In nouns such as תסריט “screenplay” and תזמורת “orchestra,” the opening ת is not part of the lexical root. It belongs to the noun pattern, just as מ belongs to many מִקְטָל nouns. Recognizing that prefix exposes familiar families: ת־סרט belongs with סרט, while ת־זמורת belongs with זמר and לזמר.
This is a diagnostic page, not a replacement for the full mishkal overview. Its central warning matters as much as its pattern: initial ת is sometimes a mold consonant and sometimes a real radical. The family, not the first letter alone, decides.
תַּקְטִיל: a concrete noun shape
The abstract formula תַּקְטִיל places ת before a three-radical root and normally has /a/ after the prefix and stressed /i/ near the end. The table substitutes real roots for ק־ט־ל.
| Noun | Root | Meaning | Useful family evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| תַּסְרִיט | ס־ר־ט | screenplay, script | סֶרֶט “film” |
| תַּקְלִיט | ק־ל־ט | record, album | קָלַט “received, absorbed” |
| תַּפְקִיד | פ־ק־ד | role, duty, task | פָּקַד “visited, mustered” |
| תַּרְשִׁים | ר־ש־ם | diagram, scheme | רָשַׁם “recorded” |
| תַּכְשִׁיט | כ־ש־ט | piece of jewelry | לְקַשֵּׁט “to decorate” |
| תַּלְמִיד | ל־מ־ד | pupil, student | לָמַד “learned” |
The meanings cluster around concrete results, objects, roles, or people associated with an activity, but there is no reliable English suffix that translates the pattern. תלמיד names a person, תפקיד an assigned role, and תרשים a representation. The pattern helps recognition; it does not compute the dictionary definition.
קראתי את התסריט ברכבת וסיימתי אותו לפני שהגענו.
karáti et hatasrít barakévet vesiyámti otó lifnéi shehigánu
I read the screenplay on the train and finished it before we arrived.
מצאתי את התקליט הישן של אבא בארון.
matsáti et hataklít hayashán shel ába ba'arón
I found Dad's old record in the cupboard.
התפקיד הזה מתאים לך יותר מהתפקיד הקודם.
hatafkíd hazé mat'ím lekhá yotér mehatafkíd hakodém
This role suits you better than the previous one.
התרשים בעמוד הבא מסביר איך הנתונים קשורים זה לזה.
hatarshím ba'amúd habá masbír eikh hanetuním kshurím ze lazé
The diagram on the next page explains how the data are related.
היא ענדה תכשיט שסבתא שלה קיבלה לחתונה.
hi andá takhshít shesávta shelá kiblá lakhatuná
She wore a piece of jewelry that her grandmother had received for her wedding.
תִּקְטֹלֶת: arrangements, sets, and outward form
The second pattern, תִּקְטֹלֶת, is visible in a smaller but memorable group. Its nouns often refer to an organized ensemble, clothing or appearance—things understood as a configuration or set. That semantic tendency is useful but not exceptionless.
| Noun | Root | Meaning | Family |
|---|---|---|---|
| תִּזְמֹרֶת | ז־מ־ר | orchestra | זֶמֶר, לְזַמֵּר |
| תִּלְבֹּשֶׁת | ל־ב־ש | outfit, uniform, costume | לָבַשׁ, לְבוּשׁ |
| תִּסְרֹקֶת | ס־ר־ק | hairstyle | סֵירֵק, מַסְרֵק |
In all three plurals, final ת is replaced by ות: תזמורות, תלבושות, תסרוקות. The internal stem remains recognizable, and the initial ת remains part of the pattern in both numbers.
התזמורת תנגן הערב יצירה חדשה.
hatizmorét tenagén ha'érev yetsirá khadashá
The orchestra will perform a new work this evening.
הילדים כבר לבשו את התלבושות להצגה.
hayeladím kvar lavshú et hatilbushót lahatsagá
The children have already put on their costumes for the play.
התסרוקת החדשה ממש מחמיאה לך.
hatisróket hakhadashá mamásh makhmi'á lakh
The new hairstyle really suits you.
