Naming the Agent: על ידי, בידי, מ־

English lets by cover a striking range of relations: a novel by an author, a cut made by a knife, damage caused by an explosion, a response issued by a ministry. Hebrew does not hand all four jobs to one preposition. Before translating by, decide whether the following noun is an agent, instrument, cause or source.

That decision is also a register decision. A passive with an expressed agent is grammatically ordinary but stylistically concentrated in formal, journalistic, legal and academic prose. Conversation more often makes the agent the active subject.

The four-way distinction

RelationHebrew markerDiagnostic
agentעל ידי · בידיWho carried out or controlled the action? Agents are often, but not necessarily, intentional.
instrumentב־What tool or means was used?
causeמ־What event or force produced the result?
institutional sourceמצד · sometimes מ־Where did a response, signal or pressure originate?

Ask whether the noun denotes the participant that carried out or controlled the action. Volition is prototypical, not required: someone who causes an outcome accidentally can still be the passive agent rather than an instrument or impersonal force.

Here is the distinction in four complete sentences. English can translate every bold phrase with by or from; Hebrew makes the semantic roles visible.

הספר נכתב על ידי סופר צעיר שגר בחיפה.

haséfer nikhtáv al yedéi sofér tsa'ír shegár bekhéifa

The book was written by a young author who lives in Haifa. (formal/written — agent)

המעטפה נפתחה בסכין כי לא מצאנו מספריים.

hama'atáfa niftekhá besakín ki lo matsánu misparáyim

The envelope was opened with a knife because we couldn't find scissors. (neutral — instrument)

החלון נשבר מהפיצוץ, לא מירי.

hakhalón nishbár mehapitsúts, lo miyerí

The window was broken by the explosion, not by gunfire. (neutral — cause)

התקבלה תגובה מצד המשרד רק בשעות הערב.

hitkablá tguvá mitsád hamisrád rak bish'ót ha'érev

A response from the ministry was received only in the evening. (formal/journalistic — institutional source)

💡
Ask whether the noun could have intended the result. The author could intend to write; the knife and explosion could not. That separates an agent from an instrument or cause before any preposition is chosen.

על ידי: the modern default for an expressed agent

In a modern passive clause, על ידי + noun phrase is the clearest general marker of the doer. Its literal historical components are “on” and the construct plural “hands of,” but synchronically the whole expression functions as a compound preposition.

הבקשה אושרה על ידי הוועדה פה אחד.

habakashá ushrá al yedéi hava'adá pe ekhád

The application was approved unanimously by the committee. (formal/administrative)

הניסוי תוכנן על ידי צוות משותף משתי האוניברסיטאות.

hanisúy tukhnán al yedéi tsévet meshutáf mishtei ha'universita'ót

The experiment was designed by a joint team from the two universities. (academic/formal)

The Academy's article על ידי וחלופותיו describes the history carefully. Classical על ידי marked means, instrument or intermediary; Modern Hebrew extended it under European influence to the passive agent. The Academy says it has not issued a ruling on whether that modern use is “correct,” while source-oriented editors often prefer an active clause. That is a prescriptive history, not a reason to pretend the construction is absent: contemporary linguistic descriptions treat על ידי as the established agent marker. Yael Reshef's corpus-based history likewise identifies it as the selected modern marker, with בידי less frequent. For the larger voice choice, see choosing a passive strategy.

Write the expression as two words: על ידי. The standard abbreviation is ע״י, with Hebrew gershayim. It is suitable for notes, forms and compressed administrative prose; spelling it עלידי as one word is not standard orthography.

Inflecting על ידי

With a pronoun, the suffix attaches to יד, not to על. This produces forms that look identical to the literal expression “beside him/them”; context and the passive predicate disambiguate them.

by usעַל יָדֵינוּal yadénu

החוזה נוסח על ידו, אבל נבדק גם על ידי עורכת דין חיצונית.

hakhóze nusákh al yadó, avál nivdák gam al yedéi orékhet din khitsonít

The contract was drafted by him, but it was also reviewed by outside counsel. (formal/legal)

כל הנתונים נאספו על ידינו במהלך שנתיים.

kol hanetuním ne'esfú al yadénu bemahalákh shnatáyim

All the data were collected by us over two years. (academic/formal)

בידי: shorter, weightier, and visibly about hands

בידי is also a real passive-agent marker. It is written as one word and often gives a sentence a more elevated, historical or institutional cadence than על ידי. It is especially natural with conquest, custody, control and deliberate human workmanship—domains where “in the hands of” remains semantically close.

העיר נכבשה בידי הצבא לאחר מצור ממושך.

ha'ír nikhbeshá bidéi hatsavá le'akhár matsór memushákh

The city was conquered by the army after a prolonged siege. (formal/historical)

התוכנית גובשה בידי צוות מקומי תוך חודש.

hatokhnít gubshá bidéi tsévet mekomí tokh khódesh

The plan was formulated by a local team within a month. (formal/institutional)

There is real prescriptive disagreement here. The Academy reports that some editors recommend reserving בידי for literal or strongly hand-associated action. Actual formal Hebrew extends it to agents such as armies, committees and institutions. Label it formal/elevated, not archaic and not ungrammatical.

