Postnominal Adjectives and yang

Indonesian adjective modifiers normally follow the noun: mobil baru “a new car,” kamar bersih “a clean room,” and jalan sempit “a narrow road.” Adding yang gives mobil yang baru, which still describes a car but packages “new” more explicitly—often to select, contrast, or support a longer description.

The two patterns are therefore related but not identical. Direct noun–adjective order integrates a property compactly into the noun phrase. Yang + adjective makes the description a more independent identifying unit. This page develops that contrast while leaving adjective vocabulary and full derivational-affix paradigms to dedicated pages.

Direct order: noun plus adjective

The default compact pattern is:

noun + adjective

Rina baru membeli mobil baru untuk perjalanan ke luar kota.

Rina just bought a new car for trips out of town.

Kami membutuhkan ruang tenang untuk wawancara.

We need a quiet room for the interview.

Tolong kirim penjelasan singkat tentang kerusakannya.

Please send a brief explanation of the damage.

English normally puts adjectives before nouns; Indonesian starts with the kind of entity and follows it with the property. Thus mobil baru is ordinary Standard Indonesian, while baru mobil does not mean “new car.” In clause-initial position, baru may instead mean “only just,” so English order can create both structural and meaning errors.

💡
Say the noun first, then its simple property: mobil baru, kopi panas, kamar bersih. Do not use English adjective–noun order.

Mobil baru versus mobil yang baru

Both phrases can refer to a new car, but they organize information differently.

PatternTypical packagingNatural context
mobil barucompact category + propertyintroducing or describing a new car
mobil yang baruexplicit identifying descriptionselecting the new one, contrasting it with an old one

Mereka ingin membeli mobil baru tahun depan.

They want to buy a new car next year.

Kita pakai mobil yang baru; mobil yang lama sedang diperbaiki.

Let's use the new car; the old car is being repaired.

In the second example, yang baru and yang lama create a clear contrast between two identifiable cars. English may use adjective stress or the new one. Indonesian uses yang to give the property greater identifying independence.

Saya mencari apartemen yang murah, bukan yang dekat pusat kota.

I am looking for an apartment that is cheap, not one near the city center.

Here the speaker explicitly contrasts selection criteria. Direct apartemen murah would also be grammatical, but it would present “cheap apartment” more compactly and with less contrastive structure.

Use yang for complex adjective phrases

Yang is required in careful Standard Indonesian when an adjectival modifier is expanded into a phrase containing degree words, complements, or coordination.

Kami memilih kamar yang cukup besar untuk tiga orang.

We chose a room that is large enough for three people.

Dia mencari rekan kerja yang jujur dan dapat diandalkan.

He/She is looking for a colleague who is honest and dependable.

Rumah yang sangat mahal itu belum terjual.

That very expensive house has not been sold yet.

The adjective phrase after yang can expand naturally: cukup besar untuk tiga orang, jujur dan dapat diandalkan, sangat mahal. A bare string such as rumah sangat besar may occur in compressed language or be read as the clause “the house is very big”; for the attributive meaning “a very big house,” careful Standard Indonesian uses rumah yang sangat besar.

This does not mean every sequence of modifiers requires yang: compact lexical combinations and separate simple modifiers can still be layered. Once the adjectival modifier itself is expanded by degree, a complement, or coordination, however, yang marks it as one descriptive unit.

💡
Use yang when you want the listener to identify “the one that has this property,” especially under contrast or with a longer adjective phrase.

Stacking more than one property

Properties can be coordinated inside a yang phrase or layered through a simple modifier followed by a yang phrase:

Mereka tinggal di rumah yang besar dan nyaman.

They live in a large, comfortable house.

Saya perlu tas kecil yang kuat untuk membawa kamera.

I need a small, sturdy bag to carry the camera.

Kami melihat gedung tua yang megah di seberang alun-alun.

We saw a grand old building across from the town square.

Dan explicitly coordinates equal properties inside yang besar dan nyaman. The mixed patterns tas kecil yang kuat and gedung tua yang megah integrate one property directly, then add another as a salient requirement. Compressed direct stacks occur in suitable lexical contexts, but longer stacks can become hard to parse; coordination and yang make the relations clearer.

There is no single English-to-Indonesian reversal algorithm for many adjectives. Meanings form units: material nouns, colors, origin expressions, and property adjectives may have different internal relationships. Full ordering choices are treated on the adjective-order page.

Demonstratives close the noun phrase

Ini and itu normally come after the noun and its descriptive material.

PhraseMeaning
mobil baru ituthat new car
mobil yang baru ituthat car which is new / that new one
mobil baru yang mahal ituthat expensive new car

Mobil baru yang mahal itu ternyata milik tetangga saya.

That expensive new car turned out to belong to my neighbor.

Saya lebih suka model sederhana ini.

I prefer this simple model.

In the required phrase mobil baru yang mahal itu, baru is a direct modifier, yang mahal adds an identifying property, and itu closes the whole noun phrase. Placing itu immediately after mobil would change its scope and disrupt the intended structure.

Yang without a repeated noun

Once the category is known, yang + adjective can mean “the one(s) that is/are...”

Yang merah terlalu besar; saya pilih yang hitam.

The red one is too large; I'll choose the black one.

Ambil yang bersih dan taruh yang kotor di keranjang.

Take the clean ones and put the dirty ones in the basket.

The form does not mark singular or plural; context supplies “one” or “ones.” Full relative-clause analysis is left to the relative-clause overview, but this selection pattern is essential in everyday shopping and comparison.

Do not insert yang mechanically

Yang is not a required bridge between every noun and adjective. Direct mobil baru is complete. Mechanical yang can make a simple phrase unnecessarily contrastive or produce broken chains when a learner inserts it before every word.

Compare:

Saya membeli sepatu hitam baru untuk bekerja.

I bought new black shoes for work.

Saya membeli sepatu hitam yang baru, bukan yang sudah pudar.

I bought the new black shoes, not the ones that had faded.

The second sentence gives baru a contrastive role. The first simply builds a compact description.

Orthography

Write yang, adjectives, and demonstratives as separate words: mobil yang baru itu. Attach productive affixes in derived words according to EYD V. Hyphenate full reduplication, as in besar-besar. Normal Standard Indonesian examples use unaccented spelling.

Common Mistakes

1. Copying English adjective–noun order

❌ Kami menyewa murah apartemen dekat stasiun.

Incorrect Standard Indonesian modifier order.

✅ Kami menyewa apartemen murah di dekat stasiun.

We rented a cheap apartment near the station.

2. Inserting yang in every simple phrase

❌ Saya membeli yang mobil yang baru.

Incorrect mechanical use of yang before both the noun and adjective.

✅ Saya membeli mobil baru.

I bought a new car.

3. Putting a demonstrative before the description

❌ Saya ingin melihat mobil itu baru yang mahal.

Incorrect order for the intended phrase ‘that expensive new car.’

✅ Saya ingin melihat mobil baru yang mahal itu.

I want to see that expensive new car.

4. Chaining properties without a clear relation

❌ Kami mencari kamar tenang bersih nyaman murah.

Unclear unstructured stack of equal properties.

✅ Kami mencari kamar yang tenang, bersih, nyaman, dan murah.

We are looking for a room that is quiet, clean, comfortable, and inexpensive.

Key Takeaways

  • Direct modifiers follow nouns: mobil baru.
  • Mobil yang baru gives the property a more explicit selecting or contrastive role.
  • Use yang readily for complex descriptions, but not before every adjective mechanically.
  • Coordinate or structure long property stacks for clarity.
  • Put ini/itu after the completed description: mobil baru yang mahal itu.
