The classifier butir begins with a concrete image: one small, compact unit such as a grain, egg, pearl, or bullet. Contemporary Indonesian then extends that image into formal information structure. A question, agreement point, or numbered clause can be counted as a butir because it is treated as one discrete item in an ordered set.
This page covers that classifier use and leaves general numeral formation, plural reduplication, and the full lexical meanings of the counted nouns to adjacent pages. The standard order is explained in the classifier overview: write fused sebutir for “one,” but keep larger numerals separate in dua butir and tiga butir. Counted nouns take no plural ending.
The core pattern
Use numeral + butir + noun. The noun identifies what kind of compact unit or document item is being counted.
| Numeral | Classifier | Noun | Complete phrase |
|---|---|---|---|
| se- | butir | telur | sebutir telur |
| dua | butir | mutiara | dua butir mutiara |
| tiga | butir | peluru | tiga butir peluru |
| tiga | butir | pertanyaan | tiga butir pertanyaan |
Saya menambahkan sebutir telur ke dalam adonan.
I added one egg to the batter.
Kalung itu dihiasi tiga butir mutiara kecil.
The necklace is decorated with three small pearls.
Panitia menyiapkan tiga butir pertanyaan untuk setiap calon.
The committee prepared three question items for each candidate. (formal)
The numeral counts units, so neither classifier nor noun is pluralized: tiga butir pertanyaan, not a form with English -s and not neutral tiga butir pertanyaan-pertanyaan. As elsewhere in Indonesian, an overt classifier is often optional, but its presence makes the itemization perspective explicit.
English uses different strategies across these nouns: “one grain of rice” needs a separate unit noun, but “one egg” and “three questions” do not. Indonesian can use the single classifier butir across the concrete and informational domains because it contributes the shared idea of a discrete item.
Grains: the physical prototype
With rice and similar granular material, butir selects one grain from a mass. Bare beras can mean rice collectively; sebutir beras forces an individual-grain reading.
Butir beras itu menempel di sisi panci.
That grain of rice is stuck to the side of the pot.
Peneliti menimbang seratus butir beras dari setiap sampel.
The researcher weighed one hundred grains of rice from each sample. (academic)
Tidak ada sebutir beras pun yang tersisa di dalam karung.
Not a single grain of rice remained in the sack.
The required phrase butir beras can occur with a numeral, a demonstrative, or in a generic discussion of grain quality. The classifier contributes individuation, not just smallness: flour is fine and small, but it is not normally counted as butir tepung unless actual granules are under analysis.
Eggs, pearls, and other compact units
Eggs are larger than rice grains, yet Indonesian conventionally groups them with butir because each is a compact, rounded unit. Recipes, shopping lists, and inventories use butir telur naturally.
Resep ini membutuhkan empat butir telur, bukan tiga.
This recipe needs four eggs, not three.
Pedagang itu menjual telur dalam kemasan berisi sepuluh butir.
The vendor sells eggs in packs containing ten.
With pearls, beads, and similar items, butir again profiles each compact element. The noun may be omitted when the item is already clear, as sepuluh butir does after telur. The omitted noun is recovered from context; butir remains the counting unit.
Satu butir mutiara pada anting itu terlepas.
One pearl on that earring came loose.
Shape is a prototype, not a mechanical test. A marble can be counted with butir in some careful descriptions, but a ball, round table, or circular plate does not automatically take it. Established collocation and scale matter.
Bullets and ammunition
Butir is conventional for individual bullets or rounds of ammunition. It is common in formal police, military, legal, and news reporting.
Polisi menemukan dua butir peluru di dalam tas itu.
Police found two bullets inside the bag. (formal/news)
Petugas menyita tujuh butir amunisi dari kendaraan tersebut.
Officers seized seven rounds of ammunition from the vehicle. (formal/news)
Sebutir peluru ditemukan di dekat pintu belakang.
A bullet was found near the back door. (formal/news)
In everyday conversation, direct dua peluru is also understandable. Dua butir peluru sounds explicitly itemized, which suits an evidence inventory. Do not confuse butir peluru with a typographic bullet point; the shared English word “bullet” is accidental. Indonesian document butir has its own semantic extension from discrete units.
