Literary Connectors: כי אם, אף כי, ברם, אולם

Read this page for recognition, not for deployment. Everything on it belongs to editorials, court judgments, academic prose and literary translation, and the single fastest way to sound wrong in Hebrew is to take these words out of a newspaper and put them into a conversation. The everyday contrast words are on אבל and אלא; the register question itself is on literary style.

One paragraph, twice

Nothing explains these words as fast as watching what they replace. The first of each pair is a line from a constructed news editorial; the second is the same content as a person would say it.

ועדת הכספים אישרה אתמול את התקציב, ברם ההצבעה עצמה נדחתה בשבוע.

va'adát hakesafím ishrá etmól et hataktsív, bram hahatsba'á atsmá nidkhatá beshavúa

The finance committee approved the budget yesterday, but the vote itself was put back a week. (editorial)

ועדת הכספים אישרה אתמול את התקציב, אבל ההצבעה עצמה נדחתה בשבוע.

va'adát hakesafím ishrá etmól et hataktsív, avál hahatsba'á atsmá nidkhatá beshavúa

Plain Hebrew — ברם is nothing more than אבל.

הדחייה אינה טכנית, כי אם תוצאה של מחלוקת עמוקה בקואליציה.

hadkhiyá einá tekhnít, ki im totsa'á shel makhlóket amuká bakoalítsya

The postponement is not technical but the outcome of a deep split in the coalition. (editorial)

הדחייה היא לא טכנית, אלא תוצאה של ויכוח עמוק בקואליציה.

hadkhiyá hi lo tekhnít, éla totsa'á shel vikúakh amók bakoalítsya

Plain Hebrew — כי אם is the literary אלא, and the negative אינה becomes היא לא.

שני שרים הודיעו שלא יתמכו בנוסח שהוצע, ומכאן שאין לקואליציה רוב.

shnei sarím hodí'u sheló yitmekhú banusákh shehutsá, umikán she'éin lakoalítsya rov

Two ministers have said they will not support the proposed wording, from which it follows that the coalition has no majority. (editorial)

שני שרים אמרו שהם לא יתמכו בנוסח שהציעו, אז אין לקואליציה רוב.

shnei sarím amrú shehém lo yitmekhú banusákh shehitsí'u, az ein lakoalítsya rov

Plain Hebrew — ומכאן ש collapses to אז, and the passive הוצע becomes an impersonal plural.

יתר על כן, גם באופוזיציה אין הסכמה על חלופה.

yatér al ken, gam ba'opozítsya ein haskamá al khalufá

Moreover, the opposition too has no agreement on an alternative. (editorial)

וחוץ מזה, גם באופוזיציה לא מסכימים על משהו אחר.

vekhúts mizé, gam ba'opozítsya lo maskimím al máshehu akhér

Plain Hebrew — יתר על כן is וחוץ מזה.

אי לכך צפויה הישיבה הבאה להיות ארוכה במיוחד.

i lekhákh tsfuyá hayeshivá haba'á lihyót aruká bimyukhád

Accordingly, the next sitting is expected to be a long one. (editorial — note the verb-first inversion that comes with the register)

אז הישיבה הבאה כנראה תהיה ארוכה במיוחד.

az hayeshivá haba'á kanir'é tihyé aruká bimyukhád

Plain Hebrew — אי לכך is אז, and the אי in it is not a negative.

💡
Read the plain versions again and notice how few words are doing the work: אבל, אלא, אז, וחוץ מזה. Spoken Hebrew connects clauses with a very small set of connectors and lets the sentences stay short. The literary register does the opposite — a different word for every logical relation, and long sentences to hang them on.

Contrast: ברם, אולם, אך

ברם is the most marked of the three and the one with the best story. It is Aramaic: it opens Ezra 5:13, בְּרַם בִּשְׁנַת חֲדָה לְכוֹרֶשׁ מַלְכָּא, and he.wiktionary derives it from a compressed בַּר מַאי. Milog defines it as a מילת קישור ספרותית, a literary connective, and it turns up in 463 Hebrew Wikipedia articles (insource:/ ברם /, regex form, 17 August 2026).

אולם is far commoner and carries no such label. The Academy's dictionary files it as a מילת קישור meaning מילת חיבור לניגוד או להסתייגות, אֲבָל — and adds a note worth having: in the Bible it appears only with the conjunctive vav, וְאוּלָם, as in וְאוּלָם לוּז שֵׁם הָעִיר לָרִאשֹׁנָה (Genesis 28:19).

אך is the mildest of the three, and Milog gives it three senses, none of them labelled: אבל, then רק, בלבד (טעמתי מהעוגה אך כזית), then זה עתהjust now, as in החייל אך הגיע. That last one is the sense that ambushes readers.

הניסוי הצליח במעבדה. אולם בתנאי שדה התוצאות היו שונות לחלוטין.

hanisúy hitslíakh bama'badá. ulám bitna'éi sadé hatotsa'ót hayú shonót lakhalutín

The experiment worked in the lab. In field conditions, however, the results were entirely different. (academic)

The concessive אף כי is handled where its history is, on concessive conjunctions.

Cause and inference

שכן is the one to learn first, because it is short and appears constantly. Milog glosses it היות ש־, מפני ש־ and illustrates it with a perfectly ordinary sentence.

ביטלתי את הפגישה, שכן ממילא לא נותר מה להוסיף.

bitálti et hapgishá, shekén mimeilá lo notár ma lehosíf

I cancelled the meeting, since there was nothing left to add in any case.

