The everyday Hebrew preposition for “because of” is בגלל. Its most important grammatical split is visible: בגלל takes a noun phrase, while בגלל ש־ introduces a full finite clause. The same causal field also contains clause linker מפני ש־, formal noun-taking בשל and עקב, and appreciative בזכות “thanks to.” These forms overlap in meaning but differ in complement type and register.
בגלל + noun, בגלל ש־ + clause
Use בגלל directly before a person, thing, event noun or pronoun-like expression such as זה. Use בגלל ש־ when the cause has a subject and a finite verb.
נשארנו בבית בגלל הגשם.
nish'árnu babáyit biglál hagéshem
We stayed home because of the rain.
נשארנו בבית בגלל שירד גשם.
nish'árnu babáyit biglál sheyarád géshem
We stayed home because it rained.
הרכבת נעצרה בגלל תקלה במערכת החשמל.
harakévet ne'etsrá biglál takalá bema'arékhet hakhasmál
The train stopped because of a fault in the electrical system.
הרכבת נעצרה בגלל שהייתה תקלה במערכת החשמל.
harakévet ne'etsrá biglál shehaytá takalá bema'arékhet hakhasmál
The train stopped because there was a fault in the electrical system.
English helps partly by distinguishing because of the rain from because it rained, but learners often memorize בגלל as covering both and omit Hebrew ש־. The deeper rule is complement shape: nouns attach directly to a preposition; a clause needs a linker.
בגלל זה is the high-frequency result “because of that/that is why.” זה remains a pronoun after the preposition; it does not create a clause.
לא היה מקום באוטובוס, ובגלל זה חיכינו לאוטובוס הבא.
lo hayá makóm ba'otóbus, uviglál ze khikínu la'otóbus habá
There was no room on the bus, so we waited for the next one.
בגלל takes personal suffixes
Unlike English because of, בגלל can absorb a personal pronoun. “Because of me” is בגללי, not בגלל אני. The forms use the ordinary singular-style suffix set.
| Meaning | Pointed | Unpointed | Reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| because of me | בִּגְלָלִי | בגללי | biglalí |
| because of you (m.sg.) | בִּגְלָלְךָ | בגללך | biglalkhá |
| because of you (f.sg.) | בִּגְלָלֵךְ | בגללך | biglalékh |
| because of him | בִּגְלָלוֹ | בגללו | biglaló |
| because of her | בִּגְלָלָהּ | בגללה | biglalá |
| because of us | בִּגְלָלֵנוּ | בגללנו | biglalénu |
| because of them (m.) | בִּגְלָלָם | בגללם | biglalám |
הגענו באיחור בגללי, ואני ממש מצטערת.
higánu be'ikhúr biglalí, va'aní mamásh mitsta'éret
We arrived late because of me, and I'm really sorry. (f. speaker)
המשחק הופסק בגללם, לא בגלל מזג האוויר.
hamiskhák hufsák biglalám, lo biglál mézeg ha'avír
The match was stopped because of them, not because of the weather.
מפני and מפני ש־
מפני is historically built from מן “from” plus פנים “face/front.” Its older spatial-source sense survives in language of avoidance, protection and fear, while מפני ש־ is an established causal clause linker, roughly “because.” In present-day prose it is neutral to somewhat school-like; it usually follows the main clause and gives its reason. Detailed clause position and the rest of the conjunction inventory belong on causal conjunctions.
לא יצאנו לטייל מפני שהיה חם מדי.
lo yatsánu letayél mipnéi shehayá kham midái
We didn't go for a walk because it was too hot. (neutral/careful)
הילדים התרחקו מהכלב מפני שפחדו ממנו.
hayeladím hitrakhakú mehakélev mipnéi shepakhadú miménu
The children moved away from the dog because they were afraid of it.
Its personal forms reveal a plural-base paradigm, just like לפני. They occur especially with the older relational sense “from/before,” in combinations such as לפחד מפניו “to fear him” or להזהיר מפניה “to warn against her/it.” For an ordinary personal cause, everyday Hebrew normally uses בגלל: בגללו “because of him.”
| Person | Pointed | Unpointed | Reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| me | מִפָּנַיי | מפניי | mipanái |
| you (m.sg.) | מִפָּנֶיךָ | מפניך | mipanékha |
| you (f.sg.) | מִפָּנַיִיךְ | מפנייך | mipanáyikh |
| him | מִפָּנָיו | מפניו | mipanáv |
| her | מִפָּנֶיהָ | מפניה | mipanéha |
| us | מִפָּנֵינוּ | מפנינו | mipanéinu |
| them (m.) | מִפְּנֵיהֶם | מפניהם | mipneihém |
כולם הזהירו אותי מפניו, אבל לא הקשבתי.
kulám hizhíru otí mipanáv, avál lo hikshávti
Everyone warned me about him, but I didn't listen.
There has been stylistic argument about בגלל ש־, but the Academy of the Hebrew Language has not ruled it incorrect. Treat it as ordinary current speech, not as a mistake that needs “repair.”
A register ladder for the same cause
The following six sentences report the same fact. The change is not truth but setting: ordinary conversation prefers כי or בגלל ש־; careful or school-like prose can use מפני ש־; מכיוון ש־ is a written workhorse; בשל and עקב package the cause as a noun in (formal) news and official language.
