agak, lumayan, and Moderated Judgments

Degree expressions do more than measure a quality. They also reveal how a speaker feels about the judgment and how directly the speaker wants to deliver it. Agak commonly lowers the asserted degree or cushions criticism, while lumayan often presents something as better, greater, or more useful than expected. Neither has one fixed English translation.

This page focuses on moderated judgments in contemporary Standard Indonesian. It leaves lexical adjective inventories and full derivational affix paradigms to dedicated adjacent pages; see adjective degree for the wider system of degree modification.

agak: somewhat, rather, a little

Place agak before an adjective to present the quality as moderate rather than extreme: agak mahal “somewhat expensive,” agak sempit “rather cramped,” agak sulit “a little difficult.” It is standard in conversation and writing (neutral).

Harga kopi di tempat itu agak mahal, tetapi suasananya nyaman.

The coffee there is somewhat expensive, but the atmosphere is comfortable.

Saya datang agak terlambat karena keretanya berhenti lama.

I arrived a little late because the train stopped for a long time.

Bagian terakhir agak sulit dipahami tanpa diagram.

The final section is rather difficult to understand without a diagram.

With an undesirable property, agak often softens the criticism. Kamarnya sempit directly states that the room is cramped; Kamarnya agak sempit lowers the degree and makes the review less blunt. This social effect follows from the degree meaning: the speaker deliberately avoids claiming the full, unqualified property.

Maaf, penjelasannya masih agak membingungkan.

Sorry, the explanation is still a little confusing.

The sentence remains critical, but agak and maaf manage the listener’s face. Downtoning is not magic politeness, however. Agak bodoh is still insulting because the adjective itself attacks a person. Register and word choice matter as much as degree.

Agak is especially frequent with negative or inconvenient qualities. With a positive adjective, it may create restrained or context-dependent praise. Agak enak normally means only “somewhat tasty” and can sound underwhelming. A speaker who means “surprisingly quite tasty” is more likely to choose lumayan enak.

💡
With a negative quality, agak often means “the problem exists, but I am presenting it as limited.” With a positive quality, it can sound like faint praise rather than enthusiasm.

lumayan: better or more than expected

Lumayan is often translated as “not bad,” “pretty,” “quite,” “decent,” or “a fair amount.” Its characteristic contribution is not mediocrity. It commonly signals that the result reaches a useful or pleasantly surprising level relative to expectations.

Makanannya lumayan enak untuk warung dekat stasiun.

The food is pretty good for a stall near the station.

Saya tidur lumayan nyenyak meskipun hotelnya dekat jalan raya.

I slept quite soundly even though the hotel is near a main road.

Setelah membaca petunjuknya, tugas itu lumayan mudah.

After reading the instructions, the task was fairly easy.

In these examples, lumayan is positive: the meal, sleep, and task compare favorably with what the speaker anticipated. Translating every instance as “mediocre” would reverse the practical message.

Used alone (informal), Lumayan often answers a question such as Bagaimana makanannya? “How was the food?” It means “Not bad,” “Pretty good,” or “Decent,” depending on intonation. It is real approval, though usually less enthusiastic than enak sekali “very delicious.”

A: Bagaimana hasil wawancaranya? B: Lumayan. Saya bisa menjawab hampir semua pertanyaan.

A: How did the interview go? B: Pretty well. I could answer almost all the questions.

With a negatively evaluated or quantity adjective, lumayan can instead indicate a noteworthy degree: lumayan mahal “quite expensive,” lumayan jauh “a fair distance,” lumayan banyak “quite a lot.” The expectation component remains, but the resulting evaluation need not be pleasant.

Ongkos taksinya lumayan mahal karena kami terjebak macet.

The taxi fare was quite expensive because we got stuck in traffic.

Pesertanya lumayan banyak untuk acara yang baru diumumkan kemarin.

There were quite a lot of participants for an event announced only yesterday.

The polarity comes from the adjective and situation. Lumayan enak generally upgrades a positive assessment; lumayan mahal says the inconvenient degree is substantial. English “not bad” works for the first but not the second.

Parallel reviews: meal, hotel, and task

The same contrast appears across different kinds of reviews. In each set, agak cushions a drawback, while lumayan highlights an acceptable or unexpectedly positive result.