Questions as answerable items
In testing, surveys, interviews, and evaluation documents, butir packages each question or statement as one separately designed and assessed item.
Kuesioner itu terdiri atas dua puluh butir pertanyaan.
The questionnaire consists of twenty question items. (formal/academic)
Tiga butir pertanyaan terakhir belum dijawab.
The final three question items have not been answered.
Tim peneliti menghapus satu butir pertanyaan yang dianggap membingungkan.
The research team removed one question item that was considered confusing. (academic)
Direct tiga pertanyaan simply counts three questions and is natural in conversation. Tiga butir pertanyaan foregrounds their status as designed items within a questionnaire, test, or structured interview. The classifier adds institutional organization rather than changing the cardinal number.
Agreement points and numbered clauses
Formal prose extends butir to statements, principles, decisions, requirements, and subordinate numbered units. Each butir is one independently listable point.
Kesepakatan itu memuat lima butir utama.
The agreement contains five main points. (formal)
Butir ketiga menjelaskan kewajiban penyedia layanan.
The third item explains the service provider's obligations. (formal)
Ketentuan tersebut tercantum dalam butir 3 lampiran perjanjian.
That provision appears in item 3 of the agreement's appendix. (formal/legal)
This is the classifier’s distinguishing development: a concrete grain-like unit becomes a unit of document architecture. In a regulation or contract, butir does not describe the typography or physical shape of the words. It identifies one structurally subordinate, enumerable content item.
Butir-butir penting is possible when no exact numeral is present and the writer wishes to foreground several distinct points. That genuine reduplication requires a hyphen. After an exact numeral, use lima butir penting, not lima butir-butir penting.
Butir, biji, and buah
The three classifiers overlap around small objects but differ in register and conventional range:
| Classifier | Strong perspective | Typical examples |
|---|---|---|
| butir | compact unit; formal information item | beras, telur, mutiara, peluru, pertanyaan |
| biji | seed or generalized colloquial unit | pala; regionally mangga and everyday objects |
| buah | broad bounded inanimate item | rumah, koper, gagasan |
Sebiji beras may be heard in some varieties, but national formal writing strongly favors established sebutir beras when individual grains are meant. Conversely, a house is sebuah rumah, never sebutir rumah merely because it appears small from far away.
Spelling and optionality
Write sebutir as one word. Write dua butir, dua puluh butir, and beberapa butir with spaces. Classifier use does not add plural morphology: enam butir telur. The noun is not reduplicated after an exact numeral.
The classifier can be omitted where the noun is already clearly countable: empat telur, tiga pertanyaan, and dua peluru are grammatical. Overt butir contributes a conventional unit, careful count, or formal itemization. It is not agreement required by the noun.
Common Mistakes
❌ Saya menambahkan se butir telur ke dalam sup.
Incorrect spelling — sebutir is one fused word.
✅ Saya menambahkan sebutir telur ke dalam sup.
I added one egg to the soup.
❌ Survei itu berisi tiga butir-butir pertanyaan.
Incorrect neutral count — the exact numeral already counts the items.
✅ Survei itu berisi tiga butir pertanyaan.
The survey contains three question items.
❌ Polisi menyita lima butirs peluru.
Incorrect — Indonesian classifiers take no English plural ending.
✅ Polisi menyita lima butir peluru.
Police seized five bullets.
❌ Saya membeli sebutir pensil untuk ujian.
Incorrect conventional choice — a pencil is counted as a long rigid object, not a compact grain-like unit.
✅ Saya membeli sebatang pensil untuk ujian.
I bought a pencil for the exam.
❌ Butir hanya dapat digunakan untuk benda bulat kecil.
Incorrect — formal Indonesian also extends butir to questions and document points.
✅ Dokumen itu memuat enam butir rekomendasi.
The document contains six recommendation points.
Key Takeaways
- Butir counts grains, eggs, pearls, bullets, and other compact conventional units.
- Formal prose extends it to question items, agreement points, recommendations, and numbered clauses.
- Tiga butir pertanyaan profiles structured items; bare tiga pertanyaan is lighter.
- Do not choose butir from roundness alone or restrict it to bead-like objects.
- Write sebutir solid, larger numerals separately, and counted nouns without plural endings.
