Hungarian correlatives let one part of a sentence point toward another: akkor... amikor aligns times, úgy... mintha aligns an appearance with an unreal comparison, and minél... annál aligns changing scales. Paired coordinators such as nemcsak... hanem... is similarly mark the two parts whose scope must match. The pair is not always fully pronounced, but its logic shapes meaning and information structure. The forms page maps the corresponding structures.
Locating an event with amikor
Use amikor when the subordinate clause identifies the time of an actual, expected, or narratively located event.
Amikor kinyitottam az ablakot, friss kenyér illata jött be az utcáról.
When I opened the window, the smell of fresh bread came in from the street.
The opening clause provides a narrative frame. Put the main event first when it deserves foregrounding and the time is added afterward:
Majd akkor beszéljük meg a részleteket, amikor mindenki ráér.
We'll discuss the details when everyone is available.
Here akkor is useful because majd akkor points to a future occasion and the amikor clause identifies it. Focused csak akkor... amikor makes that occasion exclusive: something happens only under that temporal condition.
In recurring contexts, amikor means “when,” while conditional ha may mean “if/whenever.” Amikor belépek az irodába treats entering as the occasion; Ha belépek az irodába frames it as a condition or repeated trigger. English “when” cannot decide this contrast alone.
Ordering events with miután
Miután establishes that its event precedes another one. It is valuable in narrative and instructions because Hungarian has no separate productive pluperfect paradigm.
Miután minden vendég elment, gyorsan rendet raktunk.
After all the guests had left, we quickly tidied up.
A szerző csak azután írta alá a megállapodást, miután kijavították az utolsó pontot.
The author signed the agreement only after they corrected the final clause.
The second sentence uses csak azután... miután to make the sequence a restriction: signing did not occur before correction. The simple past forms are enough because the conjunction pair orders them.
If events are merely successive rather than syntactically related, independent azután means “afterward”: Befejeztük a munkát. Azután hazamentünk. The conjunction miután explicitly embeds the earlier event.
Comparing degree or performance with mint
Comparative mint introduces the standard against which something is measured.
A javított változat sokkal világosabb, mint az eredeti.
The revised version is much clearer than the original.
A vonat hamarabb beért, mint ahogy az alkalmazás jelezte.
The train arrived earlier than the app indicated.
The second has expanded mint ahogy “than the way/as,” because an entire manner proposition follows. A bare noun phrase needs only mint. Hungarian may instead mark a nominal standard with -nál/-nél: világosabb az eredetinél. The two strategies overlap, but mint readily introduces a full clause.
Not every mint means comparative “than.” In Mint kutató, óvatosan fogalmaz “As a researcher, he/she formulates claims cautiously,” it assigns a role or viewpoint. Context determines whether two degrees are compared or a capacity is named.
Describing an appearance with mintha
Mintha compares reality with an appearance, impression, or counterfactual scenario. Conditional mood signals that the comparison is not asserted as fact.
A lakás olyan csendes, mintha senki sem lakna benne.
The apartment is so quiet; it's as if nobody lived there.
Úgy mosolygott, mintha már tudott volna a meglepetésről.
She smiled as if she'd already known about the surprise.
The first uses present conditional lakna. The second uses past conditional tudta volna. Main-clause olyan and úgy make the comparison dimension explicit, but mintha can stand without them when the relevant impression is clear: Mintha valaki kopogna “It sounds as if someone were knocking.”
This construction does not claim that the comparison is true. If evidence supports an ordinary manner statement, ahogy “the way that/as” may be more appropriate: Úgy csinálta, ahogy mutattad “He did it the way you showed him.”
Conceding a fact with bár and mégis
Concession acknowledges information that creates an expectation and then says reality goes against it.
Bár egész nap esett, mégis megtartották a szabadtéri koncertet.
Although it rained all day, they held the outdoor concert anyway.
Bár kevés tapasztalata van, nagyon meggyőzően vezeti a csapatot.
Although she has little experience, she leads the team very convincingly.
Mégis explicitly marks the counter-expectation and is useful when the turn is surprising. It can be omitted when bár and context already make the relation obvious. It can also connect independent discourse: Egész nap esett. Mégis elindultunk. “It rained all day. Nevertheless, we set off.”
Factual bár clauses use indicative. An independent wish such as Bárcsak kisütne a nap! “If only the sun came out!” belongs to a different optative construction and uses conditional mood. Similar spelling does not make it a factual concession.
Adding parallel information with nemcsak ... hanem ... is
This construction is persuasive because it first rejects a restricted description and then adds a second point. The compared material must have parallel scope.
A tanfolyam nemcsak hasznos, hanem kifejezetten élvezetes is volt.
The course was not only useful but genuinely enjoyable as well.
