Writing pun Separately and in Fixed Conjunctions

The default EYD V rule is simple: write the productive particle pun separately from the word before it. That gives saya pun, apa pun, and siapa pun. A small, conventionalized set of conjunctions is exceptional and written solid, including walaupun, meskipun, adapun, and bagaimanapun.

This is an orthographic split between productive syntax and a listed inventory of established words. It is not reliably audible, and meaning alone cannot always predict it. This page focuses on spelling; the functions of the particle pun are developed separately.

Productive pun is a separate word

Free pun adds focus or extends a statement: depending on context, it can convey “also,” “even,” “too,” or a sense such as “then.” Because it is a particle operating on the preceding expression, EYD V writes it separately.

Setelah semua tamu duduk, acara pun dimulai.

After all the guests had sat down, the event then began.

Saya pun tidak tahu mengapa rapatnya dibatalkan.

I don't know why the meeting was canceled either.

Satu orang pun tidak menjawab pertanyaan itu.

Not even one person answered that question.

The same productive spacing appears after verbs, nouns, pronouns, and longer phrases. Do not attach pun merely because it is short or unstressed. Unlike English, where -ever is visibly attached in whoever and whatever, Indonesian usually keeps pun separate.

💡
Start from separation. Unless the whole form appears in the fixed conjunction inventory below, write pun as its own word.

Indefinites: siapa pun and apa pun

With question words, separate pun helps create unrestricted meanings: siapa pun “anyone; whoever” and apa pun “anything; whatever.” The same productive pattern occurs in kapan pun “whenever” and di mana pun “wherever.”

Siapa pun boleh mengajukan pertanyaan setelah presentasi.

Anyone may ask a question after the presentation.

Apa pun keputusanmu, kami akan tetap mendukungmu.

Whatever your decision is, we'll continue to support you.

Kamu boleh menelepon saya kapan pun kamu perlu bantuan.

You can call me whenever you need help.

The forms siapapun and apapun are extremely common in unedited digital writing, but they do not follow the EYD V rule for productive pun. In formal, academic, journalistic, and other edited registers, use siapa pun and apa pun.

The fixed fused conjunctions

EYD V lists a limited group in which pun is historically or conventionally part of a conjunction. These forms are written as one word and should be learned as lexical items.

Walaupun hujan, pertandingan tetap dilanjutkan.

Although it was raining, the match continued.

Meskipun sibuk, dia selalu meluangkan waktu untuk keluarganya.

Although she's busy, she always makes time for her family.

Adapun jadwal lengkapnya akan diumumkan besok.

Bagaimanapun, kita harus menyelesaikan masalah ini bersama-sama.

In any case, we have to solve this problem together.

There is no productive rule allowing writers to invent new fused -pun words by analogy. The exception inventory is conventional. If a form is not on the list and pun is functioning as the free particle, separate it.

💡
The fused forms are not “more formal spellings” of free pun. They are established conjunctions. Dia pun datang and walaupun dia datang have different structures, so their spacing differs.

Productive versus fused: a contrast table

Productive form: separateListed form: fusedReason

apa punmeskipunindefinite phrase versus listed concessive conjunction
saya punadapunfocus particle versus listed topic connector
sekali punsekalipun“even once” versus “although/even if”
kapan punbagaimanapunproductive indefinite “whenever” versus listed connector “however/in any case”

The last two rows show why mechanical string matching is insufficient. Spacing can distinguish grammar and meaning.

Saya belum pernah sekali pun datang terlambat.

I have never arrived late even once.

Sekalipun hasilnya belum sempurna, proyek ini layak dilanjutkan.

Although the result isn't perfect yet, this project deserves to continue.

In sekali pun, sekali retains its independent sense “once,” and free pun adds “even.” In sekalipun, the solid conjunction introduces a concession. The pronunciation may be nearly identical; the written boundary guides the reader toward the intended analysis.

Why the exception inventory must be memorized

There is no visual property of walau, meski, or ada that lets a learner derive every boundary from first principles. The fused set reflects conventionalization: frequent combinations became established conjunctions and are now listed as whole spellings. Learn common items first—walaupun, meskipun, bagaimanapun, adapun, maupun—then recognize the more formal or literary members of the table.

Baik pelanggan baru maupun pelanggan lama harus memperbarui kata sandi.

Both new and existing customers must update their passwords.

Bagaimanapun juga, keselamatan penumpang harus diutamakan.

In any case, passenger safety must take priority.

This is one of the places where Indonesian orthography requires a finite memory list. Trying to replace the list with a broad “short particles attach” rule creates many errors, because ordinary pun remains separate in an unlimited number of productive phrases.

Common Mistakes

1. Attaching pun to an indefinite pronoun

❌ Siapapun boleh ikut rapat.

Incorrect — productive pun is separate in siapa pun.

✅ Siapa pun boleh ikut rapat.

Anyone may join the meeting.

2. Attaching every focus particle

❌ Setelah dipanggil, sayapun masuk ke ruangan.

Incorrect — focus pun after saya is a separate word.

✅ Setelah dipanggil, saya pun masuk ke ruangan.

After I was called, I went into the room.

3. Separating a listed conjunction

❌ Walau pun lelah, mereka terus bekerja.

Incorrect — walaupun is an established fused conjunction.

✅ Walaupun lelah, mereka terus bekerja.

Although they were tired, they kept working.

4. Confusing sekali pun with sekalipun

❌ Saya belum sekalipun menghubunginya.

Incorrect for the intended meaning “not even once” — write sekali pun separately.

✅ Saya belum sekali pun menghubunginya.

I haven't contacted her even once.

Key Takeaways

  • Productive focus pun is separate: saya pun, sekali pun.
  • Indefinites keep a space: siapa pun, apa pun, kapan pun.
  • Memorize the finite EYD V conjunction inventory, including walaupun, meskipun, adapun, and bagaimanapun.
  • Spacing can distinguish meanings, especially sekali pun versus sekalipun.
  • Ordinary Indonesian spelling has no mandatory accent marks; the crucial signal here is the word boundary.
