The core choice is conceptual, not lexical alone. Kávé may denote coffee as a substance, one conventional serving, or a type; üveg may denote glass material, a bottle used as a measure, or the physical bottle itself. Hungarian morphology tells the listener how the speaker has packaged the referent.
Use this page for the boundary cases. The forms page sets out the structures, and the usage page develops their everyday meanings. Unlabeled examples are neutral modern standard Hungarian.
Bare versus identified reference
Compare an unspecified amount with a known one:
Vizet kérek.
I'd like some water.
A vizet kérem, nem a gyümölcslevet.
I'll have the water, not the fruit juice.
Both objects are accusative vizet because víz shortens before this ending. The article a makes the second referent identifiable and triggers definite object conjugation kérem. Bare vizet combines naturally with indefinite kérek.
A bare singular count noun can also be activity-like and number-neutral:
Anna verset olvas, Péter pedig zenét hallgat.
Anna is reading poetry/a poem, while Péter is listening to music.
Adding egy verset commits to one poem; verseket explicitly commits to more than one. English articles often force a choice sooner than Hungarian does.
Amount versus count: the coffee scale
| Form | Likely interpretation | Number morphology |
|---|---|---|
| kávét kérek | some coffee / coffee as an order | bare singular accusative |
| egy kávét kérek | one serving | singular after egy |
| két kávét kérek | two servings | singular after két; accusative -t |
| a kávékat kérem | the established servings | plural -k plus accusative |
| etióp kávékat kóstolunk | varieties or samples | plural -k plus accusative |
Két kávét rendeltünk; amikor kihozták a kávékat, az egyik már hideg volt.
We ordered two coffees; when they brought the coffees, one was already cold.
This is not inconsistency. Két itself quantifies the first noun, so plural -k is absent. In the next clause, a kávék is an independently definite plural referring back to two established drinks.
Measured contents versus physical containers
Két üveg bort vettem.
I bought two bottles of wine.
Két üveget vettem.
I bought two bottles.
In két üveg bort, üveg measures the wine and remains uninflected; bor bears accusative. In két üveget, the bottles themselves are the direct objects, so üveg bears -et. Adding an adjective clarifies the object reading: két üres üveget “two empty bottles.”
The same contrast applies to három csésze teát “three cups of tea” versus három csészét “three cups,” and öt doboz festéket “five cans of paint” versus öt dobozt “five boxes/cans.”
Három csésze teát főztem, aztán elmostam három csészét.
I made three cups of tea and then washed three cups.
English marks the content relation with of. Hungarian relies on adjacency and places case on the final measured noun.
Numeral singular versus overt plural
Három csapat érkezett a döntőre.
Three teams arrived for the final.
A csapatok megérkeztek a döntőre.
The teams arrived for the final.
The quantified noun and verb are singular-form in három csapat érkezett. The definite unquantified plural a csapatok requires plural megérkeztek. Semantic plurality is present in both, but Hungarian morphology marks it in different places.
Quantity words behave similarly: sok ember vár, néhány vendég maradt, minden diák elment. By contrast, the independent pronoun-like quantifier mind refers back to an overt plural and takes plural agreement: A diákok mind elmentek “The students all left.” Do not confuse minden diák elment with a diákok mind elmentek.
Minden vendég kapott névtáblát, és a vendégek mind feltették.
Every guest received a name badge, and all the guests put theirs on.
Collective whole versus plural members
A bizottság elfogadta a javaslatot.
The committee accepted the proposal.
A bizottság tagjai aláírták a javaslatot.
The committee members signed the proposal.
Singular bizottság profiles the institution as one decision-maker. Plural tagjai profiles the individuals. British English notional agreement does not transfer: the committee have decided still corresponds normally to singular Hungarian a bizottság döntött.
Discourse can shift after a collective has been introduced:
A csapat megérkezett. A játékosok azonnal elfoglalták a helyüket.
The team arrived. The players immediately took their places.
Hungarian makes the shift explicit with plural játékosok. A later subjectless plural verb can also retrieve the members when context is unmistakable (informal), but formal prose should name the plural group when ambiguity is possible.
Mass versus type and portion readings
An overt plural divides a substance into recognizable units or kinds:
Sajtot vettünk a vacsorához.
We bought some cheese for dinner.
Érett francia sajtokat kóstoltunk.
We tasted mature French cheeses.
The first introduces an amount; the second compares varieties or individual cheeses. Gyümölcsöt vettem can be collective/mass-like “I bought fruit,” három gyümölcsöt vettem counts three pieces, and egzotikus gyümölcsöket kóstoltam foregrounds types or multiple fruits.
Sok gyümölcsöt vettünk, köztük három olyan gyümölcsöt, amelyet korábban még nem kóstoltunk.
We bought a lot of fruit, including three kinds/pieces that we had never tasted before.
The intended unit may remain ambiguous between pieces and types. Add darab for pieces or fajta for kinds when the distinction matters: három darab gyümölcs, háromféle gyümölcs.
Hungarian countability versus English countability
Információ and tanács can denote countable items in Hungarian:
Három hasznos információt és két jó tanácsot kaptam.
I received three useful pieces of information and two good pieces of advice.