Nemcsak a tetőt javították meg, hanem az ablakokat is kicserélték.
They not only repaired the roof but also replaced the windows.
In the first, adjective predicates are paired, with is after élvezetes. In the second, two complete predicate–object units are coordinated. Additive is follows az ablakokat; it does not trigger the prefix inversion associated with identificational focus, so ki- remains attached in kicserélték.
If the first member is a subject but the second is an action, the sentence feels unbalanced. Rewrite so the corresponding items occupy the same level: subjects with subjects, objects with objects, or propositions with propositions.
The spelling distinction matters. In the fixed pair, write nemcsak together. Separate nem csak can occur when nem independently negates narrow-focus csak, but that advanced contrast is not a reason to split the ordinary conjunction.
Linking two scales with minél ... annál
Use this pair when change along one scale correlates with change along another.
Minél tovább áll a leves, annál jobban összeérnek az ízek.
The longer the soup stands, the more the flavors meld.
Minél kevesebb fölösleges lépés van a folyamatban, annál gyorsabban dolgozik a csapat.
The fewer unnecessary steps there are in the process, the faster the team works.
The direction can be more–more, less–more, more–less, or less–less. What matters is comparative marking in both halves: tovább... jobban, kevesebb... gyorsabban. The first minél clause normally frames the independent scale, while annál introduces the correlated result.
In advice, the pair can imply causation without strictly proving it: Minél többet gyakorolsz, annál magabiztosabb leszel “The more you practice, the more confident you'll become.” In academic prose, do not treat the grammar itself as evidence of a causal relationship.
Clause order and discourse goals
Subordinate-first order commonly supplies a frame before new information:
Bár hosszú volt az út, mindenki jókedvűen érkezett meg.
Although the journey was long, everyone arrived in good spirits.
Main-clause-first order foregrounds the outcome and appends its qualification:
Mindenki jókedvűen érkezett meg, bár hosszú volt az út.
Everyone arrived in good spirits, although the journey was long.
The factual relationship is similar, but the second can sound like an afterthought or concession added to an established claim. Hungarian clause order therefore manages discourse without changing the basic conjunction.
A short dialogue
– Mikor induljunk? – Akkor, amikor már kisebb a forgalom.
‘When should we leave?’ ‘When the traffic is lighter.’
– Nem lesz túl késő? – Minél később indulunk, annál később érünk oda, mégis érdemes várni fél órát.
‘Won't that be too late?’ ‘The later we leave, the later we arrive, but it is still worth waiting half an hour.’
The first answer uses explicit akkor... amikor because time itself is requested. The second uses minél... annál for a proportional relation and mégis to acknowledge that waiting remains sensible despite the predicted delay.
Informal and formal packaging
Conversation often relies on a short concessive link:
Bár fáradt vagyok, azért még elmosogatok.
Although I'm tired, I'll still do the dishes. (informal)
Formal prose may choose jóllehet and an explicit counter-expectation marker:
Jóllehet a vizsgálat mintája korlátozott, az eredmények mégis további kutatást indokolnak.
Although the study's sample is limited, the results nevertheless warrant further research. (formal)
Bár itself also works in formal writing; jóllehet simply creates a more elevated written register. Conversely, azért még in the conversational example is a colloquial way of signaling “even so.”
Common Mistakes
⚠️ Azután hívtam fel, amikor befejeztem a munkát.
Grammatical as ‘then, when...,’ but less natural than miután for the intended neutral after-sequence.
✅ Azután hívtam fel, miután befejeztem a munkát.
I called her after I finished work.
❌ Úgy beszél, mintha mindent tud.
Incorrect for unreal resemblance—mintha normally requires conditional mood.
✅ Úgy beszél, mintha mindent tudna.
He talks as if he knew everything.
❌ Nemcsak a szállást foglaltuk le, hanem vettünk vonatjegyet.
Incomplete paired addition—the second parallel member normally carries is.
✅ Nemcsak a szállást foglaltuk le, hanem vonatjegyet is vettünk.
We not only booked accommodation but also bought train tickets.
❌ Minél gyorsan beszél, annál nehéz érteni.
Incorrect—the proportional pair requires comparative forms in both halves.
✅ Minél gyorsabban beszél, annál nehezebb megérteni.
The faster he speaks, the harder he is to understand.
Key Takeaways
- Use amikor to locate an event and miután to mark an earlier event; add akkor/azután when the relation is restricted or highlighted.
- Distinguish real comparison with mint from unreal appearance with mintha plus conditional mood.
- Use bár to acknowledge an obstacle and optional mégis to foreground the counter-expectation.
- Keep both halves of nemcsak... hanem... is structurally parallel.
- Mark comparative change in both parts of minél... annál and let clause order support the discourse frame.
