The construction conventionally written ber-...-an in grammatical analysis places material on both sides of a base. The default template is ber- + ROOT + -an, but the actual Malaysian Malay word is written solid: ber- + salam + -an → bersalaman. Unlike a simple -an noun, the result is normally verbal or predicative and often presents reciprocal, distributed, or repeated events.
This page is about the form of the construction. The meaning page maps its event readings, and the usage page handles valency, lexicalization, and register. The three questions must be kept separate: a correctly assembled string is not automatically an established word, and -an does not automatically make the result a noun.
The canonical two-part template
The four core formations all preserve the spelling of their bases. Hyphens and plus signs are analytical tools only; they disappear in ordinary writing.
| Base | Analytical segmentation | Written form | Broad event type |
|---|---|---|---|
| salam “greet; shake hands” | ber- + salam + -an | bersalaman | shake hands with one another |
| kejar “chase” | ber- + kejar + -an | berkejaran | chase one another; run about in pursuit |
| datang “come” | ber- + datang + -an | berdatangan | come in numbers or successively |
| jatuh “fall” | ber- + jatuh + -an | berjatuhan | fall in numbers or one after another |
| peluk “embrace” | ber- + peluk + -an | berpelukan | embrace one another |
| sentuh “touch” | ber- + sentuh + -an | bersentuhan | touch one another; be in contact |
Kedua-dua ketua delegasi bersalaman sebelum mesyuarat bermula.
The two delegation leaders shook hands before the meeting began.
Kanak-kanak itu berkejaran di halaman rumah.
The children chased one another around the yard.
Tetamu mula berdatangan selepas pukul tujuh.
Guests began arriving after seven o'clock.
Daun kering berjatuhan apabila angin bertiup kencang.
Dry leaves fell in numbers when the wind blew strongly.
Mereka berpelukan sebaik sahaja bertemu semula.
They embraced as soon as they met again.
Pastikan wayar yang terdedah tidak bersentuhan.
Make sure the exposed wires do not touch one another.
In every example, the root remains recoverable: salam, kejar, datang, jatuh, peluk, and sentuh. There is no nasal replacement comparable to the one found with meN-.
What “two-part” does and does not mean
Calling the construction a circumfix or two-part affix identifies a recurring pattern around a base. It does not mean that speakers first build an ordinary -an noun and then attach ber- in every case. Berdatangan is an event verb meaning that arrivals occur in a distributed way; it is not simply “to have a datangan.” Likewise, berkejaran does not name a noun merely because its last two letters are an.
Para penyokong berdatangan dari seluruh negeri.
Supporters arrived from all over the state.
Dua ekor anak kucing berkejaran di bawah meja.
Two kittens chased each other under the table.
The complete template and the event meaning support one another. Removing one side can yield another word, no word, or a different meaning. Datang is the simple verb “come”; berdatangan adds distributed plurality. Salam is a greeting or the base used in greeting expressions; bersalaman denotes mutual handshaking. Do not assume that a middle form such as datangan or salaman must function independently with the same meaning.
Restricted ber- surface behavior
The prefix at the left edge belongs to the broader ber- system. Its default written form is ber-, as all six core formations show. Elsewhere in the language, the prefix has restricted surface behavior: when ber- meets an r-initial base, the two adjacent instances of r fuse into one in the surface form. Thus ber- + rendam → berendam, not berrendam. Traditional Malaysian analysis still identifies the prefix as ber-; the fusion does not create a freely selectable prefix be-. The exceptional spelling bekerja and the fixed form belajar do not provide productive models for new words.
The important consequence for ber-...-an is conservative: preserve the base and follow the attested spelling. The right-hand -an does not trigger nasal deletion, consonant substitution, or a new special allomorph at the left edge. Do not erase a root-initial or root-final consonant to make the word look smoother.
