nincs, nincsen, sincs, and sincsen: Contrasts and Learner Traps

The central contrast is not English “isn't” versus “doesn't.” Hungarian first asks what kind of predicate is being negated. Present third-person existence, availability, location, and possession select nincs/nincsenek; noun and adjective predicates select nem; a constituent correction can retain affirmative van; other tenses and moods require nem, sem, or ne with an overt form. Additive sincs contributes “not either/not even,” so it also needs a discourse alternative. Review the core forms before using the boundary tests here.

Nincs versus nem with zero-copula predicates

Present third-person noun and adjective predicates contain no overt van and use ordinary nem. Locative and existential predicates would contain van/vannak affirmatively and use nincs/nincsenek negatively.

A szomszédunk nem tanár.

Our neighbor isn't a teacher.

A szomszédunk nincs otthon.

Our neighbor isn't at home.

A kávé nem hideg.

The coffee isn't cold.

A kávé nincs az asztalon.

The coffee isn't on the table.

These matched pairs keep the subject constant. Classification (tanár), quality (hideg), and location (otthon, az asztalon) require different negative architecture. Translating English isn't before identifying the Hungarian predicate type gives the wrong form.

Some adverbial and result-state expressions select nincs: nincs jól “isn't well,” nincs nyitva “isn't open,” nincs készen “isn't ready.” Compare adjectival nem beteg “isn't ill.” There is no single visual test for every borderline predicate; high-frequency state frames must be learned with their copular behavior.

💡
Use a positive Hungarian test: if neutral third-person Hungarian has overt van/vannak, its broad present negative normally has nincs/nincsenek. If the positive has a zero nominal/adjectival copula, use nem.

Broad negative location versus corrected location

Negative placement changes scope. Nincs denies the locative predication; nem + location ... van rejects one location while affirming another.

A könyvelő nincs az emeleten.

The accountant isn't upstairs.

A könyvelő nem az emeleten van, hanem a recepción.

The accountant isn't upstairs but at reception.

The first can be a complete answer to “Is the accountant upstairs?” and leaves the actual whereabouts open. The second makes the location the focused correction. The presence of van is not an exception to nincs; it is evidence that nem scopes over the focused phrase az emeleten, not over existence or location as a whole.

The same distinction works with the located entity:

Nincs csomag a portán.

There is no parcel at reception.

Nem csomag van a portán, hanem egy ajánlott levél.

It isn't a parcel that's at reception, but a registered letter.

The second affirms that something is there and corrects its identity. Hungarian negative placement therefore diagnoses focus as well as truth-functional scope.

Nincs versus nem plus an ordinary verb

Use nincs only when the predicate belongs to existential/copular van. An event verb takes nem, even if English paraphrases the result as unavailability.

Ma nincs ügyfélfogadás.

There are no public office hours today.

Ma nem fogadnak ügyfeleket.

They aren't receiving clients today.

The first makes ügyfélfogadás an unavailable service. The second negates the event verb fogadnak. Both can describe the same real-world schedule, but their information structure differs.

Similarly, Nincs válasz means “There is no answer,” while Nem válaszolnak means “They aren't answering.” Do not choose nincs just because English contains no.

Nincs versus sincs

Plain nincs introduces or reports an absence. Sincs makes its focused item additive or scalar.

Nincs nálam esernyő.

I don't have an umbrella with me.

Kabát nincs rajtam, és esernyő sincs nálam.

I'm not wearing a coat, and I don't have an umbrella either.

Egyetlen működő esernyőm sincs.

I don't have even one working umbrella.

The second and third need a set of alternatives: another missing item in the second, and the lowest possible quantity in the third. In a context-free announcement, isolated Esernyő sincs nálam invites the listener to recover an earlier or implicit negative alternative.

Short sincs and long sincsen do not mark different degrees of absence. Emphasis comes from prosody, particles such as még, and the selected focus—not automatically from adding -en.

Singular and plural: agreement, not number of possessors

The absent nominative theme controls nincs versus nincsenek. A plural possessor does not.

A diákoknak nincs közös öltözőjük.

The students don't have a shared changing room.

A diákoknak nincsenek zárható szekrényeik.

The students don't have lockable cupboards.

Singular öltözőjük selects nincs; plural szekrényeik selects nincsenek. Conversely, one possessor can have a plural theme: Nórának nincsenek testvérei “Nóra has no siblings.”

Numerals keep the counted noun singular: Nincs két egyforma kulcs “There aren't two identical keys.” This does not contradict semantic plurality; Hungarian agreement follows the morphosyntactic number of the numeral phrase.

Present forms versus past, future, and mood

The suppletive forms are present indicative only.

Most nincs közvetlen vonat.

There is no direct train now.

