Coordination: ו־, או, אבל, אלא

Coordination makes two expressions act as one larger expression: דני ורונית is one plural subject, לשבת או ללכת fills one verbal slot, and two clauses can stand in contrast through אבל. The central principle is parallelism: the coordinator normally joins constituents doing the same syntactic job.

This page treats coordination as a structure. For the basic sentence-building routine, see coordination basics; each connector's meanings and pronunciation have their own pages in the Conjunctions group.

Match like with like

The coordinated units can be single nouns, larger noun phrases, adjectives, infinitives, finite predicates or whole clauses. They need not contain the same number of words, but they should occupy parallel slots.

Coordinated typeHebrewWhat the whole unit does
nounsלחם וגבינהone object phrase
adjectivesקטן אבל נוחone description
infinitivesלהישאר או לצאתtwo alternatives in one slot
clausesאני התקשרתי אבל היא לא ענתהtwo contrasted propositions

קניתי לחם וגבינה לארוחת הערב.

kaníti lékhem ugviná la'arukhát ha'érev

I bought bread and cheese for dinner.

הדירה קטנה אבל נוחה, והמחיר סביר.

hadirá ktaná avál nokhá, vehamekhír savír

The flat is small but comfortable, and the price is reasonable.

אפשר להישאר פה או לצאת למרפסת.

efshár lehisha'ér po o latsét lamirpéset

We can stay here or go out onto the balcony.

With coordinated subjects, the larger unit normally controls plural agreement. Mixed-gender human groups take masculine plural agreement in the standard; the details and the modern feminine-plural system belong on subject–verb agreement.

דנה ואורי הגיעו יחד ושמרו לנו מקום.

dána ve'úri higí'u yákhad veshamrú lánu makóm

Dana and Uri arrived together and saved us a place.

💡
Parallelism is a diagnostic, not a demand for visual symmetry. גבינה and לחם טרי can coordinate because both are noun phrases, even though one contains one word and the other two.

ו־ in lists: one attached final coordinator

Hebrew normally uses commas between the earlier items and attaches ו־ to the final one. English uses the same one-and pattern; the real difference is orthographic: Hebrew writes the coordinator solid onto its item.

צריך לקנות לחם, חלב, גבינה וביצים.

tsaríkh liknót lékhem, khaláv, gviná uveitsím

We need to buy bread, milk, cheese and eggs.

היא פתחה את המייל, קראה אותו וסגרה את המחשב.

hi patkhá et haméil, kar'á otó vesagrá et hamakhshev

She opened the email, read it and shut the computer.

Simple lists normally have no comma before the final ו־. Between longer coordinated clauses, a comma may help the reader where there is a clear turn or a change of subject; Hebrew punctuation is guided by structure and readability, not by a mechanical “comma before every and” rule.

Repeating ו־ before every item is also grammatical. It has a biblical or incantatory rhythm and remains available in (literary) prose, speeches and deliberate rhetoric.

הוא הבטיח עבודה וביטחון ושקט, אבל לא הציג תוכנית.

hu hivtíakh avodá uvitakhón veshéket, avál lo hitsíg tokhnít

He promised jobs and security and calm, but presented no plan. (rhetorical/literary accumulation)

That repetition is marked, not wrong. In an ordinary shopping list, one final ו־ is the unmarked choice.

או, או ש־ and clause-sized alternatives

Free-standing או joins alternatives: nouns, phrases and verbs. Before an explicit clause, Hebrew often uses או ש־, with ש־ attached to the clause's first word.

את רוצה קפה או תה?

at rotsá kafé o te?

Would you like coffee or tea? (to a woman)

או שתבוא עכשיו או שתתקשר כשתצא.

o shetavó akhsháv o shetitkashér kshetetsé

Either come now or call when you leave. (to a man)

In the second sentence, each alternative is a full finite clause. Repeating או ש־ makes the parallel structure audible. A shorter shared-subject sentence can instead coordinate bare predicates: תבוא או תתקשר.

אבל contrasts; אלא corrects

אבל places one fact against another. It does not require negation.

רציתי להצטרף אבל כבר קבעתי משהו אחר.

ratsíti lehitstaréf avál kvar kaváti máshehu akhér

I wanted to join, but I'd already arranged something else.

אלא replaces something explicitly rejected: not X but Y. What follows it is parallel to the rejected constituent.

לא רציתי לישון אלא לעבוד בשקט.

lo ratsíti lishón éla la'avód beshéket

I didn't want to sleep but rather to work quietly.

לא דני התקשר אלא אורי.

lo dáni hitkashér éla úri

It wasn't Dani who called but Uri.

אלא ש־ is a separate construction meaning “except that / only.” It follows a positive proposition and introduces a whole clause.

הייתי שמח לבוא, אלא שאני עובד עד מאוחר.

hayíti saméakh lavó, éla she'aní ovéd ad me'ukhár

I'd be glad to come, except that I'm working late. (m. speaker; formal-leaning)

The full semantic split, including אלא אם כן “unless,” is on אבל versus אלא.

Coordinating construct heads: common and disputed

In חיילי ומפקדי היחידה, both construct heads—חיילי and מפקדי—share the final dependent היחידה. Hebrew grammar calls this איחוי נסמכים. It is concise and common in modern institutional and administrative Hebrew.

חיילי ומפקדי היחידה התכנסו באולם המרכזי.

khayaléi umefakdéi hayekhidá hitkansú ba'ulám hamerkazí

The unit's soldiers and commanders assembled in the main hall.

מנהלי ועובדי המשרד קיבלו הודעה הבוקר.

menahaléi ve'ovdéi hamisrád kiblú hoda'á habóker

The office's managers and employees received a notice this morning.

