Malay forms most word-written ordinals by attaching the bound prefix ke- to a cardinal numeral: dua → kedua, tiga → ketiga, and sepuluh → kesepuluh. The spelling tells you that this ke- is morphological. It is part of one numeral word, unlike the directional preposition ke “to,” which remains a separate word before a destination.
This page concentrates on formation and Rumi spelling. The meaning page explains ranking and complete-set readings, while lists, dates, and formal reference covers digits, Roman numerals, and names.
The basic attachment rule
In analysis, write ke- + dua → kedua so that the morpheme boundary is visible. In an actual sentence, write the derived word solid. No initial consonant disappears, and ke- has no nasal allomorphs.
| Cardinal base | Analysis | Ordinal form | Typical gloss |
|---|---|---|---|
| dua | ke- + dua | kedua | second |
| tiga | ke- + tiga | ketiga | third |
| sepuluh | ke- + sepuluh | kesepuluh | tenth |
| seratus | ke- + seratus | keseratus | hundredth |
Pintu kedua di sebelah kiri menuju ke bilik mesyuarat.
The second door on the left leads to the meeting room.
Calon ketiga akan ditemu duga selepas waktu rehat.
The third candidate will be interviewed after the break.
Dia menamatkan perlumbaan itu di tempat kesepuluh.
She finished the race in tenth place.
Pelanggan keseratus menerima baucar istimewa.
The hundredth customer received a special voucher.
English changes two to second and three to third, then usually adds -th. Malay is morphologically more regular from kedua onward. The apparent exception is the ordinary word for “first.”
Pertama and the limited role of kesatu
The normal all-purpose ordinal for rank one is pertama “first” (neutral): anak pertama, kali pertama, peringkat pertama. Kesatu is dictionary-recognized and structurally regular, but it is much less usual in ordinary Malaysian phrasing. It appears most naturally where a tightly parallel or explicitly numbered series motivates the form (formal/technical). It should not replace pertama indiscriminately.
Ini kali pertama saya memandu ke Kota Bharu.
This is the first time I have driven to Kota Bharu.
Dalam langkah kesatu, asingkan semua dokumen yang belum ditandatangani.
In step one, separate all documents that have not been signed. (formal/technical)
Even in instructions, langkah pertama is entirely natural and usually smoother. The value of kesatu is not that it is “more correct”; it makes the first item formally parallel with kedua, ketiga, and subsequent labels. English learners should therefore memorize pertama as the default rather than derive “first” mechanically.
Compound numeral bases
For a multiword numeral written out in letters, ke- attaches to the first written component and the rest of the numeral phrase keeps its ordinary spacing. Thus the ordinal corresponding to dua puluh satu is kedua puluh satu, not ke dua puluh satu and not one enormous word.
| Cardinal phrase | Ordinal phrase | Boundary analysis |
|---|---|---|
| dua puluh | kedua puluh | ke- + dua puluh |
| dua puluh satu | kedua puluh satu | ke- + dua puluh satu |
| seratus | keseratus | ke- + seratus |
| seratus satu | keseratus satu | ke- + seratus satu |
Persidangan kedua puluh satu itu akan berlangsung di Kuching.
The twenty-first conference will take place in Kuching. (formal)
Pasukan itu menduduki tempat kedua puluh satu dalam pertandingan tersebut.
The team placed twenty-first in the competition.
The principle is morphological attachment plus normal phrase spacing. Seratus is already one word, so keseratus is one word. Dua puluh satu remains three components; only the first carries the prefix.
This produces a useful bracketing contrast. In kedua puluh satu, the prefix scopes over the complete numerical value “twenty-one,” even though it is visibly attached only to dua. It does not mean “second, twenty, one,” and the later components are not separately ranked. English signals the same value through the compound twenty-first; Malay lets normal numeral syntax remain visible inside the larger ordinal.
Do not confuse word formation with digit style
When the base is an Arabic digit, standard spelling uses a hyphen: ke-2, ke-10, ke-100. That is an orthographic interface between letters and numerals, not a different spoken prefix. The form ke2 lacks the required boundary, while ke 2 wrongly treats the prefix as free. Detailed choices among word forms, digits, and Roman numerals belong on the advanced usage page.