A meal

Makanannya agak asin, jadi saya tidak menambah kecap.

The food was a little salty, so I didn't add soy sauce.

Makanannya lumayan enak, terutama ikan bakarnya.

The food was pretty good, especially the grilled fish.

A hotel

Kamarnya agak sempit, tetapi bersih.

The room was a little cramped, but clean.

Untuk harga segitu, hotelnya lumayan nyaman.

For that price, the hotel was quite comfortable.

A task

Tugas pertamanya agak sulit karena contohnya terbatas.

The first task was rather difficult because the examples were limited.

Tugas keduanya lumayan mudah setelah kami memahami polanya.

The second task was fairly easy once we understood the pattern.

These are not merely weaker versions of sangat “very.” They frame the judgment. Agak distances the speaker from a harsh absolute assessment. Lumayan places the result favorably against a price, expectation, or initial difficulty.

Stance, politeness, and faint praise

Moderation can protect the listener’s face in requests and feedback. A manager might say Bagian ini agak panjang instead of Bagian ini panjang when suggesting an edit. The softened sentence is still actionable; it simply avoids presenting the criticism as categorical.

Bagian pembuka ini agak panjang; bisakah kita ringkas dua paragraf?

This opening section is a little long; could we shorten two paragraphs?

Lumayan can also create a social risk. Telling a close friend Masakanmu lumayan enak may be understood as “Your cooking is better than I expected,” which can imply that expectations were low. When unqualified praise is intended, enak sekali or sangat enak is warmer.

Masakanmu enak sekali; saya mau tambah.

Your cooking is delicious; I'd like another helping.

In formal reports, agak and cukup occur, but writers often state the relevant measure more precisely: relatif rendah “relatively low,” belum memadai “not yet adequate,” or an actual figure (formal). Lumayan is particularly common in conversation and reviews (informal), although it is not slang or nonstandard.

💡
Choose the degree word partly by social intention: agak often cushions a drawback; lumayan often recognizes an unexpectedly useful or positive degree. A literal English gloss cannot capture that stance by itself.

Compatibility with other degree expressions

The ordinary order is degree expression before adjective: agak dingin, lumayan ramai. Some combinations are natural because each word contributes a distinct layer. Agak terlalu mahal means “a little too expensive”: terlalu establishes an exceeded threshold, and agak reduces the extent of that excess. Agak kurang jelas means “somewhat insufficiently clear.”

Paket lengkapnya agak terlalu mahal untuk kebutuhan kami.

The complete package is a little too expensive for our needs.

Petunjuk pada layar agak kurang jelas dari jarak ini.

The instructions on the screen are somewhat unclear from this distance.

Other stacks are redundant or contradictory. Sangat agak sulit tries to combine “very” with “somewhat” at the same scope. Lumayan cukup bagus makes two adequacy judgments compete. Choose the one that matches the intended stance.

Negation changes scope too. Tidak terlalu ramai means “not too crowded,” often a positive judgment. Tidak lumayan is not the normal way to say “bad”; simply use tidak bagus, kurang bagus, or another precise evaluation.

Kafenya tidak terlalu ramai pada pagi hari, jadi kami bisa bekerja dengan tenang.

The café isn't too crowded in the morning, so we can work peacefully.

Common Mistakes

Translating lumayan as mediocre in every context

❌ Lumayan selalu berarti ‘biasa saja’ atau ‘pas-pasan’.

Incorrect — lumayan often presents a degree as useful, positive, or better than expected.

✅ Makanannya lumayan enak.

The food is pretty good / not bad.

Placing the moderator after the adjective

❌ Kamarnya sempit agak.

Incorrect — agak normally precedes the adjective.

✅ Kamarnya agak sempit.

The room is a little cramped.

Combining opposite degrees at one level

❌ Soalnya sangat agak sulit.

Incorrect — sangat and agak give incompatible instructions at the same scope.

✅ Soalnya agak sulit.

The questions are somewhat difficult.

Using lumayan as an automatic strong compliment

❌ Masakanmu lumayan enak sekali!

Awkward — lumayan moderates the evaluation while enak sekali strongly intensifies it.

✅ Masakanmu enak sekali!

Your cooking is delicious!