Tegnap nem volt közvetlen vonat.

There was no direct train yesterday.

Holnap sem lesz közvetlen vonat.

There won't be a direct train tomorrow either.

Ne legyen hangos zene éjfél után!

There mustn't be loud music after midnight!

Past volt, future lesz, and imperative–subjunctive legyen carry the grammatical distinctions that nincs cannot express. Additive meaning appears as separate sem in the future example. This is why nincs volt and sincs lesz are impossible combinations.

Negative existence versus negative concord

An n-word such as senki, semmi, or sehol still participates in Hungarian negative concord.

Senki nincs a váróteremben.

Nobody is in the waiting room.

Sehol sincs feltüntetve a nyitvatartás.

The opening hours aren't displayed anywhere.

In the first, nincs is the clause-level negative existential licensing senki. In the second, additive/concord sincs combines naturally with sehol. Multiple negative-looking forms express one semantic negation. Do not remove nincs/sincs to imitate standard English “nobody is.”

Nincs versus ne legyen

Nincs asserts a present absence. Ne legyen directs, wishes, or requires that something not be present.

Nincs cukor ebben a limonádéban.

There is no sugar in this lemonade.

Ne legyen cukor a limonádéban!

There must be no sugar in the lemonade!

The second does not describe the current drink; it imposes a desired state. English may use “no” in both, but Hungarian mood selects suppletive indicative nincs versus negative imperative–subjunctive ne legyen.

Register and stylistic alternatives

Nincs is standard across registers. Formal institutions may choose lexical phrases such as nem áll rendelkezésre “is not available” or nem rendelkezik valamivel “does not possess/have,” especially when stating a technical condition.

Az adatbázis jelenleg nem áll rendelkezésre.

The database is currently unavailable. (formal)

Jelenleg nincs hozzáférés az adatbázishoz.

There is currently no access to the database.

The lexical formal alternative does not make nincs informal; it merely foregrounds availability as a process or institutional status. Long nincsen likewise is not a dependable formality marker.

Decision tree

  1. Is the clause present indicative and third person? If not, use the appropriate nem/sem/ne + volt/lesz/legyen pattern.
  2. Would the affirmative Hungarian predicate use overt existential or locative van/vannak? Use nincs/nincsenek for broad negation.
  3. Is the predicate a present third-person noun or adjective with zero copula? Use nem: nem orvos, nem drága.
  4. Are you correcting one location or identity while affirming another? Use nem + focused constituent ... van, hanem....
  5. Does the absence add to an established negative set or mean ‘not even’? Use sincs/sincsenek; otherwise use nincs/nincsenek.
  6. Is the absent noun plural? Choose nincsenek/sincsenek; ignore the number of the possessor.

Diagnostic exercise

Choose the form and explain the contrast.

  1. “The archive isn't open.” — A levéltár nincs nyitva. The negative result state selects nincs.
  2. “The archive isn't modern.” — A levéltár nem modern. Adjectival classification has a zero copula and takes nem.
  3. “There was no lift last year.” — Tavaly nem volt lift. Past time requires nem volt, not nincs.
  4. “There isn't a printer either.” — Nyomtató sincs. The printer is added to a negative alternative set.
  5. “It's not in the drawer but on the shelf.” — Nem a fiókban van, hanem a polcon. Only the location is corrected, so focused nem coexists with affirmative van.

Common Mistakes

❌ A kiállítás nincs érdekes.

Incorrect—érdekes is an adjectival predicate and takes nem.

✅ A kiállítás nem érdekes.

The exhibition isn't interesting.

❌ A kabát nem van a fogason.

Incorrect for broad present location—use nincs.

✅ A kabát nincs a fogason.

The coat isn't on the coat rack.

❌ A kollégáim nincs az irodában.

Incorrect agreement—plural kollégáim requires nincsenek.

✅ A kollégáim nincsenek az irodában.

My colleagues aren't in the office.

❌ Tegnap sincs időnk rá.

Incorrect—past-time absence cannot use present sincs.

✅ Tegnap sem volt időnk rá.

We didn't have time for it yesterday either.

❌ Ne nincs senki a folyosón!

Incorrect—the required absent state uses ne legyen with negative concord.

✅ Ne legyen senki a folyosón!

There mustn't be anyone in the corridor!

Key Takeaways

  • Contrast zero-copula nem tanár/nem hideg with locative or existential nincs otthon/nincs az asztalon.
  • Use focused nem X ... van when correcting X, not when broadly denying location or existence.
  • Reserve sincs for additive or scalar absence; its long variant does not inherently add emphasis or formality.
  • Let the nominative theme control singular/plural, even in possession clauses.
  • Outside present indicative third person, replace nincs/sincs with tense- or mood-bearing nem/sem/ne + van forms.