הואיל ו־ deserves one correction, because it looks like a mistake and is not. It is not a stray ו standing in for a subordinating ש: the Academy explains it as a genuine Mishnaic formation, a shortening of a pair of verbs joined by the conjunctive ו — of the type הואיל (ניאות) והודה — which is precisely why it is the model that the non-standard היות ו־ imitates. That whole family, with מאחר ש־, is on causal conjunctions.

Then the inference markers, which are near-synonyms and differ mainly in weight: לפיכך, על כן, אי לכך (196 articles) and ומכאן ש, the last of which specifically says from which it follows that rather than merely therefore.

Organising a written argument

הטופס יוגש בשני עותקים. כמו כן יש לצרף אישור מהמעסיק.

hatófes yugásh bishnéi otakím. kmo ken yesh letsaréf ishúr mehama'asík

The form is to be submitted in two copies. In addition, a letter from the employer must be attached. (official)

התוצאות מעודדות. עם זאת, מדובר במדגם קטן.

hatotsa'ót me'odedót. im zot, meduvár bemidgám katán

The results are encouraging. That said, this is a small sample. (academic)

One item here needs fixing rather than labelling. The additive marker everyone writes as יתרה מזאת is not the form the dictionaries carry: they lexicalise יְתֵרָה מִזּוֹ and יָתֵר עַל כֵּן. Both spellings are live — 33 Wikipedia articles for יתרה מזו against 23 for יתרה מזאת — so this is a preference and not an error, but if you want the form a dictionary will back, write מזו.

What the dictionaries actually label

It is tempting to present a page like this as a ladder from neutral to elevated. Run the whole list through Milog and the ladder does not appear: of the sixteen items below, exactly one comes back with a register label.

Two cautions about that table, and they pull in opposite directions. An empty label is not an endorsement: it records that the dictionary made no register statement, and several of these are words no Israeli produces in speech from one year to the next. And no source consulted for this guide measures how any of them behave in conversation — so where this page tells you to leave a word on the page, that is a register judgement made here and not a finding anyone has published.

💡
The failure mode this page exists to prevent is specific and very common: a learner who reads Hebrew news gets these words for free, deploys them in speech, and produces sentences that are flawless on paper and faintly comic out loud. If you are speaking, use אבל, אז, כי and חוץ מזה, and let the rest stay on the page. The wider pattern is on register mismatch.

Common Mistakes

1. Taking ברם out of the newspaper. Both of these are good Hebrew. Only one of them is a thing to say.

✅ ניסינו להזמין מקום, ברם כל המסעדות היו מלאות.

nisínu lehazmín makóm, bram kol hamis'adót hayú mele'ót

We tried to book a table, but every restaurant was full. (Milog labels ברם a literary connective — this belongs on a page)

✅ ניסינו להזמין מקום, אבל כל המסעדות היו מלאות.

nisínu lehazmín makóm, avál kol hamis'adót hayú mele'ót

The same sentence out loud.

2. Using כי אם as a plain but. It is the literary אלא, so it replaces something you have just denied and needs a negative in front of it. Without one, the reader parses the two words separately and gets because if.

❌ רציתי לעזור כי אם לא היה לי זמן

I wanted to help but I didn't have time

Incorrect as that meaning — with nothing denied beforehand, כי אם reads as two words, 'because if'. After a positive statement the word is אבל: רציתי לעזור אבל לא היה לי זמן.

✅ לא רציתי להתערב כי אם רק להבין מה קרה.

lo ratsíti lehit'arév ki im rak lehavín ma kará

I didn't want to interfere, only to understand what had happened.

3. Reading the אי of אי לכך as a negative. Hebrew really does have a negating אי־ — אי־הבנה, אי־שוויון — and it is not this one.

❌ אי לכך הבקשה נדחתה

the request was therefore not rejected

Incorrect as that reading — אי לכך is a fixed phrase meaning 'accordingly, therefore'. The sentence says the request was rejected as a result.

✅ הטופס הוגש באיחור, אי לכך הוא לא ייכלל במכרז הזה.

hatófes hugásh be'ikhúr, i lekhákh hu lo yikalél bamikhráz hazé

The form was submitted late, and accordingly it will not be included in this tender. (official)

4. יתרה מזאת where the dictionaries have מזו. A preference rather than an error, and worth knowing which way it runs.

✅ התוכנית יקרה; יתרה מזו, אין לה תקדים בשום מקום.

hatokhnít yekará; yeterá mizó, ein la takdím beshúm makóm

The plan is expensive; what is more, there is no precedent for it anywhere. (the lexicalised form)

✅ התוכנית יקרה; יתרה מזאת, אין לה תקדים בשום מקום.

hatokhnít yekará; yeterá mizót, ein la takdím beshúm makóm

Also current — 23 Wikipedia articles against 33 for מזו — but not the form a dictionary carries.

Key Takeaways

  • Everything here is for reading. In speech the same jobs are done by אבל, אלא, אז, כי, חוץ מזה and very little else.
  • ברם is Aramaic, from Ezra 5:13, and is the one item on this page a dictionary labels — Milog calls it a מילת קישור ספרותית. It means אבל.
  • אולם carries no label and is ordinary written Hebrew; in the Bible it occurs only as וְאוּלָם. אך has three senses, and the third, זה עתה, is the one that trips readers.
  • כי אם is the literary אלא: it needs a preceding negative, or the two words fall apart into because if.
  • הואיל ו־ is not an error. It is a genuine Mishnaic contraction of two verbs joined by a conjunctive ו — which is exactly why the non-standard היות ו־ copies it.
  • An unlabelled dictionary entry proves nothing about register, in either direction, and no source consulted here describes how any of these behave in speech.
  • Write יְתֵרָה מִזּוֹ or יָתֵר עַל כֵּן; יתרה מזאת is current but is not the lexicalised form.