Sila rujuk rajah ke-3 sebelum memasang penutup.
Please refer to the third diagram before installing the cover. (formal/instructional)
When spoken, rajah ke-3 is read as rajah ketiga. English writes 3rd with a suffix after the digit; Malay places ke- before it. Copying 3rd into a Malay sentence is not Malaysian number style.
The digit notation is especially useful when a document contains many cross-references, because readers can scan numerals faster than long words. That typographic motivation does not change the grammar: perenggan ke-12 and perenggan kedua belas have the same ordinal structure and are read with the same Malay words.
Bound ke- versus directional ke
Ordinal ke- and directional ke are homophonous but structurally distinct.
| Item | Category | What follows | Spelling |
|---|---|---|---|
| ke- | bound ordinal prefix | a numeral base | solid with a word; hyphenated before a digit |
| ke | directional preposition | a destination or direction | separate |
Selepas kelas kedua, Farah terus pulang ke rumah.
After the second class, Farah went straight home.
Here kedua is one ordinal word; ke rumah is a prepositional phrase. A simple diagnostic is semantic: if the phrase answers “which one in the sequence?”, it may contain bound ke-; if it answers “where to?”, it uses separate ke. See the wider di/ke spacing guide.
The distinction survives when both meanings involve a number. Pergi ke Blok Dua contains separate directional ke followed by the place name Blok Dua; pergi ke blok kedua contains the same preposition plus an ordinal noun phrase. The first ke remains separate in both, while only ordinal kedua contains a bound prefix.
The surface form does not settle the whole meaning
Ketiga by itself is an ordinal: anak ketiga “third child.” To denote the complete set of three, standard Malaysian Malay normally reduplicates the cardinal portion: ketiga-tiga anak “all three children.” The prefix remains attached only to the first copy, and the repeated part is joined with a hyphen. In the same way, kedua-dua means “both.”
Anak ketiga mereka sedang belajar di Johor Bahru.
Their third child is studying in Johor Bahru.
Ketiga-tiga anak mereka sedang belajar di Johor Bahru.
All three of their children are studying in Johor Bahru.
This contrast shows why ke- alone does not guarantee one interpretation. Position after the noun strongly supports an ordinal reading; pre-nominal reduplicated forms select a complete set. The meaning page develops this distinction.
Common Mistakes
1. Writing bound ke- as a separate word.
❌ Mesyuarat ke dua bermula pada pukul tiga.
Incorrect — ke- is a bound prefix before a word-written numeral.
✅ Mesyuarat kedua bermula pada pukul tiga.
The second meeting begins at three o'clock.
2. Joining the directional preposition to its destination.
❌ Kami berjalan kerumah nenek selepas makan malam.
Incorrect — directional ke is a separate preposition.
✅ Kami berjalan ke rumah nenek selepas makan malam.
We walked to Grandmother's house after dinner.
3. Treating every ke-number form as a complete-set expression.
❌ Buku ketiga merujuk kepada ketiga-tiga buah buku.
Incorrect interpretation — buku ketiga identifies the third book in an order, not all three books.
✅ Ketiga-tiga buku itu sudah dipulangkan.
All three books have been returned.
4. Using English digit suffixes in Malay.
❌ Sila baca perenggan 4th.
Incorrect — Malay does not add the English suffix -th to a digit.
✅ Sila baca perenggan ke-4.
Please read the fourth paragraph. (formal/instructional)
5. Forcing kesatu into ordinary first-rank phrases.
❌ Ini kali kesatu saya menaiki feri.
Marked and unnatural in this everyday context — pertama is the normal choice.
✅ Ini kali pertama saya menaiki feri.
This is my first time taking a ferry.
Key Takeaways
- Attach word-written ke- directly: kedua, ketiga, kesepuluh, keseratus.
- Use pertama as the ordinary word for “first”; kesatu is restricted and often series-driven.
- In a multiword numeral, only the first component receives ke-: kedua puluh satu.
- Before an Arabic digit, use a hyphen: ke-21; never write ke21, ke 21, or 21st in Malay.
- Keep directional ke separate: ke rumah.
- Spelling and syntax together distinguish ordinal buku ketiga from collective ketiga-tiga buku.
