Hebrew can express “in,” “from” and “to” with the compact prefixes ב־, מ־ and ל־. When the speaker wants to highlight a bounded interior, the noun תוך “interior/middle” supplies that meaning: בתוך “inside,” מתוך “out of/from within” and לתוך “into.” The three forms create a clean location–source–goal system, but they are not obligatory every time English uses in, out of or into.
The three-way contrast
The simplest way to understand the family is as a path through a container. בתוך gives the location inside it; מתוך looks backward to the interior as a source; לתוך looks forward to the interior as a goal.
| Role | Form | Literal structure | Typical question |
|---|---|---|---|
| location | בְּתוֹךְ — בתוך | ב־ “in” + תוך | Where is it? |
| source | מִתּוֹךְ — מתוך | מ־ “from” + תוך | Where did it emerge from? |
| goal | לְתוֹךְ — לתוך | ל־ “to” + תוך | Where did it move into? |
הדרכון נמצא בתוך המגירה השמאלית.
hadarkón nimtsá betókh hamegerá hasmalít
The passport is inside the left-hand drawer.
הוצאתי את הטלפון מתוך התיק כדי לענות.
hotséti et hatélefon mitókh hatík kdei la'anót
I took the phone out of the bag to answer.

kshehitkhíl hagéshem, hakélev rats letókh habáyit
When the rain started, the dog ran into the house.
Prefix alone or an explicit interior?
The basic prefixes often say enough. בבית simply locates someone at/in the house; בתוך הבית explicitly places them inside its walls. מהבית means “from the house,” while מתוך הבית presents the movement as emerging from its interior. לבית gives the house as destination; לתוך הבית makes the inward crossing salient.
הילדים בבית, אבל ההורים עדיין בעבודה.
hayeladím babáyit, avál hahorím adáyin ba'avodá
The children are at home, but the parents are still at work.
הילדים בתוך הבית כי קר בחוץ.
hayeladím betókh habáyit ki kar bakhúts
The children are inside the house because it's cold outside.
היא חזרה מהחנות עם לחם וחלב.
hi khazrá mehakhánut im lékhem vekhaláv
She came back from the shop with bread and milk.
החתול יצא מתוך הארון והבהיל אותי.
hekhatúl yatsá mitókh ha'arón vehivhíl otí
The cat came out of the wardrobe and startled me.
המים פרצו מתוך הצינור בלחץ חזק.
hamáyim partsú mitókh hatsinór belákhats khazák
Water burst out of the pipe under strong pressure.
English often requires different words for location (in) and directed motion (into). Hebrew can leave direction to the verb and use ל־, but לתוך is available when the boundary crossing matters. Conversely, translating every English in as בתוך makes ordinary Hebrew needlessly heavy. The choice is semantic emphasis, not a one-to-one vocabulary substitution.
מתוך beyond physical space
Because מתוך frames an interior as a source, it extends naturally from objects to mental states and motives. מתוך כבוד, מתוך פחד and מתוך סקרנות mean that respect, fear or curiosity is the state from which the action arose. This construction is neutral in careful speech and writing; it can sound more deliberate than a simple בגלל phrase because it presents the motive as internal.
היא שתקה מתוך כבוד למשפחה.
hi shatká mitókh kavód lamishpakhá
She remained silent out of respect for the family.
פתחתי את הקופסה מתוך סקרנות.
patákhti et hakufsá mitókh sakranút
I opened the box out of curiosity.
הוא הסכים מתוך פחד שיפטרו אותו.
hu hiskím mitókh pákhad sheyefatrú otó
He agreed out of fear that they would fire him.
The extension is conceptually regular: physical source “from inside the bag” becomes psychological source “from within fear.” It does not make מתוך a general replacement for “because of”; use it when a condition, feeling or principle motivates the agent.
