Superlatives: הכי and ביותר

Once you can say bigger than, the step to the biggest is small — but Hebrew makes it twice, with two markers that sit on opposite sides of the adjective. הכי hakhí goes in front, ביותר beyotér goes behind, and they are not interchangeable in the way a synonym list would suggest: each one requires a different shape around it. Comparing two things is on יותר … מ־; saying they are equal is on as … as.

The structural rule first

The CET/מטח school-grammar chapter ביטויי הפלגה: הכי – ביותר states the distribution in three lines, and they are worth learning as three lines rather than as a feel.

MarkerWhere it goesIts own example
הכיbefore an adverbהוּא שׂוֹחֶה הֲכִי מַהֵר — he swims fastest
הכיbetween a definite noun and an article-less adjectiveזֶהוּ הַשַּׂחְיָין הֲכִי מָהִיר בָּעוֹלָם
ביותרafter a noun whose adjective carries the articleזוֹהִי הַשַּׂחְיָינִית הַמְּהִירָה בְּיוֹתֵר בָּעוֹלָם

Read the last two rows against each other. In השחיין הכי מהיר the adjective is bare — no ה — which is the one place in the language where a definite noun tolerates a bare adjective in a phrase, and it is הכי that licenses it. In השחיינית המהירה ביותר the adjective has its article back, exactly as definiteness agreement would demand, and ביותר is simply appended. And notice that the feminine runs the whole way through the second one — השחיינית, המהירה — while ביותר itself never inflects for anything.

זה הסרט הכי טוב שראיתי השנה.

ze haséret hakhí tov shera'íti hashaná

This is the best film I've seen this year.

היא הכי מהירה בכיתה, אף אחד לא מתקרב.

hi hakhí mehirá bakitá, af ekhád lo mitkarév

She's the fastest in the class — nobody comes close.

הוא רץ הכי מהר בקבוצה, אבל בכדורגל הוא לא משהו.

hu rats hakhí mahér bakvutsá, avál bekhadurégel hu lo máshehu

He runs the fastest in the team, but at football he's nothing special. (informal — לא משהו)

לדעתי היא הסופרת החשובה ביותר בדור שלה.

leda'tí hi hasoféret hakhashuvá beyotér badór shelá

In my view she's the most important novelist of her generation. (formal/written)

זו התוכנית המפורטת ביותר שראינו עד היום.

zo hatokhnít hamefurétet beyotér shera'ínu ad hayóm

This is the most detailed plan we've seen to date. (formal)

💡
This is the one place the definiteness rule bends. Everywhere else, an adjective inside a definite noun phrase carries its own ה — that is the whole of definiteness agreement. After הכי it does not, and nothing you already know predicts that. Treat it as a fact about the word הכי rather than as something to reason out, and it stops feeling unstable.

What can honestly be said about register

You will hear that הכי is spoken and ביותר is written. That is a widely reported observation, not a rule, and this build could not source a normative body ruling on it — so take it as a description of where the two turn up, and never as a verdict on either. Both are entirely correct Hebrew.

The observation does have measurable support in edited prose. Counting Hebrew Wikipedia with an insource:/…/ regex search on 10 August 2026 — figures this size are floors, not exact counts, so read the ratio and not the digits — הטוב ביותר outnumbers הכי טוב by roughly 9 : 1 (19,447 : 2,101), and הגבוה ביותר outnumbers הכי גבוה by roughly 6 : 1 (7,237 : 1,149). That is one corpus of edited encyclopedic writing, which is exactly the register where ביותר is expected to win; it says nothing at all about how anyone speaks. In conversation הכי is what you will hear, and it is not a lesser form.

💡
The most useful way to hold this: הכי is never wrong, ביותר is never casual. A learner who uses only הכי will sound like an ordinary Israeli in every situation. A learner who uses only ביותר will sound like a press release at a barbecue. If you are going to over-use one, over-use הכי.

ביותר without the article is a different word

Here is the trap that the register story hides. Strip the article off the adjective and ביותר stops being a superlative — it becomes an intensifier meaning extremely. Dictionaries list both senses side by side: Milog gives both "מאוד, במיוחד" and "הכי" for ביותר, and its own illustrations of the first sense are הופעה חזקה ביותר and נימוק חזק ביותר, neither of which is claiming to be the strongest one that exists.

WrittenReadsMeans
ההחלטה החשובה ביותרhahakhlatá hakhashuvá beyotérthe most important decision
החלטה חשובה ביותרhakhlatá khashuvá beyotéran extremely important decision

One ה, two different claims — the same knife-edge that separates a phrase from a sentence elsewhere in the adjective system. הכי has no such double life: it is only ever a superlative.

מדובר בהחלטה חשובה ביותר, ולא רק מבחינה כלכלית.

medubár behakhlatá khashuvá beyotér, veló rak mibkhiná kalkalít

This is an extremely important decision, and not only in economic terms. (formal — indefinite adjective, so ביותר is 'extremely')

The frames you will actually need

A superlative plus a relative clause is the commonest superlative in speech, and it is built exactly as above — definite noun, הכי, bare adjective, then ש־.

זאת הייתה החופשה הכי טובה שהייתה לנו.

zot haytá hakhufshá hakhí tová shehaytá lánu

That was the best holiday we've ever had.