Instrument, cause and source are not agents

An instrument takes ב־. This is the same instrumental prefix used in כתב בעט “wrote with a pen” and נסע באוטובוס “went by bus,” developed on ב־ of price, instrument and means.

הוא נחתך בסכין בזמן ששטף כלים.

hu nekhtákh besakín bizmán sheshatáf kelím

He cut himself on a knife while washing dishes. (neutral — instrument, not agent)

A nonintentional cause normally takes מ־, often in exactly the middle or passive-looking clauses where English says by.

שלושה נוסעים נפגעו מהעשן ולא מהאש.

shloshá nos'ím nifge'ú mehe'ashán veló meha'ésh

Three passengers were harmed by the smoke, not by the fire. (neutral — cause)

מצד presents a response, signal, objection, pressure or initiative as coming “from the side of” an institution or participant. It marks the source or stance, not the syntactic agent of the passive verb.

לא נרשמה התנגדות מצד העובדים לשינוי.

lo nirshmá hitnagdút mitsád ha'ovdím lashinúy

No opposition to the change was recorded from the employees. (formal/journalistic — source or stance)

💡
English by is the trap, not the model. Translate the semantic role: על ידי / בידי for the doer, ב־ for the tool, מ־ for the cause, מצד for an institutional source or stance.

Why conversation usually turns the sentence around

A named agent is already important information. Once you decide to mention it, ordinary speech normally promotes it straight to the active subject. When nobody is named, conversation also has the subjectless third-person plural.

מחלקת התמיכה פתרה את הבעיה תוך עשר דקות.

makhléket hatmikhá patrá et habe'ayá tokh éser dakót

Support solved the problem within ten minutes. (neutral speech and writing)

הבעיה נפתרה על ידי מחלקת התמיכה תוך עשר דקות.

habe'ayá nifterá al yedéi makhléket hatmikhá tokh éser dakót

The problem was solved by Support within ten minutes. (formal/report-like)

The passive version is not wrong. It selects the problem as the discourse topic, then adds the department afterward. That packaging is useful in reports whose paragraphs track cases, applications, experiments or proposals rather than people. The agent phrase is therefore a register marker before it is a grammatical necessity.

Common Mistakes

1. Translating every English “by” with ב־. A person who writes a book is an agent, not a pen-like instrument.

❌ הספר נכתב בסופר צעיר

Incorrect — ב־ marks an instrument or means here. A human agent takes על ידי or בידי.

✅ הספר נכתב בידי סופר צעיר וזכה בפרס ראשון.

haséfer nikhtáv bidéi sofér tsa'ír vezakhá bifrás rishón

The book was written by a young author and won first prize. (formal/elevated)

2. Treating a cause as an agent. Economic reasons do not carry out or control an action.

❌ המשפחות הועברו משם על ידי סיבות כלכליות

Incorrect — סיבות כלכליות are a cause, not an agent capable of transferring the families. Use מסיבות כלכליות.

✅ המשפחות הועברו משם מסיבות כלכליות.

hamishpakhót hu'avrú mishám misibót kalkaliyót

The families were moved from there for economic reasons. (formal/report-like)

3. Writing the compound preposition as one word. Its modern agent meaning does not change its spelling.

❌ ההצעה הוגשה עלידי שרת התחבורה

Incorrect spelling — write על ידי as two words, or use the abbreviation ע״י in compressed administrative writing.

✅ ההצעה הוגשה על ידי שרת התחבורה הבוקר.

hahatsa'á hugshá al yedéi sarát hatakhburá habóker

The proposal was submitted by the transport minister this morning. (formal/journalistic)

4. Bolting a passive agent onto the subjectless active plural. The two voice strategies cannot occupy the same clause.

❌ הדוח כתבו על ידי הצוות החיצוני

Incorrect — כתבו is an active plural with an omitted agent, but על ידי הצוות החיצוני then tries to name a passive agent. Choose one voice.

✅ הדוח נכתב על ידי הצוות החיצוני ונשלח להנהלה.

hadúakh nikhtáv al yedéi hatsévet hakhitsoní venishlákh lahanhalá

The report was written by the external team and sent to management. (formal/written)

Key Takeaways

  • על ידי is the established general marker of an expressed passive agent in Modern Hebrew; write it as two words. ע״י is its administrative abbreviation.
  • Its suffixed forms are על ידי, על ידו, על ידם and so on: the suffix attaches to יד.
  • בידי also names an agent, with a more formal, elevated and often hand-associated tone; it is one word.
  • Instrument ב־, cause מ־ and institutional source מצד are not interchangeable agent markers.
  • Passive plus agent is at home in reports, legal prose and academic writing. Ordinary conversation usually chooses the active: מחלקת התמיכה פתרה את הבעיה.
