Nih presents something as immediately at hand: an object the speaker is offering, information just produced, a situation currently affecting the speaker, or a point the hearer should attend to now. Its historical and colloquial connection with ini “this” helps explain the proximal feel, but nih is not merely a shortened demonstrative.
It is a free particle of informal conversational Indonesian, strongly associated with Jakarta-style urban speech and media but widely recognized beyond Jakarta. Active use varies by region and speaker. It does not belong in formal reports or standard noun phrases that simply require ini. The broader register system is introduced in Jakarta-style Indonesian.
The core meaning: “here, take notice of this”
The required example Nih bukunya can accompany handing over or pointing to a book:
Nih bukunya.
Here is the book. (informal; presenting it to the hearer)
Nih, kartu masukmu sudah aku cetak.
Here—I've printed your entry card. (informal)
Nih uang kembaliannya; coba dihitung dulu.
Here's your change; count it first. (informal)
Nih, aku bawakan payung karena di luar mulai hujan.
Here, I brought you an umbrella because it's starting to rain outside. (informal)
The speaker makes an item jointly available right now. English may use here, here you go, look, or no separate word. The stable contribution is presentation, not a fixed dictionary translation.
Presenting information, not only objects
The “item at hand” can be informational rather than physical.
Nih, nomor telepon teknisinya sudah kutemukan.
Here, I've found the technician's phone number. (informal)
Nih yang aku maksud sejak tadi: tanggalnya berbeda.
This is what I've meant all along: the date is different. (informal)
Nih buktinya, pesannya masuk pukul tujuh lewat lima.
Here's the proof—the message arrived at five past seven. (informal)
Nih, ada kabar baru dari kantor pusat.
Listen, there's new information from head office. (informal)
Kalau kamu masih ragu, nih aku tunjukkan rekamannya.
If you're still doubtful, here, I'll show you the recording. (informal)
In these uses nih does more than locate “this information.” It recruits the hearer to inspect, accept, or respond to material the speaker is now putting forward.
Clause-final nih: a current situation seeking uptake
At the end of a clause, nih presents the whole proposition as immediately relevant, often inviting sympathy, acknowledgment, or a response.
Aku sibuk nih.
I'm busy right now, you know. (informal; presenting the current situation)
Hujannya makin deras nih.
The rain is getting heavier now. (informal; shared noticing)
Baterai ponselku tinggal satu persen nih.
My phone battery is down to one percent. (informal; relevant problem)
Kayaknya kita salah jalan nih.
It looks like we've taken the wrong road. (informal; emerging realization)
Aku belum makan dari pagi nih.
I haven't eaten since this morning, you know. (informal; inviting uptake)
The particle does not grammatically mark present tense. The immediacy comes from presenting the state as part of the current interaction. A past discovery can also be newly presented now:
Ternyata dia sudah pindah sejak bulan lalu nih.
It turns out he or she moved last month. (informal; newly presented information)
Clause-final nih can prepare an explanation or request without stating it explicitly. “My battery is at one percent” may make a charger request relevant; context supplies the next move.
Initial nih: seizing attention
Initial nih can launch an offer, instruction, correction, or piece of evidence. When it forms its own spoken unit, write a comma after it.
Nih, dengar.
Listen to this. (informal; seizing attention)
Nih, perhatikan bagian yang aku lingkari.
Here, look at the part I circled. (informal)
Nih, jangan bilang aku tidak pernah membantu.
Look, don't say I never help. (informal; presenting counterevidence)
Nih, coba rasakan supnya sebelum ditambah garam.
Here, taste the soup before adding salt. (informal)
Nih, kubacakan pesan dari Rina supaya semuanya jelas.
Here, I'll read Rina's message aloud so everything is clear. (informal)
This position directs attention forward. Final nih more often presents the preceding proposition as the material needing uptake.
Nih and ini are not interchangeable
Ini is the standard proximal demonstrative. It identifies a noun referent or functions as a pronoun across registers.
