Adjective-Forming and Privative Suffixes: Contrasts and Learner Traps

Hungarian adjective suffixes do not merely turn any noun or verb into a generic modifier. -s tends to characterize by presence or association, -i by relation or origin, -tlan/-tlen by absence, -ható/-hető by possibility, -nyi by measure, -féle by kind, and -szerű by resemblance. Choosing the wrong one often produces a possible-looking word with a different meaning—or no established word at all.

This page concentrates on those boundaries. The productive patterns appear on the forms page, and their wider communicative uses on the usage page. Unless marked otherwise, examples are neutral modern standard Hungarian.

-s versus -i: characteristic or relation?

An -s derivative often says that something has, contains, displays, or is characterized by the base: sós “salty,” tejes “containing milk,” bajuszos “mustached.” The surface suffix includes harmonic linking vowels -os/-es/-ös and, in some stem classes, -as. An -i derivative more often means “connected with, originating in, or typical of a place/time/institution”: városi, nyári, egyetemi, budapesti.

Tejes kávét kértem, nem feketekávét.

I ordered coffee with milk, not black coffee.

Az egyetemi kávézó este nyolcig van nyitva.

The university café is open until eight in the evening.

Tejes describes what the coffee contains. Egyetemi establishes its institutional relation. English -y, “with,” and noun–noun compounds divide this territory differently, so no single translation predicts the Hungarian suffix.

Some bases permit both suffixes with a lexical meaning contrast:

Baráti hangon beszélt velem, de a recepciós nem volt különösebben barátságos.

He spoke to me in a friendly, collegial tone, but the receptionist wasn't especially friendly.

Baráti means “of/between friends; amicable,” whereas barátságos describes a person, place, or manner as welcoming. Similarly, otthoni munka is work done at home, but otthonos szoba is a cozy or familiar-feeling room.

Az otthoni iroda kicsi, mégis otthonos.

The home office is small, yet cozy.

💡
Ask whether the base supplies a relation or a characteristic. “Connected with X” favors -i; “having/displaying X” often favors -s. Then check the actual lexical item, because established meaning outranks the shortcut.

Presence versus absence: -s and -tlan/-tlen

Privative -tlan/-tlen and its expanded surface variants -atlan/-etlen, -talan/-telen indicate absence: sótlan “unsalted/bland,” hibátlan “flawless,” értelmetlen “meaningless,” gondtalan “carefree.” Harmony chooses a back or front form, but the exact shape and stem behavior must often be learned with the word.

A leves túl sós, a köret viszont teljesen sótlan.

The soup is too salty, but the side dish is completely unsalted.

A jelentés nyelvtanilag hibátlan, de néhány mondata érthetetlen.

The report is grammatically flawless, but a few of its sentences are incomprehensible.

Negating an adjective with nem rejects the property in the current assertion; a privative derivative categorizes by lack. A válasz nem érthető means “The answer is not understandable” in this situation. Érthetetlen válasz presents “incomprehensible” as the answer's property and may sound stronger.

Not every English -less takes the privative suffix. Product labels favor compounds with -mentes: cukormentes ital “sugar-free drink,” gluténmentes kenyér “gluten-free bread.” Invented cukortalan is not the normal commercial term.

-ható/-hető versus participles and plain adjectives

Attach -ható/-hető to a verb stem to express that something can be done, is available for doing, or is suitable for the action: olvasható “readable/can be read,” ehető “edible,” mosható “washable,” érthető “understandable.”

The full article can be read for free on the website.

Ez a címke alig olvasható, mert elázott.

This label is barely legible because it got wet.

The same derivative supports availability in the first sentence and perceptual readability in the second. A past-participle-type adjective gives a different contrast: olvasott ember means a well-read person, not a readable person. Ehető is potential; megevett means eaten.

Productivity is high but semantics can block a form. Speakers accept a new -ható derivative when the underlying event naturally has an affected item or attainable result. A formally imaginable derivative may still be avoided if the verb's meaning gives no sensible potential property.

Measure with -nyi, type with -féle, resemblance with -szerű

These three suffixes answer different questions.

QuestionSuffixExampleMeaning
How much/how large?-nyiórányi késésabout/an hour's delay
Which kind/how many kinds?-féleháromféle sajtthree kinds of cheese
What does it resemble?-szerűálomszerű tájdreamlike landscape

Egy tenyérnyi folt maradt a falon.

A palm-sized mark remained on the wall.

Négyféle levest főztek a fesztiválra.

They cooked four kinds of soup for the festival.

A film eleje dokumentumszerű, a vége viszont álomszerű.

The beginning of the film is documentary-like, while the ending is dreamlike.

-Nyi measures by the base and often allows approximation; -féle classifies; -szerű asserts resemblance without identity. Thus gyermeknyi would mean “the size/amount of a child,” gyermekféle would classify a kind of child-like entity and is highly context-dependent, while gyermekszerű means resembling a child. The common lexical gyermeki means childlike/child-related, often with a positive or neutral association.

