Written Hebrew has a habit that spoken Hebrew mostly does not: it packs a background circumstance into an opener with no finite verb in it and drops it in front of the main clause. This page is a reading skill — the danger with these is not failing to recognise the words, it is reading them as something else entirely. Adjuncts with an explicit pronoun subject are on participial adjuncts, and when this register is appropriate at all is on literary style.
The ו that does not mean "and"
Hebrew grammar has a name for this construction — פסוקית מצב, a clause of state — and the Academy's punctuation rules use one as a worked example, in the section on when a comma may precede a subordinate clause (§10, example 15; Wayback snapshot of the Academy's כללי הפיסוק, 25 April 2026):
לאחר שעה קלה הופיעה בחצר, ושתי צמותיה החומות כרוכות סביב ראשה ככתר.
le'akhár sha'á kalá hofí'a bekhatsér, ushtéi tsamotéha hakhumót krukhót savív roshá kekhéter
A little while later she appeared in the yard, her two brown plaits wound round her head like a crown. (the Academy marks the second half as a clause of state)
Translate that ו as and and you get nonsense: "she appeared in the yard, and her plaits wound round her head" reads as a second event. There is no second event. The ו introduces a subject plus a non-verbal predicate — here the passive participle כרוכות — and the whole clause describes the state of affairs at the same time as the main verb. English does this with with, or with a bare participial phrase, or with nothing at all.
The tell is mechanical and reliable: after the ו there is a subject and then something that is not a finite verb — an adjective, a passive participle, a prepositional phrase.
הוא יצא מהחדר והדלת פתוחה לרווחה, כאילו כלום לא קרה.
hu yatsá mehakhéder vehadélet ptukhá lirvakhá, ke'ílu klum lo kará
He walked out of the room with the door wide open, as if nothing had happened.
ישבנו לאכול והמזגן כבוי, כי החשמל נפל באותו בוקר.
yashávnu le'ekhól vehamazgán kavúy, ki hakhashmál nafál be'otó bóker
We sat down to eat with the air conditioner off, because the power had gone out that morning.
One honest boundary. The attested example and the two above all have an adjectival or passive predicate — כרוכות, פתוחה, כבוי. A version with an active participle after the ו is not exemplified in the source this page relies on, so treat the passive-and-adjective shape as the pattern you can bank on, and read anything wider from the sentence in front of you rather than from a rule.
Four frozen openers
Modern written Hebrew has a small set of prepositions built out of ב־ or ל־ plus a noun or infinitive, all of which open a sentence and none of which has a good spoken equivalent. Three of the four take a noun phrase and nothing else. בהינתן, the one whose home is mathematics and the sciences, also takes a ש־clause: one probe shape down the whole column (he.wikipedia, insource: regex, 17 August 2026) gives בהינתן שה 69 against לנוכח שה 1 and בהיעדר שה 0 — the בהינתן hits read by hand and genuinely complementisers, while לאור שה's 40 are the unrelated הוצאה לאור ש־.
| Opener | Pointed | Reading | Register |
|---|---|---|---|
| בהינתן | בְּהִינָּתֵן | given, assuming (a datum or a premise) | (formal) — technical and academic writing |
| לנוכח | לְנוֹכַח | in view of, in the face of (circumstances) | (formal) — news and official prose |
| בהיעדר | בְּהֵיעָדֵר | in the absence of | (formal) — legal and administrative |
| לאור | לְאוֹר | in the light of, following from | (formal) — very widespread in writing |
בהינתן התקציב שאושר, נצטרך לוותר על אחד הפרויקטים.
behinatén hataktsív she'ushár, nitstarékh levatér al akhád haproyéktim
Given the budget that was approved, we'll have to drop one of the projects.
