The essive-modal -ul/-ül presents a language, quality, state, or role as the mode in which something happens. It is completely normal in magyarul “in Hungarian” and véletlenül “accidentally,” and it survives in established role expressions such as vendégül lát “host.” Its productivity is uneven: learners cannot attach it freely to every noun or adjective meaning “as” or “in a ... way.” This page explains the usable semantic network; the essive-modal contrast guide handles competing endings.
Languages as a medium
The most productive and predictable use forms language adverbs. They answer milyen nyelven? “in what language?” and modify acts of speaking, writing, reading, understanding, or communication.
A recepción magyarul és angolul is beszélnek.
At reception, they speak both Hungarian and English.
Tudsz németül levelet írni?
Can you write a letter in German?
A gyerekek már folyékonyan olvasnak franciául.
The children already read fluently in French.
A tájékoztató magyarul, románul és szlovákul is elérhető.
The information sheet is available in Hungarian, Romanian, and Slovak.
The form follows harmony and any stem-specific convention: magyarul, angolul, spanyolul, románul but németül, svédül, törökül. Vowel-final language adjectives give forms such as franciául and kínaiul. These are adverbs, not names of the languages as noun objects. Compare Magyarul olvasok “I read in Hungarian” with A magyar nyelvet tanulom “I am studying the Hungarian language.”
English marks the medium with in. Hungarian does not normally use an inessive country or adjective: magyarban beszél is impossible for “speak in Hungarian.” The established language adverb is the default. With tanul, magyarul tanulok also conventionally means “I am learning Hungarian”; the more explicitly institutional “I study in Hungarian” is magyar nyelven tanulok.
Manner adverbs in -ul/-ül
Many established adverbs describe the manner or circumstances of an event. Common examples include véletlenül “accidentally,” váratlanul “unexpectedly,” egyedül “alone,” rosszul “badly/incorrectly,” jól “well,” remekül “splendidly,” and kegyetlenül “cruelly/extremely.”
Véletlenül otthon hagytam a telefonomat.
I accidentally left my phone at home.
A vendégek váratlanul korán érkeztek.
The guests arrived unexpectedly early.
Nem szeretnék egyedül hazamenni.
I would not like to go home alone.
Rosszul írtam fel a címet.
I wrote the address down incorrectly.
A vizsga remekül sikerült.
The exam went splendidly.
These words behave adverbially: they do not agree with a subject or object, and they do not carry tense. Váratlanul megérkezett and váratlanul megérkeztek use the same adverb with singular and plural subjects.
The pattern is only partly productive. Adjectives in -tlan/-tlen, -atlan/-etlen frequently form -ul/-ül adverbs—váratlanul, feltétlenül, szüntelenül—but many ordinary adjectives choose -an/-en instead: gyorsan “quickly,” boldogan “happily,” csendesen “quietly.” Choosing the adverbial ending is lexical and morphological knowledge, not just harmony.
State and attendant condition
Some forms describe the state in which a participant carries out an action. Egyedül presents someone as alone; meztelenül means “naked”; öntudatlanul can mean “unconsciously.” The form is adverbial even when English uses an adjective.
A kisgyerek mezítláb és egyedül állt az ajtóban.
The small child stood barefoot and alone in the doorway.
A beteg mozdulatlanul feküdt az ágyban.
The patient lay motionless in bed.
Öntudatlanul is a korábbi tapasztalataira támaszkodott.
Even unconsciously, he/she relied on earlier experiences.
The second example describes a bodily state; the third describes manner without conscious awareness. Context can shift the balance between state and manner. Hungarian still uses one invariant adverbial form.
English predicate adjectives do not automatically map to -ul/-ül. “The child is happy” is A gyerek boldog, with a bare predicate adjective. “The child came home happily” is A gyerek boldogan jött haza, with -an, not essive-modal.
Established role and result-like expressions
A limited but important group of noun-based forms occurs in fixed or semi-fixed predicates. Learn the entire collocation rather than treating -ul/-ül as a freely productive role marker.
| Expression | Idiomatic meaning | Register |
|---|---|---|
| vendégül lát | host, receive as a guest | neutral |
| feleségül vesz | marry a woman, take as one's wife | neutral |
| segítségül hív | call on for help | neutral/formal |
| alapul szolgál | serve as a basis | formal/academic |
| örökül hagy | bequeath, leave as an inheritance | formal/literary |
| hírül ad | announce, make known | formal/literary |
| túszul ejt | take hostage | neutral news language |
A hétvégén vendégül látjuk a külföldi kollégáinkat.
We are hosting our foreign colleagues this weekend.
A nagyapám ezt az órát hagyta rám örökül.
My grandfather left me this watch as an inheritance.
A felmérés eredményei szolgáltak alapul az új terv kidolgozásához.
The survey results served as the basis for developing the new plan.
A támadók két alkalmazottat ejtettek túszul.
The attackers took two employees hostage.
These forms encode a role or resulting status inside a conventional predicate. For a freely chosen present capacity, Hungarian normally uses essive-formal -ként: tanárként dolgozik “works as a teacher.” Tanárul dolgozik is not a productive alternative.
Lexicalized discourse and spatial forms
Several extremely common words contain historical or lexicalized -ul/-ül but are best learned whole: például “for example,” végül “finally,” belül “inside/within,” kívül “outside/besides.” Their present syntax is not predictable simply by removing the last syllable.
Végül sikerült közös megoldást találnunk.
In the end, we managed to find a shared solution.
Több városban, például Pécsen és Szegeden is jártunk.
We visited several cities, including Pécs and Szeged.
A csomag három munkanapon belül megérkezik.
The parcel will arrive within three working days.
Belül and kívül often participate in postpositional constructions with a case-marked complement: három napon belül, a városon kívül. Treating them as ordinary newly derived adverbs would miss their government.
A short dialogue
This exchange is natural (informal) Hungarian at a multilingual event.
– Milyen nyelven kezdjük? – Beszéljünk magyarul, de szükség esetén angolul is összefoglalom.
– Which language shall we start in? – Let's speak Hungarian, but if necessary I will summarize in English too.
– Egyedül vezeted a programot? – Nem, Évát is segítségül hívom.
– Are you running the program alone? – No, I will ask Éva to help as well.
– Remekül hangzik. A résztvevőket utána vacsorára is vendégül látjuk?
– That sounds great. Are we hosting the participants for dinner afterward too?
The suffix marks language, manner/state, and a fixed role expression within one coherent exchange.
Formal and informal choices
Language adverbs and common manner adverbs are register-neutral. Role collocations vary. Ajándékba ad is the ordinary (informal/neutral) way to say “give as a gift,” while ajándékul ad is elevated (formal/literary). Hírül ad is common in news and elevated narration, whereas conversation prefers elmond or bejelent.
Ezt a könyvet ajándékba adom neked.
I am giving you this book as a present. (neutral)
A gyűrűt szeretete jeléül adta ajándékul.
He/she gave the ring as a token of love. (literary)

Key Takeaways
- Language adverbs in -ul/-ül are productive and central: magyarul, németül, franciául.
- Many manner and state adverbs use the ending, but the choice against -an/-en is partly lexical.
- Role readings survive chiefly in established collocations such as vendégül lát and alapul szolgál.
- Use productive -ként for an ordinary capacity such as tanárként dolgozik.
- Lexicalized forms such as például, végül, belül, kívül must be learned with their current syntax.
- English “in,” “as,” and adverbial -ly do not map one-for-one to -ul/-ül.
