tsakiyar: In the Middle Of

Hausa tsakiyar identifies the middle or central region of a place, object, period, or unfolding event. It is the linked form of feminine tsakiya “middle”: a tsakiyar gari literally locates something “at the middle of town.” This noun-based structure explains both the attached -r before a noun and forms such as a tsakiyarta “in its middle.”

All unlabelled examples are (neutral Nigerian Standard Hausa). Ordinary boko preserves ɓ, ɗ, ƙ and apostrophes but does not normally mark tone or vowel length.

Feminine tsakiya takes the linker -r

Before the noun that supplies the containing whole, tsakiya takes feminine -r. The result is written as one word: tsakiyar.

FormFunctionExample

tsakiyarlinked to a following nountsakiyar gari “the middle of town”
a tsakiyarlocated in that middlea tsakiyar gari “in the middle of town”

An gina sabon masallaci a tsakiyar unguwar.

A new mosque was built in the middle of the neighbourhood.

Motar ta tsaya a tsakiyar hanya bayan tayarta ta fashe.

The vehicle stopped in the middle of the road after its tyre burst.

Yara sun shimfiɗa tabarma a tsakiyar ɗakin.

The children spread a mat in the middle of the room.

The complement identifies the whole whose central region is meant: neighbourhood, road, or room. Its gender does not control the linker. Feminine tsakiya always supplies -r before the following noun. This is why tsakiyan gari is not the Standard Hausa form even though many relational nouns take -n.

💡
Final -a does not always predict gender in Hausa, but this particular noun is feminine: learn tsakiya → tsakiyar gari as a pair.

The centre contrasts with a side

Tsakiyar selects an internal central region. Gefen selects a side or edge. This contrast is geometrical, not merely a choice between two translations of English at.

Ku ajiye teburin a tsakiyar ɗakin, ba a gefen bango ba.

Put the table in the middle of the room, not beside the wall. (addressing several people)

Masu sayar da abinci suna gefen filin, amma rumfar rajista tana tsakiyarsa.

The food sellers are at the side of the field, but the registration tent is in its middle.

The first instruction forces a choice: a tsakiyar ɗaki is away from the sides, while a gefen bango is a boundary-side location. Simple cikin ɗaki “inside the room” would not answer the same question because anything from the doorway to the centre can be inside.

Akwatin yana cikin ɗakin, amma ba ya tsakiyar ɗakin.

The box is inside the room, but it is not in the middle of the room.

Containment with cikin therefore does not guarantee centrality. Tsakiyar adds that stronger spatial claim.

💡
Ask two separate questions: is it inside the whole (cikin), and is it in the central part (tsakiyar)? The first answer can be yes while the second is no.

Pronominal wholes use possessive suffixes

When the containing whole is already represented by a pronoun, attach the appropriate suffix to tsakiya. Do not put an independent pronoun after tsakiyar.

Some literal combinations with human singular possessors are unusual because people are not normally containers with a relevant central region. The full paradigm nevertheless shows the morphology; everyday discourse especially uses third-person forms for roads, rooms, fields, periods, and events.

Hanyar tana da rami a tsakiyarta.

The road has a pothole in its middle.

Filin yana da babban itace a tsakiyarsa.

The field has a large tree in its middle.

Muna zagaye da kujeru, ga ƙaramin tebur a tsakiyarmu.

We are surrounded by chairs, with a small table in our midst.

The suffix agrees with the reference point: feminine hanya is resumed by -ta, while masculine fili is resumed by -sa. The feminine gender of the head tsakiya is a separate fact, visible in tsakiyar + noun.

Tsakiyar is not tsakanin

English can use in the middle of both for the centre of one domain and for a position between separate landmarks. Hausa normally keeps these relations apart. Tsakiyar X takes one whole as its domain; tsakanin X da Y places something in the interval between two reference points.

An kafa rumfar a tsakiyar kasuwar.

The stall was set up in the middle of the market.

An kafa rumfar tsakanin banki da gidan waya.

The stall was set up between the bank and the post office.

The market in the first sentence contains the central region. The bank and post office in the second mark two sides of an interval. With a group, tsakanin can mean “among,” whereas tsakiyar presents the group or area as a whole possessing a centre. See tsakanin: between and among for those multi-landmark patterns.

Time periods and unfolding events

The central-region image extends productively to time. A tsakiyar marks a point well inside a period, away from its beginning and end.

Za mu yi jarabawa a tsakiyar watan Oktoba.

We will take the examination in the middle of October.

Wutar lantarki ta ɗauke a tsakiyar dare.

The electricity went off in the middle of the night.

It can also locate an interruption or change within an unfolding activity:

Ya bar ɗakin a tsakiyar taron ba tare da bayani ba.

He left the room in the middle of the meeting without an explanation.

A tsakiyar jawabinta, makirfon ya daina aiki.

In the middle of her speech, the microphone stopped working.

These temporal uses are neutral in conversation and careful writing. They retain the same relationship: the month, night, meeting, or speech is treated as a span with a beginning, middle, and end.

Central importance versus physical centre

Do not assume that every English central calls for tsakiyar. The expression is excellent for position within a spatial or temporal whole. Abstract “central to the plan” often needs vocabulary for importance or a major role rather than a literal middle expression.

Wannan batu yana da muhimmanci sosai a cikin shirin.

This issue is very important within the plan.

The sentence avoids forcing spatial tsakiyar to mean English central in the sense “important.” Translate the intended relation, not the nearest dictionary gloss.

Common Mistakes

1. Giving tsakiya the masculine linker

❌ Motar ta tsaya a tsakiyan hanya.

Incorrect — feminine tsakiya takes -r before a noun.

✅ Babbar motar ta tsaya a tsakiyar hanya.

The large vehicle stopped in the middle of the road.

2. Writing the linker separately

❌ Sun kafa tebur a tsakiya r ɗaki.

Incorrect standard spelling — attach the linker to tsakiya.

✅ Sun kafa tebur a tsakiyar ɗaki.

They set up a table in the middle of the room.

3. Using an independent pronoun as the whole

❌ Akwai rami a tsakiyar ta.

Incorrect — the feminine referent is expressed with a suffix.

✅ Akwai rami a tsakiyarta.

There is a hole in its middle. (feminine referent)

4. Using tsakiyar for an interval between two places

❌ Shagon yana tsakiyar banki da asibiti.

Incorrect for the intended two-landmark meaning ‘between.’

✅ Sabon shagon yana tsakanin gidan waya da asibitin.

The new shop is between the post office and the hospital.

5. Inserting da as a separate equivalent of English of

❌ Teburin yana tsakiyar da ɗaki.

Incorrect — the containing whole follows linked tsakiyar directly.

✅ Teburin yana tsakiyar ɗakin.

The table is in the middle of the room.

Key Takeaways

  • Feminine tsakiya becomes tsakiyar before a noun complement.
  • A tsakiyar X selects the central region inside X; cikin X gives containment without centrality.
  • Pronoun forms attach: a tsakiyarsa, a tsakiyarta, a tsakiyarmu.
  • Tsakiyar X uses one containing whole; tsakanin X da Y uses an interval between reference points.
  • The central-region image extends naturally to periods and events: tsakiyar wata, tsakiyar taro.
  • Do not translate abstract English central/important mechanically with tsakiyar.