בהינתן שהתקציב אושר, אפשר להתחיל בעבודות כבר החודש.
behinatén shehataktsív ushár, efshár lehatkhíl ba'avodót kvar hakhódesh
Given that the budget was approved, work can start this month. (the minimal pair with the sentence above — there a noun with a relative clause hanging off it, here a clause outright, which is a shape only בהינתן allows)
לנוכח הביקורת הציבורית החליט המשרד לבחון מחדש את ההחלטה.
lenókhakh habikóret hatsiburít hekhlít hamisrád livkhón mekhadásh et hahakhlatá
In view of the public criticism the ministry decided to review the decision. (news register, and note the verb standing before its subject)
בהיעדר תשובה מהצד השני נאלצנו לפנות לערכאות.
behe'adér tshuvá mehatsád hashení ne'elátsnu lifnót le'arka'ót
In the absence of any reply from the other side we had to go to court.
לאור התוצאות של הרבעון האחרון ההנהלה החליטה להרחיב את הצוות.
le'ór hatotsa'ót shel hariv'ón ha'akharón hahanhalá hekhlíta leharkhív et hatsévet
In the light of last quarter's results, management decided to expand the team.
לאור the Academy has discussed directly, and the entry is unusually informative about register. Its source, the Academy says, is "in the languages of Europe, for example in English: in (the) light of"; in Hebrew it dates "apparently from the first half of the twentieth century, as the press of the period shows", and it is "widespread in the Hebrew of our day and characteristic above all of the written and official language". Watch who is speaking, though, because the entry is a chain of attributions: the calque charge (תרגום בבואה) is made by those who reject the expression, and the Academy answers that this argument on its own is not enough. Likewise, it is many language editors (מתקני לשון רבים) who recommend keeping לאור for positive or neutral contexts, so that לאור ההצלחה is preferred to לאור המשבר — not the Academy, which closes by calling the whole matter one of phrasing and style, left to the writer's judgement and taste (Wayback snapshot, 23 June 2025).
The suffixed infinitive: בהיותו, בהגיעו, בבואי
The second construction is older and denser. It is ב־ plus an infinitive construct plus a possessive suffix, and the suffix is the subject: בְּהִינָּתֵן has no subject, but בִּהְיוֹתוֹ says "in his being". The formation is Biblical and is still fully alive in written Hebrew — בהיותו alone returns a four-figure count in he.wikipedia (regex insource:, 17 August 2026, and above about a thousand such a figure is a floor rather than an exact count).
| Verb | With a suffix | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| היה | בהיותי, בהיותו, בהיותה, בהיותנו | when I was / he was / she was / we were |
| בא | בבואי, בבואו, בבואם | on my / his / their arrival |
| הגיע | בהגיעו, בהגיעה | on his / her reaching |
| יצא | בצאתי, בצאתו | as I / he left |
בהיותו סטודנט הוא עבד במשמרות לילה כדי לממן את הלימודים.
bihyotó studént hu avád bemishmerót láyla kdei lemamén et halimudím
As a student he worked night shifts to pay for his degree.
בהגיעו לתחנה גילה שהרכבת האחרונה כבר יצאה.
behagi'ó latakhaná gilá sheharakévet ha'akharoná kvar yats'á
On reaching the station he found that the last train had already gone.
בבואי לארץ לא ידעתי מילה אחת בעברית.
bevo'í la'árets lo yadáti milá akhát be'ivrít
When I came to Israel I didn't know one word of Hebrew.
Nobody says any of this at a bus stop. The everyday twin of the first sentence is a plain כש־ clause:
כשהוא היה סטודנט הוא עבד במשמרות לילה, ובקושי ישן.
kshehú hayá studént hu avád bemishmerót láyla, uvekóshi yashán
When he was a student he worked night shifts and hardly slept. (the same content, ordinary spoken register)
Five openers and what they unpack to
| Compressed (written) | Unpacked (what you would say) |
|---|---|
Three sentences to read
Do not translate these; parse them. For each one, find the finite verb of the main clause first, then decide what the opener is contributing.
| Sentence | What the opener does |
|---|---|
| בהיעדר מכסה מספקת נדחתה ההצבעה לשבוע הבא | a condition that failed. The main clause is נדחתה ההצבעה, verb before subject; the opener names why. |
| הוא ענה לשאלות העיתונאים וידיו רועדות | a state, not an event. There is no finite verb after the ו, so ידיו רועדות is how he was while answering. |
| בבואם לעיר לא הכירו איש, ובתוך שנה פתחו חנות | time. בבואם is "when they arrived"; the subject of the main verb הכירו is the same "they", carried only by the suffix. |
Common Mistakes
1. Reading the ו of state as "and". The single most consequential error on this page, because it silently produces a plausible wrong sentence.