English learners may be tempted to translate ־ֶת as a feminine ending. These nouns are indeed grammatically feminine, but the whole template conveys the lexical shape. The ending alone does not explain why an orchestra, outfit, and hairstyle belong here.
Looser ת-initial formations
Not every prefixed ת noun matches either formula exactly. תערוכה “exhibition” belongs to ע־ר־ך, and תצוגה “display” belongs to י־צ־ג. Both use an initial pattern consonant and an ending, but their vowels and historical derivations differ from תַּקְטִיל and תִּקְטֹלֶת.
בתערוכה יש תצוגה חדשה של צילומים מירושלים.
bata'arukhá yesh tetsugá khadashá shel tsilumím mirushaláyim
The exhibition has a new display of photographs from Jerusalem.
This wider family resemblance is useful for root search, not for forcing every word into one named mishkal. A dictionary may group a noun more narrowly than a classroom mnemonic does.
When ת belongs to the root
Hebrew also has roots beginning in ת. In תפס “caught” the root is ת־פ־ס; in תיקן “repaired” the root is ת־ק־ן. Stripping the first consonant would invent two-consonant “roots” with no explanatory power.
השוטר תפס את הנהג ליד היציאה.
hashotér tafás et hanahág leyád hayetsi'á
The police officer caught the driver near the exit.
הטכנאי תיקן את המזגן בתוך שעה.
hatekhnái tikén et hamazgán betókh sha'á
The technician repaired the air conditioner within an hour.
Apply the family test: תפס, תפיסה, נתפס preserve ת across different molds, so it is radical. תיקן, תיקון, מתקן likewise preserve it. By contrast, the ת of תלמיד disappears in למד, לימד, לימוד.
Common Mistakes
1. Recording ת־ס־ר־ט as the root of תסריט. That confuses a pattern prefix with a radical.
❌ השורש של תסריט הוא ת־ס־ר־ט.
Incorrect — ת is the pattern prefix; the verified root is ס־ר־ט.
✅ תסריט וסרט שייכים לאותה משפחת מילים.
tasrít veséret shayakhím le'otá mishpákhat milím
תסריט and סרט belong to the same word family.
2. Removing every initial ת. The heuristic fails when ת is a radical.
❌ השורש של תפס הוא פ־ס.
Incorrect — the verb belongs to the three-radical root ת־פ־ס.
✅ תפס, תפיסה ונתפס שייכים לאותה משפחת מילים.
tafás, tfisá venitpás shayakhím le'otá mishpákhat milím
תפס, תפיסה, and נתפס belong to the same word family.
3. Treating the pattern as an exact meaning formula. A mishkal narrows expectations but does not translate the lexeme.
✅ המשקל עוזר לזהות מבנה; את המשמעות המדויקת לומדים עם המילה.
hamishkál ozér lezahót mivné; et hamashma'út hameduyéket lomdím im hamilá
The pattern helps identify structure; the precise meaning is learned with the word.
Evidence base
The roots, singular vocalizations, and plurals in the two inventories were checked entry by entry in Pealim: תסריט ס־ר־ט, תקליט ק־ל־ט, תפקיד פ־ק־ד, תרשים ר־ש־ם, תכשיט כ־ש־ט, תלמיד ל־מ־ד, תזמורת ז־מ־ר, תלבושת ל־ב־ש, תסרוקת ס־ר־ק, תערוכה ע־ר־ך, and תצוגה י־צ־ג. The broader family test follows the guide's root-and-dictionary method; the semantic labels are tendencies over this inventory, not claims that a mishkal mechanically predicts meaning.
Key Takeaways
- תַּקְטִיל includes familiar nouns such as תסריט, תפקיד, תרשים, and תלמיד.
- תִּקְטֹלֶת includes תזמורת, תלבושת, and תסרוקת, with a tendency toward sets and outward arrangements.
- תערוכה and תצוגה are useful looser relatives, not exact members of those two vocalic patterns.
- Strip initial ת only when a word family shows that it is a mold consonant; roots such as ת־פ־ס and ת־ק־ן genuinely begin with ת.
- Pattern recognition helps retrieve a root and anticipate a semantic neighborhood, not manufacture a definition.