Out of a group takes מ־, the same preposition the comparative uses. With a pronoun it suffixes — מכולם "of them all" — and with a noun you can also use מבין "from among", which is a shade more formal.

האוכל שלה הכי טוב מכולם, ואין על זה ויכוח.

ha'ókhel shelá hakhí tov mikulám, ve'éin al ze vikúakh

Her cooking is the best of the lot, and there's no arguing about it.

הוא הצעיר מבין הנהגים, אבל הוא היחיד שאף פעם לא איחר.

hu hatsa'ír mibéin hanehagím, avál hu hayakhíd she'áf pá'am lo ekhér

He's the youngest of the drivers, but he's the only one who has never been late. (formal — and note the superlative here is carried by the article alone: הצעיר)

That last example shows the third option: a definite adjective on its own, with no marker at all, can carry a superlative — הצעיר מבין, הגבוה מכולם. It is the formal register's shortest route, and it is the same standing-adjective construction described on adjectives used as nouns.

Common Mistakes

1. Giving the adjective its article back after הכי. Everything you learned about definiteness agreement pushes you to write it, and this is the one construction that forbids it.

❌ הסרט הכי הטוב

Incorrect — after הכי the adjective takes no article: הסרט הכי טוב. If you want the article on the adjective, the marker has to be ביותר: הסרט הטוב ביותר.

✅ הבחירה הכי טובה היא פשוט לקנות כרטיס מראש.

habekhirá hakhí tová hi pashút liknót kartís merósh

The best option is simply to buy a ticket in advance.

2. Stacking both markers. You learn הכי, then you learn ביותר, and the two get welded together for emphasis.

❌ הסרט הכי טוב ביותר

Incorrect — הכי and ביותר are two ways of building one superlative, and a phrase takes one of them: הסרט הכי טוב, or הסרט הטוב ביותר.

✅ זה המקום הכי יפה בעיר, ואף אחד לא מכיר אותו.

ze hamakóm hakhí yafé ba'ír, ve'áf ekhád lo makír otó

This is the prettiest spot in town, and nobody knows about it.

3. Putting ביותר where English puts most. English marks the superlative in front of the adjective, so ביותר migrates there too. It cannot: ביותר only ever follows.

❌ הסרט ביותר טוב

Incorrect — ביותר always follows its adjective and the adjective keeps its article: הסרט הטוב ביותר.

✅ זו התמונה היפה ביותר בתערוכה, בלי שום ספק.

zo hatmuná hayafá beyotér bata'arukhá, bli shum safék

This is the loveliest picture in the exhibition, without a doubt. (formal/written register)

4. Using הכי to mean most in the sense of the majority. English uses one word for both — the most beautiful, most people — and Hebrew uses two completely unrelated ones. Quantity is רוב.

❌ הכי אנשים כאן לא מדברים אנגלית

Incorrect — הכי builds a superlative, never a quantity. 'Most people' is רוב האנשים: רוב האנשים כאן לא מדברים אנגלית.

✅ רוב האנשים כאן בכלל לא מדברים אנגלית.

rov ha'anashím kan bikhlál lo medabrím anglít

Most people here don't speak English at all.

Key Takeaways

  • Two markers, one job: הכי before the adjective, ביותר after it. Neither inflects.
  • The distribution is structural: הכי sits between a definite noun and an article-less adjective (הסרט הכי טוב); ביותר follows an adjective that keeps its article (הסרט הטוב ביותר). הכי also fronts adverbs — הכי מהר.
  • The spoken/written split is a reported tendency, not a rule. In edited prose ביותר leads roughly 9 : 1 for טוב and 6 : 1 for גבוה; in conversation הכי is normal and correct.
  • ביותר after an indefinite adjective is not a superlative at all — החלטה חשובה ביותר is "an extremely important decision".
  • Out of a group: מכולם with a pronoun, מבין with a noun. A bare definite adjective — הצעיר מבין הנהגים — is the formal register's own superlative.
  • הכי טוב ביותר stacks two markers; pick one. And רוב, not הכי, is the word for most in the quantity sense.

  • Comparatives: יותר … מ־A2Hebrew has no -er suffix and no word for than. Comparison is built from two free pieces — יותר (or פחות) beside the adjective, and מ־ glued to whatever you are comparing against — and the second piece is where English speakers come unstuck, because מ־ is a prefix and a prefix cannot stand in front of a pronoun.
  • As … As: כמו, כ־, באותה מידהB2English wraps a comparison of equality in a two-part frame — as tall as — and Hebrew has no first half at all: it just says גבוה כמוני. That missing slot is where learners put כל כך, which turns the sentence into something else entirely, and the fix is to stop looking for it.
  • Adjectives Used as Nouns: הקטן, החדשיםB2Put the article on a Hebrew adjective and leave the noun out, and the adjective becomes the whole noun phrase — הקטן is 'the small one', העשירים is 'the rich'. This is Hebrew's answer to English one-support, and because nothing else is left standing, the adjective's gender is the only clue to what it stands for.
  • הבית הגדול: Repeating the ArticleA2Definiteness is an agreement feature in Hebrew, so it is copied onto every adjective in the phrase: three modifiers means three extra ה's. Two things make the rule look broken when it is not — ב, ל and כ swallow the noun's article so only the adjective's is visible, and Hebrew and English simply do not put articles in the same places.
