Nyit means “open.” It is normally transitive: kinyit egy ablakot, kinyitja az ablakot. It also has an established intransitive use for a business or service beginning its opening hours: A pékség hatkor nyit “The bakery opens at six.” A door or flower becoming open, however, normally nyílik, while an already open state is nyitva van.
English uses open for all these structures, so selecting the Hungarian verb requires asking whether an agent performs an action, an establishment begins service, something becomes open, or a state holds. Object definiteness then selects the finite ending, independently of the prefix position.
The state construction belongs to the broader pattern explained in the adverbial-participle usage guide. Here the contrast matters because nyit, nyílik, and nyitva van are not interchangeable translations of English open.

Present indicative
| Person | Indefinite | Definite |
|---|---|---|
| én | nyitok | nyitom |
| te | nyitsz | nyitod |
| ő / Ön | nyit | nyitja |

With a transitive use, an indefinite object selects nyitok egy üzletet, while a definite object selects nyitom az üzletet. In commercial intransitive a bolt nyit, there is no object and therefore no definite paradigm choice.
Jövő tavasszal egy kis kerékpárboltot nyitnak a főtéren.
Next spring they are opening a small bicycle shop on the main square.
A gondnok minden reggel hétkor nyitja a főbejáratot.

Imperative–subjunctive: nyiss-
Short-vowel-plus-t forms the imperative stem nyiss-, not nyitj-. The short definite 2sg is nyisd; direct commands with ki- normally use nyiss ki / nyisd ki.

The organizers would like the mayor to open the exhibition.
Action, change, and state
Use transitive kinyit valamit when an agent causes a physical object to open. Use intransitive kinyílik/nyílik when the object itself undergoes the change. Use nyitva van for the resulting state. Adjectival nyitott can also mean physically open or, figuratively, open-minded/receptive.
A huzattól hirtelen kinyílt a hálószoba ajtaja.
The bedroom door suddenly opened because of the draft.
Az információs pult még nyitva van, ott kérhetünk térképet.
The information desk is still open; we can ask for a map there.
This is a genuine lexical division. Az ajtó nyit is not the ordinary way to say “the door opens,” though a bolt nyit is standard for opening hours.
Objects and common prefixes
Kinyit is the everyday bounded verb for opening doors, windows, boxes, and similar objects. Megnyit is common for events, institutions, accounts, files, and access; it often sounds more (formal) or technical. Felnyit emphasizes lifting something such as a lid or opening one’s eyes. Újranyit means reopen.
Az ügyintéző néhány perc alatt megnyitotta az új megtakarítási számlát.
The clerk opened the new savings account in a few minutes.
Óvatosan felnyitottam a doboz fedelét, nehogy elszakadjon.
I carefully lifted the lid of the box so that it would not tear.
Benyit valahová means open the door and enter/look in, and it selects a directional complement: benyit a szobába. Here the room is not an accusative object.
Kopogás nélkül benyitott az igazgató irodájába.
He opened the door and walked into the director’s office without knocking.
Neutral kinyitotta joins the prefix. Negation, focus, question words, and direct commands separate it: nem nyitotta ki, A GONDNOK nyitotta ki, ki nyitotta ki?, nyisd ki!
A takarító nem nyitotta ki a lezárt raktárt.
The cleaner did not open the locked storeroom.
A HÁTSÓ AJTÓT nyitották ki először, nem a főbejáratot.
They opened THE BACK DOOR first, not the main entrance.

- The imperative stem is nyiss-, with definite 2sg nyisd.
- Kinyit is common for physical objects, while megnyit serves events, files, accounts, and access.