❌ היא נכנסה לחדר והתריסים מוגפים
she came into the room and then the shutters were closed
Incorrect as a reading. The Hebrew is well formed; the English is not. מוגפים is a passive participle with no finite verb behind it, so the clause gives the state of the room: she came into the room with the shutters closed.
✅ היא נכנסה לחדר והתריסים מוגפים, וישבה בחושך עד הערב.
hi nikhnesá lakhéder vehatrisím mugafím, veyashvá bakhóshekh ad ha'érev
She came into the room with the shutters closed, and sat in the dark until evening.
2. Giving the suffixed infinitive a separate pronoun. English in his being young has two words, so the hand reaches for two words in Hebrew as well. The subject is the suffix.
❌ בהיות הוא צעיר הוא גר בקיבוץ
Incorrect — the pronoun fuses onto the infinitive: בהיותו צעיר. In he.wikipedia בהיות הוא returns 0, against a four-figure floor for בהיותו.
✅ בהיותו צעיר הוא גר בקיבוץ בעמק ועבד ברפת.
bihyotó tsa'ír hu gar bekibúts ba'émek ve'avád baréfet
As a young man he lived on a kibbutz in the valley and worked in the cowshed.
3. Hanging a clause on a frozen opener that will not take one. לנוכח, בהיעדר and לאור are prepositions, and a preposition takes a noun. To attach a whole clause to לנוכח or לאור you hang it on the noun העובדה first. (בהינתן, as above, is the one that will take the clause directly.)
❌ לנוכח שהמצב השתנה ביטלנו את הנסיעה
Incorrect — לנוכח takes a noun phrase: לנוכח השינוי במצב, or with a clause hung on a noun, לנוכח העובדה שהמצב השתנה. Measured in he.wikipedia on 17 August 2026, לנוכח שהוא returns 0 while לנוכח העובדה returns 125.
✅ לנוכח השינוי הפתאומי במצב ביטלנו את הנסיעה ברגע האחרון.
lenókhakh hashinúy hapit'omí bamatsáv bitálnu et hanesi'á baréga ha'akharón
In view of the sudden change in the situation we cancelled the trip at the last minute.
4. Assuming the compressed version is the "better" one. It is not better; it is elsewhere. לאור המצב in a text message to a friend reads exactly as stiffly as the English in light of the foregoing would. The unpacking table above runs in both directions, and the everyday column is the one you should be producing.
Key Takeaways
- A ו followed by a subject and a non-finite predicate is a פסוקית מצב, a clause of state, and the English is with, not and: הוא יצא מהחדר והדלת פתוחה.
- The construction is attested with adjectival and passive predicates (כרוכות, פתוחה, כבוי); do not generalise past that on the strength of a rule.
- The four frozen openers — בהינתן, לנוכח, בהיעדר, לאור — all belong to writing. Three of them take a noun phrase only, so a clause has to be hung on a noun first: לנוכח העובדה ש־. בהינתן is the exception and takes a ש־clause directly.
- לאור came into Hebrew from the European languages in the first half of the twentieth century, and the Academy calls it characteristic of the written and official language. Two things the Academy does not say: that the calque objection is decisive, or that you should keep לאור out of negative contexts — that advice is the language editors'.
- ב־ + infinitive + possessive suffix — בהיותו, בהגיעו, בבואי — carries its subject in the suffix, with no separate pronoun. It is a reading skill; the spoken equivalent is a plain כש־ clause.
