Hungarian nem denies an indicative proposition or a particular constituent. Ne belongs to directives and other imperative–subjunctive environments: it presents an action or state as something not to occur. Their position is meaningful because the preverbal field identifies the scope and focus of negation.
The forms page provides the core patterns. Here the choice is organized by what the speaker is doing: denying, correcting, prohibiting, or preventing.
Denying that an event or state is true
Use nem when rejecting an ordinary present, past, or future assertion.
Ma nem viszem magammal a laptopot.
I'm not taking my laptop with me today.
Tegnap nem értünk oda időben.
We didn't get there on time yesterday.
Jövő héten nem leszek Budapesten.
I won't be in Budapest next week.
Hungarian does not add a dummy equivalent of English do. The finite lexical verb carries tense, person, and object agreement. When the predicate has a separable prefix, neutral nem stands before the verb and the prefix follows, as in nem értünk oda. In nem viszem magammal, by contrast, magammal is an ordinary complement rather than a prefix.
Predicate adjectives and nouns likewise use nem:
Ez a megoldás nem olcsó, de hosszú távon megbízható.
This solution isn't cheap, but it is reliable in the long term.
The present third-person adjectival predicate has no overt copula, so nem directly precedes olcsó. This differs from locative van, whose neutral present negative is nincs.
Correcting one part of an otherwise valid message
Constituent negation rejects a person, object, time, place, or manner rather than denying the entire event. The corrected element often appears in a nem X, hanem Y frame.
Nem kedden találkozunk, hanem szerdán.
We're meeting not on Tuesday but on Wednesday.
Nem én kértem kávét, hanem Zsófi.
It wasn't me who ordered coffee; it was Zsófi.
The meeting and ordering remain affirmed. What changes is the focused value. English often relies on heavy stress while retaining ordinary order; Hungarian explicitly places nem + contrasted constituent before the verb.
Compare predicate negation:
Szerdán sem találkozunk, mert beteg vagyok.
We're not meeting on Wednesday either, because I'm ill.
Now the event is denied for Wednesday. Position and the choice sem diagnose scope.
Prohibiting an action
Use ne with the imperative–subjunctive form when telling someone not to act.
Ne tedd a tejet a felső polcra!
Don't put the milk on the top shelf!
Kérlek, ne szólj közbe, amíg befejezem.
Please don't interrupt until I finish.
The tone ranges from direct command to polite request; kérlek and intonation soften the second. Ne itself does not mean rude “don't.” Formal address uses third-person imperative–subjunctive forms:
Kérjük, ne lépjen a fűre.
Please do not step on the grass. (formal)
English don't does not reveal that Hungarian changes the verb from indicative lép to directive lépjen.
Preventing or avoiding an outcome
Embedded hogy ne clauses express a desired nonoccurrence after acts such as warning, arranging, or taking precautions.
Induljunk el korán, hogy ne késsük le a vonatot.
Let's leave early so that we don't miss the train.
Lehalkítottam a telefonomat, hogy ne zavarjam a többieket.
I turned down my phone so that I wouldn't disturb the others.
The negative event is not asserted as a fact. It is the outcome the subject wants to prevent, so Hungarian uses ne and imperative–subjunctive késsük/zavarjam. English uses present or conditional-looking forms, which can tempt learners toward nem; Hungarian tracks modality rather than English tense shape.
After volitional and directive predicates, the same principle applies:
Azt szeretném, hogy ne beszéljünk erről mások előtt.
I'd like us not to discuss this in front of other people.
Negative concord and “either”
Hungarian negative pronouns reinforce rather than replace clause negation.
Senki sem válaszolt az üzenetemre.
Nobody replied to my message.
Ne vigyél magaddal semmi fölöslegeset!
Don't take anything unnecessary with you!
English treats nobody plus not as a double negative in standard usage. Hungarian requires the negative partnership: indicative senki sem válaszolt and directive ne ... semmi. This is one semantic negation.
Se/sem can also add “either/not even”:
Ne felejtsd otthon a jegyedet, és az igazolványodat se!
Don't leave your ticket at home, or your ID either!
The second prohibition is elliptical: az igazolványodat se [felejtsd otthon]. Context recovers the directive predicate.
Knowing when nincs and sincs replace nem
Neutral present third-person absence and location use nincs/nincsenek:
Nincs cukor a kávéban.
There is no sugar in the coffee.
A gyerekek nincsenek az udvaron.
The children aren't in the yard.
For additive “not either,” Hungarian uses sincs/sincsenek:
Tej nincs itthon, és kávé sincs.
There is no milk at home, and there is no coffee either.
With other persons or tenses, regular nem returns: nem vagyok otthon, nem volt időnk. In a desired or prohibited state, use ne legyen: Ne legyen huzat! “There mustn't be a draft.” See nincs and sincs.
Prefixes reveal the negation structure
Neutral predicate negation separates prefixes:
Nem kapcsoltam ki a sütőt.
I didn't turn off the oven.
Ne kapcsold ki a folyosói lámpát!
Don't turn off the hall light!
If the speaker contrasts whole lexical choices, a prefix can stay attached in a marked correction: Nem kikapcsoltam, hanem lehalkítottam “I didn't switch it off; I turned it down.” Here the contrast is between kikapcsoltam and lehalkítottam. For plain “I didn't switch it off,” the separated nem kapcsoltam ki is the default.
A short dialogue
– Elküldted a fájlt? – Nem, még nem küldtem el. – Akkor ne felejtsd el ebéd után!
– Did you send the file? – No, I haven't sent it yet. – Then don't forget after lunch!
The first nem is an independent negative answer; the second negates an indicative event and separates el. The final ne introduces a directive and again leaves el after its verb.
Formal and informal use
Ne rakd ide a dobozokat, jó?
Don't put the boxes here, okay? (informal)
Kérjük, a kijáratot ne torlaszolják el.
Please do not obstruct the exit. (formal)
The formal example topicalizes a kijáratot and uses third-person plural polite directive torlaszolják. Both retain ne + verb + prefix. Register changes address and vocabulary, not the negative particle's core distribution.
Common Mistakes
❌ Nem nyisd ki ezt az ablakot!
Incorrect—an instruction not to act requires ne and imperative–subjunctive verb marking.
✅ Ne nyisd ki most ezt az ablakot!
Don't open this window now!
❌ Nem kikapcsoltam a sütőt.
Incorrect for neutral event negation; the prefix must follow the verb.
✅ Este nem kapcsoltam ki a sütőt.
I didn't turn off the oven in the evening.
❌ Senki válaszolt.
Incorrect—senki requires negative concord.
✅ Senki sem válaszolt.
Nobody answered.
❌ A kulcs nem van a táskámban.
Incorrect for neutral present location; use nincs.
✅ A kulcs nincs a táskámban.
The key isn't in my bag.
Key Takeaways
- Nem denies indicative facts or focused constituents; ne prevents directive or subjunctive outcomes.
- Neutral predicate negation separates a verbal prefix from its verb.
- Constituent placement reveals exactly what is corrected or denied.
- Negative indefinites participate in obligatory Hungarian negative concord.
- Use nincs/sincs for present third-person absence, but ne legyen for a state that must not arise.