English requires pieces of here; Hungarian does not. Yet the nouns remain morphologically singular after their numerals. Copying English uncountability produces wordy Hungarian, while copying English plural produces három információk, which is ungrammatical.
Other nouns favor explicit units. Bútor can have plural bútorok, but when counting separate pieces in a practical context, két bútordarab may be clearer than két bútor. Lexical preference and discourse purpose matter; “mass” and “count” are not immutable labels attached across languages.
Information structure changes the reading, not the number rule
KÉT kávét kérek, nem hármat.
I'd like TWO coffees, not three.
KÁVÉT kérek, nem teát.
I'd like COFFEE, not tea.
Focus on két corrects the number; focus on kávét corrects the category. The first still uses singular-form kávé after the numeral, and the second remains a bare accusative. Word order and stress add information structure without changing mass/count morphology.
Register-sensitive collective alternatives
Institutional writing favors compact collective nouns; conversation often names people directly.
A lakosság többsége támogatta az intézkedést.
The majority of the population supported the measure. (formal)
A legtöbben támogatták az ötletet.
Most people supported the idea. (informal)
The formal sentence has singular head többsége and singular támogatta. The conversational pronoun a legtöbben is morphologically plural and takes támogatták. These are grammatical contrasts, not merely longer and shorter translations.
Boundary cases and lexical exceptions
Fixed plural proper names such as az Egyesült Államok and az Alpok preserve plural form because the plural is part of the name. They do not license plural after ordinary numerals. Likewise, -ság/-ség can form a collective (lakosság, rendőrség) or an abstract noun (szabadság, szépség); the suffix alone does not decide agreement beyond the fact that the derived noun is singular.
Container ellipsis can also alter case placement. Once the content is contextually given, a café worker may say Két nagyot kérek “I need two large ones,” with the omitted serving understood. This does not mean an overt measured noun may randomly lose its case.
Decision tree
- Is the referent an unspecified amount or activity? Use a bare noun with required case: vizet kérek, könyvet olvasok.
- Is it a known amount or a generic topic? Consider a/az: a tej, a víz.
- Is an exact quantity stated? Put numeral/quantifier before a singular-form noun: két alma, sok információ.
- Is a standard unit, container, or portion relevant? Use két liter vizet, egy üveg bort, három szelet kenyeret; case normally appears on the measured noun.
- Is a service unit conventionally recoverable? A count shift such as két kávét is natural.
- Are varieties or established separate portions meant without an overt numeral? Use plural: különböző kávék, a kávékat.
- Does a singular noun denote a group? Use singular agreement: a csapat megérkezett.
- Do individual members matter? Name them with a plural: a csapat tagjai megérkeztek.
- Does English classify the noun differently? Follow Hungarian lexical behavior, not the English plural or piece of construction.
Diagnostic exercise
Choose the standard option and explain the reading.
- “two apples”: két alma or két almák?
- “I would like two liters of milk”: két liter tejet kérek or két litert tej kérek?
- “I bought two empty bottles”: két üres üveget vettem or két üres üveg bort vettem?
- “three coffees” as an order: három kávét or három kávékat?
- “the committee decided”: a bizottság döntött or a bizottság döntöttek?
- Why are both sajtot kóstoltunk and sajtokat kóstoltunk possible?
- Which profiles individuals: a személyzet or a személyzet tagjai?
- Why does a kávékat become natural after két kávét rendeltünk?
Answers: (1) két alma, because numerals select singular-form nouns. (2) két liter tejet kérek; the measured noun bears accusative. (3) két üres üveget vettem, because the containers themselves are objects. (4) három kávét; service context supplies portions, while -t marks object case. (5) a bizottság döntött, singular collective agreement. (6) Bare singular presents an amount/activity, whereas plural divides cheese into varieties or items. (7) a személyzet tagjai explicitly profiles individuals. (8) The two servings are now established, identifiable plural discourse referents.
Common Mistakes
1. Doubling number marking after a numeral.
❌ Három csapatok érkeztek.
Incorrect — the quantified noun and verb are singular-form.
✅ Három csapat érkezett.
Three teams arrived.
2. Marking the container instead of the measured contents.
❌ Két üveget bort rendeltünk.
Incorrect — with overt bor, the wine bears accusative.
✅ Két üveg bort rendeltünk.
We ordered two bottles of wine.
3. Adding unnecessary darab and then pluralizing the counted noun.
❌ Két darab információkat kaptunk.
Incorrect — információ can be counted directly, and even after két darab it would remain singular-form információt.
✅ Két információt kaptunk.
We received two pieces of information.
4. Using plural agreement because a collective has many members.
❌ A közönség hangosan tapsoltak.
Incorrect in neutral standard Hungarian — közönség is singular.
✅ A közönség hangosan tapsolt.
The audience applauded loudly.
Key Takeaways
- Articles and bare forms distinguish identified reference from unspecified amount or activity.
- Két kávét counts servings without plural -k; later a kávék can refer to those established drinks.
- Case placement distinguishes measured contents from containers: két üveg bort versus két üveget.
- Collective singulars contrast with plural member expressions in both meaning and agreement.
- Focus, register, and English countability affect interpretation, but they do not override Hungarian number and case structure.