המשחק בוטל כי ירד גשם.
hamiskhák butál ki yarád géshem
The match was cancelled because it rained. (neutral/everyday)
המשחק בוטל בגלל שירד גשם.
hamiskhák butál biglál sheyarád géshem
The match was cancelled because it rained. (everyday speech)
המשחק בוטל מפני שירד גשם.
hamiskhák butál mipnéi sheyarád géshem
The match was cancelled because it rained. (neutral/careful)
המשחק בוטל מכיוון שירד גשם.
hamiskhák butál mikeiván sheyarád géshem
The match was cancelled because it rained. (written)
המשחק בוטל בשל הגשם.
hamiskhák butál beshél hagéshem
The match was cancelled due to the rain. (formal/news)
המשחק בוטל עקב הגשם.
hamiskhák butál ékev hagéshem
The match was cancelled owing to the rain. (formal/official)
Only the last two require the cause to be nominal here. Do not create בשל ש־ or עקב ש־ by copying בגלל ש־. Formal Hebrew instead nominalizes the event: בשל הגשם, עקב התקלה, בשל מחלתו.
בזכות: a cause framed appreciatively
בזכות is ב־ plus זכות “merit/right.” It means “thanks to” and strongly tends to present the cause as helpful or responsible for a good result. בגלל is not barred from positive contexts; it is simply neutral about whether the speaker credits the cause appreciatively.
בזכותך הצלחתי לסיים בזמן.
bizkhutkhá hitslákhti lesayém bazmán
Thanks to you, I managed to finish on time. (to a man; appreciative)
בגלל העזרה שלך הצלחתי לסיים בזמן.
biglál ha'ezrá shelkhá hitslákhti lesayém bazmán
Because of your help, I managed to finish on time. (grammatical; neutral cause)
בזכות takes singular-style suffixes: בזכותי bizkhutí, בזכותך bizkhutkhá/bizkhutékh, בזכותו bizkhutó, בזכותה bizkhutá, בזכותנו bizkhuténu. Use the contrast to choose a stance, not to police positive בגלל out of the language.
האירוע הצליח בזכות המתנדבים.
ha'erúa hitslíakh bizkhút hamitnadvím
The event succeeded thanks to the volunteers.
Common Mistakes
1. Putting a finite clause after bare בגלל.
❌ החנות נסגרה מוקדם בגלל העובדת חלתה
Incorrect — העובדת חלתה is a clause, so בגלל needs ש־.
✅ החנות נסגרה מוקדם בגלל שהעובדת חלתה.
hakhanút nisgerá mukdám biglál sheha'ovédet khaltá
The shop closed early because the employee fell ill.
2. Adding ש־ before a noun cause.
❌ המשחק בוטל בגלל שהגשם
Incorrect — הגשם is a noun, not a clause: בגלל הגשם.
✅ המשחק בוטל בגלל הגשם הכבד.
hamiskhák butál biglál hagéshem hakavéd
The match was cancelled because of the heavy rain.
3. Extending ש־ to noun-only formal prepositions.
❌ הישיבה נדחתה בשל שהמנהל חלה
Incorrect — בשל takes a noun phrase, not a ש־ clause.
✅ הישיבה נדחתה בשל מחלתו של המנהל.
hayeshivá nidkhatá beshél makhalató shel hamenahél
The meeting was postponed because of the manager's illness. (formal)
4. Leaving a personal pronoun separate after בגלל.
❌ זה קרה בגלל אני
Incorrect — בגלל takes a personal suffix: בגללי.
✅ זה קרה בגללי, ואני אטפל בזה.
ze kará biglalí, va'aní atapél bazé
It happened because of me, and I'll take care of it.
Key Takeaways
- בגלל + noun contrasts with בגלל ש־ + finite clause.
- בגלל inflects: בגללי, בגללך, בגללו, בגללה, בגללנו, בגללם.
- מפני ש־ is a neutral/careful causal linker; its related personal forms מפניי and מפניו belong to a plural-base pattern.
- כי and בגלל ש־ are everyday; מכיוון ש־ is at home in writing; בשל and עקב are formal and noun-taking.
- בזכות tends to credit a cause for a good result; positive בגלל remains grammatical but more neutral.

- מכיוון ש־, היות ו־, בגלל ש־B2 — Above the everyday כי sits a whole shelf of because-words, and they are not interchangeable: the Academy pairs מפני ש־ and משום ש־ with a reason that follows the main clause, and כיוון ש־ and מאחר ש־ with one that can also come first — a split you can measure. Plus what the Academy really said about בגלל ש (it did not rule), and why היות ו־ is the one to avoid in writing.
- כי: BecauseA2 — כי is the everyday word for because — the natural answer to למה and the ordinary way to attach a reason mid-sentence, as in לא עניתי לך כי הטלפון היה על שקט. It is also a second thing that courses leave out: a complementiser meaning that, which is why נמסר כי and הודיע כי are standard news Hebrew rather than mistakes.
- למרות and אף על פי: DespiteB1 — Use למרות, על אף and חרף before noun phrases, then choose the fixed concessive connector that matches the register you need.
- מתי, למה, איך, כמהA2 — מתי asks when, למה asks why or what for, איך asks how, and כמה asks quantity, means a few in statements, and forms exclamations such as כמה יפה.