Many traditional usage guides object because the shared dependent is overtly attached only to the second head and the pattern is rare in the earliest classical sources. The historical record is not a simple ban: examples occur in classical Hebrew, become commoner in medieval Hebrew, and the construction is productive in Modern Hebrew. The Academy has issued no general ruling that makes ordinary modern examples ungrammatical.

When a house style avoids the construction, there are two safe repairs:

חיילי היחידה ומפקדי היחידה התכנסו באולם המרכזי.

khayaléi hayekhidá umefakdéi hayekhidá hitkansú ba'ulám hamerkazí

The unit's soldiers and the unit's commanders assembled in the main hall. (dependent repeated)

החיילים והמפקדים של היחידה התכנסו באולם המרכזי.

hakhayalím vehamefakdím shel hayekhidá hitkansú ba'ulám hamerkazí

The soldiers and commanders of the unit assembled in the main hall. (של rewrite)

💡
Treat איחוי נסמכים as a style choice with a history, not as failed Hebrew. Use it when it is clear; expand it when an editor's style guide demands the conservative form or when several shared dependents would make the phrase hard to parse.

Correlative pairs must align

Paired connectives announce which units are parallel. Put each half immediately before the expression it coordinates.

גם אני וגם אחותי עובדים מהבית.

gam aní vegám akhotí ovdím mehabáyit

Both my sister and I work from home. (m. speaker; mixed subject)

היא לא רק תרגמה את החוזה אלא גם הסבירה לנו כל סעיף.

hi lo rak tirgemá et hakhozé éla gam hisbíra lánu kol se'íf

She not only translated the contract but also explained every clause to us.

Do not confuse a nominal “between” phrase with a clause-sized “whether” frame:

יש הבדל גדול בין המחיר באתר לבין המחיר בחנות.

yesh hevdél gadól bein hamekhír ba'atár levéin hamekhír bakhanút

There's a big difference between the price online and the price in the shop.

בין אם תסכימו ובין אם לא, ההחלטה תירשם בפרוטוקול.

bein im taskímu uvéin im lo, hahakhlatá teirashém baprotokól

Whether you agree or not, the decision will be entered in the minutes. (formal)

Bare בין X ובין Y can also coordinate two noun phrases in the “between” sense, especially in formal writing. The reliable cue is therefore not ובין by itself: בין אם...ובין אם... and בין ש...ובין ש... frame alternative clauses, while בין X לבין Y is the clearest everyday nominal frame.

Written connectors and register

Modern edited Hebrew has several higher-register coordinators. They are valid tools, not ornamental replacements to scatter through conversation.

ConnectorFunctionRegister
ואףand even / and also, emphatic addition(formal)
אולםbut / however(formal), ordinary edited prose
ברםhowever(formal), elevated
ואילוwhereas / while by contrast(formal), ordinary comparative prose

ההסכם לא פתר את הבעיה ואף יצר קשיים חדשים.

haheském lo patár et habe'ayá ve'áf yatsár kshayím khadashím

The agreement did not solve the problem and even created new difficulties. (formal)

המחלקה הראשונה עמדה ביעד, ואילו המחלקה השנייה נשארה מאחור.

hamakhlaká harishoná amdá bayá'ad, ve'ilu hamakhlaká hashniyá nish'ará me'akhór

The first department met its target, whereas the second fell behind. (formal prose)

In particular, ואילו meaning “whereas” is routine analytical prose; it is not inherently literary.

Common Mistakes

1. Writing ו־ as a separate word.

❌ הזמנתי מרק, סלט ו פסטה

Incorrect spelling — ו־ attaches directly to the final item: הזמנתי מרק, סלט ופסטה.

✅ הזמנתי מרק, סלט ופסטה לחלוק עם כולם.

hizmánti marák, salát upásta lakhalók im kulám

I ordered soup, salad and pasta to share with everyone.

2. Using אלא for ordinary contrast without a rejected alternative.

❌ הסרט ארוך אלא מעניין

Incorrect — bare אלא needs an explicit negative correction. Plain contrast takes אבל: הסרט ארוך אבל מעניין.

✅ הסרט לא קצר אלא ארוך ומעניין.

haséret lo katsár éla arókh ume'anyén

The film isn't short but rather long and interesting.

3. Misaligning a correlative pair.

❌ גם הוא הזמין מלון וגם טיסה

Incorrect as 'he booked both a hotel and a flight' — the first גם sits before הוא and therefore coordinates subjects. Put both halves before the two objects.

✅ הוא הזמין גם מלון וגם טיסה באותו ערב.

hu hizmín gam malón vegám tisá be'otó érev

He booked both a hotel and a flight that evening.

4. Leaving an או ש־ pair structurally unfinished.

❌ או שתתקשר או הודעה

Incorrect — או ש־ introduces a clause, while הודעה is a noun. Coordinate two clauses or two noun phrases, not one of each.

✅ או שתתקשר או שתשלח הודעה כשאתה יוצא.

o shetitkashér o shetishlákh hoda'á ksheatá yotsé

Either call or send a message when you leave. (to a man)

Key Takeaways

  • Coordination normally joins constituents of the same syntactic type; the result fills one larger slot.
  • ו־ attaches to the final item in an ordinary list. Repetition before every item is a live literary and rhetorical option.
  • או joins alternatives; או ש־ is especially useful for explicit clauses.
  • אבל contrasts, bare אלא corrects something already negated, and אלא ש־ means “except that.”
  • איחוי נסמכים such as חיילי ומפקדי היחידה is common Modern Hebrew despite a traditional prescriptive objection; repetition and a של rewrite are safe conservative alternatives.
  • Align גם...וגם and לא רק...אלא גם directly before the paired material.
  • בין X לבין Y is the clearest nominal “between” frame; בין אם...ובין אם... frames alternative clauses meaning “whether...or.”