Buku ini milik perpustakaan kota.
This book belongs to the city library. (neutral)
Ini salinan terakhir yang masih tersedia.
This is the last copy still available. (neutral)
Nih adds a conversational act of presentation:
Ini nih salinan yang kucari dari tadi.
Here it is—the copy I've been looking for. (informal; emphatic presentation)
Nih salinannya, simpan baik-baik.
Here's the copy; keep it safe. (informal)
The natural combination ini nih proves that the forms are not simple variants occupying one identical slot: ini identifies the item, while nih presents it emphatically.
In formal prose, keep standard ini and state attention explicitly.
Dokumen ini memuat hasil pemeriksaan tahap kedua.
This document contains the results of the second-stage examination. (formal)
Perhatikan bahwa dokumen ini belum ditandatangani.
Note that this document has not yet been signed. (formal)
Proximal nih versus distal tuh
Nih normally presents what is close to the speaker or interactionally “right here.” Informal tuh points outward toward something distal, visible, or already evidenced.
Nih, pegang tas yang sedang aku sodorkan.
Here, take the bag I'm holding out. (informal; proximal)
Tuh, tasmu masih tertinggal di kursi sana.
Look, your bag is still on that chair over there. (informal; distal)
The distance may be discourse-based rather than measured in meters. Nih brings a new point into the immediate exchange; tuh often directs the hearer to evidence “there” or to a consequence now visible.
Position, spelling, and social limits
Nih is a free particle and is written separately. It is unlike attached enclitics -lah and -kah. Informal surrounding forms such as aku, nggak, and kayaknya belong only in register-labeled colloquial examples.
Tunggu sebentar, aku cari alamatnya nih.
Wait a moment—I'm looking for the address now. (informal)
Ada kursi kosong nih di dekat jendela.
There's an empty seat here by the window. (informal; discovery/presentation)
With strangers or in hierarchical situations, nih can sound abruptly familiar when paired with an order. A neutral presentation is safer unless an informal footing has already been established.
Berikut salinan tanda terima untuk Ibu.
Here is a copy of the receipt for you, ma'am. (careful service language)
That formal-neutral rewrite conveys presentation without importing Jakarta-style intimacy.
Common Mistakes
Treating nih as an automatic replacement for ini
❌ Nih selalu dapat menggantikan ini dalam semua jenis tulisan.
Incorrect claim — nih and ini have different grammatical and discourse roles.
✅ Dalam laporan resmi, gunakan frasa dokumen ini, bukan dokumen nih.
In an official report, use the phrase dokumen ini, not dokumen nih.
Attaching the free particle
❌ Aku sibuknih hari ini.
Incorrect spacing — nih is written as a separate word.
✅ Aku sibuk nih hari ini karena ada dua laporan yang harus selesai.
I'm busy today because I have two reports to finish. (informal)
Missing the clause-final discourse function
❌ Dalam ‘Aku sibuk nih’, nih menunjuk sebuah benda bernama sibuk.
Incorrect analysis — clause-final nih presents the speaker's current situation; it does not point to an object.
✅ Dalam ‘Aku sibuk nih’, keadaan sibuk ditampilkan sebagai hal yang perlu ditanggapi.
In Aku sibuk nih, the busy state is presented as something calling for a response.
Treating nih and tuh as identical distance cues
❌ Nih dan tuh selalu menunjukkan orientasi deiktis yang sama.
Incorrect analysis — nih tends toward material presented here, while tuh directs attention outward.
✅ Tuh, lihat pesawat yang jauh di balik awan itu.
Look at the plane far away behind those clouds. (informal; distal pointing)
Omitting punctuation after initial interjectional nih
❌ Nih dengar baik-baik penjelasanku.
Incorrect careful punctuation — initial interjectional nih forms its own spoken unit.
✅ Nih, dengarkan penjelasanku sampai selesai.
Listen—hear my explanation through to the end. (informal)