Personal suffixes with בתוך
בתוך takes the ordinary singular-base suffix series. These forms avoid combinations such as בתוך אני. Third-person forms are natural when referring back to a container; first- and second-person forms are especially common in reflective or written descriptions of what exists “inside” someone. In very casual speech, speakers may instead use a fuller phrase.
| Meaning | Pointed | Unpointed | Reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| inside me | בְּתוֹכִי | בתוכי | betokhí |
| inside you (m.sg.) | בְּתוֹכְךָ | בתוכך | betokhekhá |
| inside him/it | בְּתוֹכוֹ | בתוכו | betokhó |
| inside her/it | בְּתוֹכָהּ | בתוכה | betokhá |
| inside us | בְּתוֹכֵנוּ | בתוכנו | betokhénu |
| inside them (m.) | בְּתוֹכָם | בתוכם | betokhám |
יש בתוכה כיס קטן למפתחות.
yesh betokhá kis katán lamaftekhót
There is a small pocket for keys inside it. (referring to a feminine noun, such as a bag)
ידעתי בתוכי שהוא צודק.
yadáti betokhí shehú tsodék
Deep down, I knew he was right. (reflective/written)
תוך in time expressions
Bare תוך also introduces a bounded time span: תוך שעה means “within an hour,” at some point before the hour has elapsed. It contrasts with בעוד שעה, “in one hour,” which points to the time roughly one hour from now.
אשלח לך תשובה תוך שעה.
eshlákh lekhá teshuvá tokh sha'á
I'll send you an answer within an hour. (to a man)
הפגישה תתחיל בעוד שעה.
hapgishá tatkhíl be'ód sha'á
The meeting will start in an hour.
The fixed frame תוך כדי means “while/during the course of.” It can be followed by a verbal noun, and wider clause patterns are covered with durative conjunctions.
דיברנו על התוכנית תוך כדי הנסיעה.
dibárnu al hatokhnít tokh kdei hanesi'á
We talked about the plan during the drive.
Do not attach an infinitive directly after תוך כדי. Its syntax uses a noun-like event expression or a ש־ clause, not the English pattern while doing copied word for word.
Common Mistakes
1. Confusing location inside with motion into. Both sentences are grammatical: בתוך locates the jumping inside the box, while לתוך marks the inward goal.
✅ החתול קפץ בתוך הקופסה.
hekhatúl kafáts betókh hakufsá
The cat jumped around inside the box. (location)
✅ החתול קפץ לתוך הקופסה ונרדם שם.
hekhatúl kafáts letókh hakufsá venirdám sham
The cat jumped into the box and fell asleep there.
2. Adding a second preposition after מתוך. The מ־ meaning “from” is already built into מתוך.
❌ הוצאתי את הארנק מתוך בתיק
Incorrect — do not add ב־ to the noun after מתוך.
✅ הוצאתי את הארנק מתוך התיק.
hotséti et ha'arnák mitókh hatík
I took the wallet out of the bag.
3. Using bare תוך as an ordinary spatial preposition. Bare תוך survives in time expressions and set frames; spatial “inside” normally requires בתוך.
❌ הוא מחכה תוך הבית
Incorrect as an ordinary locative phrase — use בתוך הבית.
✅ הוא מחכה בתוך הבית ליד הדלת.
hu mekhaké betókh habáyit leyád hadélet
He's waiting inside the house by the door.
4. Leaving a personal pronoun separate.
❌ הרגש הזה נשאר בתוך אני
Incorrect — בתוך takes a personal suffix: בתוכי, not בתוך אני.
✅ הרגש הזה נשאר בתוכי הרבה זמן.
harégesh hazé nish'ár betokhí harbé zman
That feeling stayed inside me for a long time. (reflective)
Key Takeaways
- בתוך marks an enclosed location, מתוך a source in the interior, and לתוך a goal in the interior.
- Basic ב־, מ־ and ל־ are often enough; the תוך family adds boundedness or emphasizes crossing a boundary.
- מתוך extends naturally to motives such as מתוך כבוד and מתוך פחד.
- Bare תוך is normal in time expressions such as תוך שעה and in the frame תוך כדי.
- Use suffixes for personal reference: בתוכי, בתוכו, בתוכה, בתוכנו.
