must submit the assignment before Friday. (formal/educational)

4. Importing a neighboring-standard role noun without a regional label.

❌ Program itu melatih perajin tempatan.

Not the ordinary standard Malaysian choice for the intended sense; perajin is Indonesian usage.

✅ Program itu melatih pembuat kraf tempatan.

The programme trains local craft makers. (formal; Malaysian usage)

5. Treating a compound's modifiers as optional decoration.

❌ Semua pesakit perlu dimasukkan ke wad.

Overgeneralized — outpatients are not normally admitted; the intended category must be named.

✅ Semua pesakit dalam perlu ditempatkan di wad yang sesuai.

All inpatients must be placed in an appropriate ward. (formal/health care)

Key Takeaways

  • The family supports analysis of established nouns but does not freely generate every new occupational label.
  • Established heads combine productively in compounds such as pekerja sambilan, pelajar antarabangsa, and pesakit luar.
  • Institutional terminology can stabilize a narrow meaning; learn the compound as well as its parts.
  • Conversation often uses a plain clause where official or news prose uses a role label.
  • Verify new formations in a Malaysian source and mark Indonesian, historical, or regional cognates explicitly.
  • Treat the small per- branch as register-sensitive: an attested form such as perburu need not be the ordinary present-day choice.
