Születik means “be born” and, by extension, “come into being.” It is an -ik verb with middle semantics: its subject undergoes or emerges from an event rather than acting on a direct object. English expresses birth with passive be born, but modern Hungarian születik is an ordinary lexical verb, not a productive passive construction.
This page supplies the verb's complete core paradigm and its characteristic time, place, possessor, and prefix frames. Unlabeled forms are neutral standard Hungarian. Its life-event counterpart meghal is another intransitive verb, but its stem behavior differs.
Principal parts
| Infinitive | Present 3sg | Past 3sg | Imperative–subjunctive 3sg | Conditional 3sg |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| születni | születik | született | szülessen | születne |
The imperative–subjunctive stem shows strong assimilation: underlying t + j surfaces as ss in szülessen. The past requires the linking vowel in third-person singular született, while most person-marked past forms have születt-.
A legkisebb unoka tavaly decemberben született.
The youngest grandchild was born last December.
Present and past: no definite object series
| Person | Present | Past |
|---|---|---|
| én | születek | születtem |
| te | születsz | születtél |
| ő / ön | születik | született |
| mi | születünk | születtünk |
| ti | születtek | születtetek |
| ők / önök | születnek | születtek |
Születik is intransitive, so it has no definite-object paradigm. Present second-person plural and past third-person plural are both születtek; time reference and the subject disambiguate them.
Minden nagy költözés után egy kicsit újjászületsz.
After every major move, you are reborn a little.
Az ikrek néhány perccel éjfél után születtek.
The twins were born a few minutes after midnight.
The table form születtek can therefore be present with ti or past with a third-person plural subject. Ordinary birth reports strongly favor the past reading; subject and time context resolve the formal overlap.
Conditional, imperative–subjunctive, and future
| Person | Conditional | Imperative–subjunctive |
|---|---|---|
| én | születnék | szülessek |
| te | születnél | szüless / szülessél |
| ő / ön | születne | szülessen |
| mi | születnénk | szülessünk |
| ti | születnétek | szülessetek |
| ők / önök | születnének | szülessenek |
Direct commands are uncommon because birth is not normally voluntary. These forms are nevertheless fully alive in wishes, hypothetical statements, and subordinate clauses.
Ha ez a kezdeményezés most születne, könnyebben találna támogatókat.
If this initiative were emerging now, it would find supporters more easily.
Minden szülő azt szeretné, hogy a gyermeke egészségesen szülessen meg.
Every parent wants their child to be born healthy.
Future time can use fog + születni, while megszületik with a future adverb often sounds more direct.
Az első gyermekük várhatóan június elején fog megszületni.
Their first child is expected to be born in early June.
Infinitive and major participles
The infinitive is születni. Its personal forms are születnem, születned, születnie, születnünk, születnetek, születniük.
A végleges tervnek péntekig kell megszületnie.
The final plan has to be completed by Friday.
| Form | Function | Register |
|---|---|---|
| születő | emerging or being born | neutral; often abstract |
| született | born; innate; native to a place | neutral |
| születendő | yet to be born | formal |
| születve | born with/for a disposition | mostly fixed or literary combinations |
A válság idején születő vállalkozások gyorsan alkalmazkodtak az új igényekhez.
The businesses emerging during the crisis adapted quickly to the new needs.
Született szegediként minden vendégnek tud ajánlani egy jó halászcsárdát.
As a native of Szeged, she can recommend a good fish restaurant to every visitor.
A születendő gyermek jogairól külön fejezet rendelkezik.
A separate chapter governs the rights of the unborn child. (formal/legal)
Time and place frames
Birth dates use the ordinary Hungarian time cases: years take -ban/-ben, named calendar dates take -n, and parts of the day have lexical locatives.
| Frame | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| year | 1998-ban született | was born in 1998 |
| date | május 4-én született | was born on May 4 |
| day / part of day | kedden / hajnalban született | was born on Tuesday / at dawn |
Place is a static location, not a source: Budapesten, Pécsen, Debrecenben, Magyarországon. City-name case selection is partly lexical and cannot be predicted from English in alone.
A bátyám 1987-ben született Pécsen, de Győrben nőtt fel.
My older brother was born in Pécs in 1987 but grew up in Győr.
A költő március 12-én, hajnalban született.
The poet was born at dawn on March 12.
Middle semantics and possessive birth announcements
Hungarian makes the newborn the subject: A gyermek megszületett. To name the parent, it often uses a possessive existential pattern: Évának fia született “Éva had a son.” The parent is dative, and the child remains the grammatical subject.
A szomszédainknak tegnap kislányuk született.
Our neighbors had a baby girl yesterday.
English also says “she gave birth,” but Hungarian then uses active szül: Az anya egészséges gyermeket szült. Do not add an agent phrase to születik as though it were an ordinary English passive.
The abstract extension keeps the same emergent structure: a plan, agreement, decision, work of art, or idea “is born.”
A hosszú egyeztetés végén kompromisszumos döntés született.
A compromise decision emerged at the end of the long consultation. (formal)
Prefixes and information structure
Megszületik presents the birth or creation as a bounded arrival into existence. Újjászületik means “be reborn,” and beleszületik valamibe means “be born into” a family, status, language, or circumstance.
A végleges megállapodás csak hónapokkal később született meg.
The final agreement was not reached until months later.
Nem született meg időben a határozat, ezért elhalasztották a beruházást.
The decision was not produced in time, so the investment was postponed. (formal)
Milyen történelmi helyzetbe született bele ez a nemzedék?
What historical situation was this generation born into?
Neutral affirmative order has megszületett. Negation and the focused interrogative separate the prefix: nem született meg, milyen helyzetbe született bele.