Near-synonyms develop evaluative differences

Derivation is especially lexical where several suffixes attach to related bases. Compare gyermeki “childlike, of a child,” gyerekes “childish/immature,” and gyermekszerű “child-like in form or behavior.”

Gyermeki kíváncsisággal kérdezett, de a sértődött válasza kissé gyerekes volt.

She asked with childlike curiosity, but her offended response was rather childish.

Replacing gyermeki with gyerekes would add criticism. Replacing it with gyermekszerű would foreground resemblance, sounding more analytical. These connotations cannot be derived from suffix meaning alone.

Another instructive pair is életszerű “lifelike/realistic” versus életképes “viable.” Both may translate loosely as “realistic” in planning contexts, but only életszerű történet says a story resembles real life; életképes terv says a plan can function or survive.

💡
A productive suffix guarantees a possible formation pattern, not an established interpretation. When two derived adjectives coexist, learn them through contrasting collocations: baráti beszélgetés, barátságos ember; gyermeki kíváncsiság, gyerekes viselkedés.

Derived adjectives still follow adjective agreement

All these derivatives remain unchanged before a noun but take plural marking when predicative or substantivized.

Olvasható útmutatókat keresek.

I'm looking for readable guides.

Ezek az útmutatók rövidek és jól olvashatók.

These guides are short and easy to read.

The attributive olvasható does not copy plural or accusative marking from útmutatókat. Predicative olvashatók agrees with plural útmutatók. See the adjective-agreement contrast page.

Gradable derivatives can also take comparative -bb: barátságosabb, életszerűbb, olvashatóbb. English “more realistic” becomes életszerűbb, not több életszerű. Non-gradable classifications such as háromféle and absolute privatives such as hibátlan resist literal comparison unless a speaker deliberately reinterprets them as degrees.

Information structure and register

Predicate position can focus a derived property:

A javaslat megvalósítható, csak túl drága.

The proposal is feasible; it's just too expensive.

Fronting the contrast sharpens it: Megvalósítható a javaslat, de nem ebben a formában emphasizes feasibility. This is neutral educated usage. Long -ható/-hető and -szerű formations are frequent in formal/academic prose because they compress clauses: statisztikailag értelmezhető adat, modellszerű leírás. In conversation, olyan, mint... may be more natural than an unfamiliar new -szerű coinage.

Decision tree

  1. Does the adjective mean “related to/from X”? Try established -i.
  2. Does it mean “having/containing/displaying X”? Consider the harmonic -s family.
  3. Does it mean “lacking X”? Check an established -tlan/-tlen form or a lexical -mentes compound.
  4. Does it mean “can be V-ed/suitable for V”? Use verbal -ható/-hető.
  5. Is X a measure? Use -nyi. Is it a type classifier? Use -féle. Is it only a resemblance? Use -szerű.
  6. Is a derived word established with a special connotation? Prefer that lexical meaning over mechanical suffix substitution.
  7. Is the adjective prenominal or predicative plural? Keep it invariant before the noun; add plural marking in predicate position.

Diagnostic exercise

  1. “home office” → otthoni iroda: relation/location, not coziness.
  2. “a cozy room” → otthonos szoba: characteristic, not merely located at home.
  3. “a washable cover” → mosható huzat: potential based on the verb mos.
  4. “three kinds of tea” → háromféle tea: classification, with singular tea after the numeral expression.
  5. “a palm-sized screen” → tenyérnyi képernyő: measure.
  6. “the instructions are readable” → Az útmutatók olvashatók: plural predicate agreement.

Common Mistakes

❌ Otthonos irodában dolgozom, nem a cégnél.

Incorrect if the intended meaning is a home office; otthonos means cozy or familiar-feeling.

✅ Otthoni irodában dolgozom, nem a cégnél.

I work in a home office rather than at the company office.

❌ Sótlen levest kérek.

Incorrect — the back-vowel noun só takes the -tlan form.

✅ Sótlan levest kérek.

I'd like unsalted soup.

❌ Olvashatók cikkeket küldtem.

Incorrect — an attributive adjective does not agree with a plural object noun.

✅ Olvasható cikkeket küldtem.

I sent readable articles.

❌ Ez a változat több életszerű.

Incorrect — Hungarian forms the comparative with -bb rather than copying English more.

✅ Ez a változat életszerűbb.

This version is more realistic.

Key Takeaways

  • -s characterizes by presence/association; -i usually marks relation, origin, time, or institutional connection.
  • -tlan/-tlen expresses absence, while many product-label meanings prefer lexical -mentes.
  • -ható/-hető derives potential adjectives from verbs; it is not the same as a past participle.
  • Keep measure -nyi, type -féle, and resemblance -szerű semantically distinct.
  • Derived adjectives remain invariant before nouns but take plural marking as predicates.