One established r-initial example is rentet → berentetan “occur successively.” Its analysis is ber- + rentet + -an → berentetan, with the adjacent instances of r fused at the prefix-root boundary. It is not ber- + entet + -an, because entet is not the base.
Beberapa gangguan kecil berlaku secara berentetan sepanjang pagi.
Several minor disruptions occurred successively throughout the morning.
This alternation concerns the prefix edge only. It is not root deletion, and it should not be extended to unfamiliar words without dictionary evidence.
Which bases enter the template?
Many transparent members use verbal bases describing contact, directed motion, arrival, or change: salam, kejar, datang, jatuh, peluk, sentuh. Adjectival or stative bases occur in lexicalized relational predicates such as berjauhan, from jauh “far,” meaning “be far apart.” The range is broad enough to reveal a pattern but not broad enough to support automatic coinage.
Walaupun tinggal berjauhan, mereka tetap berhubung setiap minggu.
Although they live far apart, they still keep in touch every week.
English-speaking learners may be tempted to translate “each other” by surrounding any verb with ber-...-an. That fails because reciprocity in Malay can also be expressed by saling, by a reciprocal phrase such as satu sama lain, or by a lexical verb. For example, saling membantu “help one another” is conventional; an invented form built mechanically from bantu is not a safe substitute.
Jiran-jiran di sini saling membantu apabila berlaku kecemasan.
The neighbours here help one another when an emergency occurs.
Similarly, English plural subjects do not automatically require this construction. Tetamu datang can have a plural subject without berdatangan. The longer form contributes a distributed or successive construal, not basic subject agreement.
Recovering a base from a dictionary form
To analyse an unfamiliar candidate, identify both edges and test the middle against an attested base. Ber-peluk-an reveals peluk; ber-sentuh-an reveals sentuh. For a surface be- form such as berentetan, take care not to mistake the root-initial r for the end of the prefix.
A final an alone proves nothing. Berjalan “walk” ends in the letters an, but its base is jalan and its ordinary analysis is ber- + jalan, not ber- + jal + -an. Meaning and a real base must support both parts of the proposed segmentation.
Kami berjalan kaki dari stesen ke hotel.
We walked from the station to the hotel.
Here the entire sequence jalan is the base. Peeling off -an would invent jal and a nonexistent circumfix analysis.
Common Mistakes
1. Writing the analytical punctuation in running text.
❌ Mereka ber-salam-an di hadapan kamera.
Incorrect spelling — hyphens belong only in the analysis.
✅ Mereka bersalaman di hadapan kamera.
They shook hands in front of the camera.
2. Treating -an as an automatic noun-maker inside this construction.
❌ Berdatangan itu diletakkan di atas meja.
Incorrect category and meaning — berdatangan is a distributed-event verb, not a thing that can be put on a table.
✅ Tetamu berdatangan sejak awal pagi.
Guests have been arriving since early morning.
3. Inventing nasal deletion in the root.
❌ Para peserta berdatagan dari pelbagai daerah.
Incorrect — datang keeps its n in berdatangan.
✅ Para peserta berdatangan dari pelbagai daerah.
Participants arrived from various districts.
4. Misanalysing any ber- word ending in an.
❌ Berjalan terbentuk daripada kata dasar jal dengan apitan ber-...-an.
Incorrect analysis — the base is jalan, so no right-hand suffix is present.
✅ Berjalan terbentuk daripada kata dasar jalan dengan awalan ber-.
Berjalan is formed from the complete base jalan with the prefix ber-.
Key Takeaways
- The default template is ber- + ROOT + -an, written as one solid word.
- Core formations include bersalaman, berkejaran, berdatangan, berjatuhan, berpelukan, and bersentuhan.
- The construction is verbal or predicative; final -an does not automatically create a noun.
- Restricted ber- surface behavior can fuse adjacent instances of r at the prefix edge, while the lexical root remains intact.
- Confirm both a real base and an established Malaysian word before assigning the two-part analysis.
