antara and di antara

Antara presents two or more points as participants in a relation: a distance, contrast, agreement, interval, or reciprocal connection. Di antara adds locative di, so it places or selects something within the space or set defined by those points. English between and among do not map neatly onto this contrast; the useful question is not “two or more?” but “am I structuring a relation, or locating something within it?”

The difference is especially visible in hubungan antara dua negara “a relationship between two countries” versus pulau di antara dua negara “an island between two countries.”

Bare antara structures endpoints

Use antara A dan B when A and B are the two endpoints of a distance, contrast, choice, or range. The coordinator dan explicitly pairs the endpoints.

The distance between Jakarta and Bandung is about 150 kilometers.

There is a major difference between the original plan and the final result.

I still can’t choose between the train and the bus.

The required sequence antara Jakarta dan Bandung occurs inside a larger noun phrase: jarak antara Jakarta dan Bandung. Bare antara does not say that the distance is physically sitting somewhere. It identifies the two values whose relation is being measured.

The same structure works with times and numerical limits.

The courier will come between two and four o’clock.

The temperature in the highlands ranges between fifteen and twenty degrees.

Participants must be between eighteen and thirty years old.

In careful writing, antara A dan B is the clearest paired pattern. Antara A dengan B also occurs widely in contemporary Indonesian, especially when dengan feels relational, but learners can use dan consistently for named endpoints.

💡
Bare antara does not simply translate English “between.” It tells the reader to interpret the following items as the endpoints or participants of one relation.

Abstract relations and reciprocity

Relationships, negotiations, similarities, conflicts, and exchanges are inherently relational. Bare antara introduces their participants, whether there are two individuals or a larger set.

Hubungan antara kedua keluarga itu sudah membaik.

The relationship between the two families has improved.

Negotiations between the government and the labor union continued until midnight.

Cooperation among the school, parents, and local residents is very important.

This is a secret between us; don’t tell anyone.

Reciprocal meaning arises because the noun itself—hubungan, perundingan, kerja sama, kesepakatan—requires participants connected to one another. Antara makes that participant structure explicit; it does not independently mean “each other.”

In academic discussion (academic), letters such as X and Y can stand for variables:

Penelitian ini membahas hubungan antara X dan Y.

This study discusses the relationship between X and Y.

The required phrase hubungan antara X dan Y is thus the economical default for a neutral analytic relation. Hubungan di antara X dan Y also occurs, especially when the participants are viewed as members of a set, so it is not ungrammatical; di adds that within-the-set perspective and is unnecessary in the default pattern.

Di antara: location within a pair or set

Add di when the phrase answers “where?” Something is physically positioned within boundaries or among the members of a group.

My bag is wedged between the wardrobe and the wall.

The new teacher stood among the students while explaining the game.

There is a small garden between those two buildings.

The required di antara siswa locates the teacher within a group of students. Notice that di antara can occur with two anchors (lemari dan dinding) or with a set (siswa). Indonesian is not recreating the English school rule that between is only for two and among for more than two.

The same locative structure extends metaphorically to ranking and circumstances.

This product is among the best-selling of the five models launched this year.

His/Her name appeared among the hundreds of applicants who passed the initial screening.

Here the “space” is conceptual rather than geometric, but the subject is still being placed within a field of alternatives or pressures.

Selecting a member from a set

Di antara + set also supplies the larger group from which one or more members are identified. English often uses among, of, or out of for this single Indonesian pattern.

Who among you brought the spare key?

Three of the ten applicants were called for a second interview.

One of them lives in Makassar.

In many partitive expressions, plain dari is also possible: tiga dari sepuluh pelamar. Di antara more strongly invites the reader to scan a set and locate the selected member within it. See partitive noun phrases for the larger system.

💡
With a plural group, ask whether the phrase merely names participants in a relation or supplies a set containing the subject. Compare kerja sama antara siswa “cooperation among students” with siapa di antara siswa itu? “who among those students?”

Di tengah: center or surrounding situation

Di tengah literally means “in the middle” and profiles a center, surrounding scene, or ongoing situation. Di antara instead profiles boundaries or members. The two overlap in some physical scenes, but their focus differs.

Rumah itu berdiri di tengah sawah.

The house stands in the middle of rice fields.

Dia menerima telepon penting di tengah rapat.

He/She received an important call in the middle of the meeting.

The child stood in the middle of the crowd, not between the two officers.

Di tengah rapat locates an interruption within the unfolding event. Di antara dua petugas locates the child relative to two anchors. With a crowd, di tengah kerumunan emphasizes being surrounded or centrally immersed; di antara para penonton simply places someone among the spectators.

Amid economic uncertainty, the company continued hiring new employees.

This figurative di tengah is common in news and formal exposition (formal) because it frames an event against a surrounding situation.

Word boundaries

Write antara as one word and free locative di separately: di antara, never diantara. The complement also remains separate: di antara siswa, antara Jakarta dan Bandung. This is the same EYD V boundary that distinguishes di rumah from passive ditutup and ke kantor from ordinal kedua.

The door between the two rooms has already been closed.

The first di is free and marks the door’s location; ditutup contains an attached passive prefix. Review the full contrast on the di/ke spacing page.

Common Mistakes

1. Omitting dan between paired participants

❌ Laporan itu menjelaskan hubungan antara harga permintaan.

Incorrect for the intended relation between price and demand — without dan, harga permintaan can be read as one noun phrase.

The report explains the relationship between price and demand.

2. Omitting di from a physical location

❌ Rina duduk antara para tamu.

Incorrect for the intended location ‘among the guests’ — add locative di.

✅ Rina duduk di antara para tamu.

Rina sat among the guests.

3. Pairing endpoints with sampai after antara

❌ Usia peserta berkisar antara delapan belas sampai tiga puluh tahun.

Nonstandard paired structure in careful writing — after antara, coordinate the two endpoints with dan.

The participants’ ages range between eighteen and thirty.

For a source-to-endpoint range, use a different structure: dari delapan belas sampai tiga puluh tahun.

4. Writing di antara as one word

❌ Ada lorong sempit diantara dua bangunan.

Incorrect EYD spelling — locative di is a separate preposition.

✅ Ada lorong sempit di antara dua bangunan.

There is a narrow alley between two buildings.

5. Using di antara for “in the middle of” an event

❌ Dia keluar sebentar di antara rapat.

Incorrect for the intended meaning ‘in the middle of the meeting’ — di antara does not present one event as an unfolding interval.

✅ Dia keluar sebentar di tengah rapat.

He/She stepped out briefly in the middle of the meeting.

Key Takeaways

  • Bare antara structures endpoints or participants: antara A dan B, hubungan antara negara.
  • Di antara locates or selects something within a pair or set: di antara siswa, salah satu di antara mereka.
  • The contrast is relational versus locative, not simply English between versus among.
  • Di tengah emphasizes a center, surrounding scene, or unfolding situation.
