Hausa game da introduces the matter that a statement, question, decision, or concern is about. It can also mean “with regard to” or “in respect of,” especially when one aspect of a larger issue is being evaluated. In mun yi magana game da aikin “we talked about the work,” the work is the topic—not a companion, instrument, or location.
Learn game da as a two-word complex expression. Modern speakers do not have to calculate a literal physical geometry each time they use it. Its final da remains grammatically visible, however: personal pronouns are the independent forms game da ni, game da kai, game da ita, and so on. All unlabelled examples are (neutral Nigerian Standard Hausa).
For the independent forms selected by da, see pronouns after da. The nearby topic expression a kan is covered under kan: on, over, and about.
Introducing the topic of speech or writing
With verbs and action nouns of speaking, asking, writing, reporting, or thinking, game da + noun phrase states the subject matter.
Mun yi magana game da matsalar ruwa a unguwarmu.
We talked about the water problem in our neighborhood.
Aisha ta tambayi manajan game da ranar biyan albashi.
Aisha asked the manager about the salary payment date.
Jaridar ta wallafa cikakken rahoto game da ambaliyar ruwa.
The newspaper published a detailed report about the flooding. (neutral journalistic style)
The complement can be a person, object, event, or proposition treated as a discourse topic. Game da Musa therefore means “concerning Musa,” not “together with Musa.”
Na zo da Musa.
I came with Musa. (physical accompaniment)
Na zo game da Musa.
I came concerning Musa / about Musa. (Musa is the reason or topic of the visit)
This minimal pair forces the choice. Bare da coordinates or introduces an accompanier; game da introduces subject matter. English with can itself mean “concerning” in expressions such as a problem with the account, but that does not make bare Hausa da a topic marker.
Pronominal complements after game da
Because the expression ends in prepositional da, it takes independent personal pronouns.
| Topic | Form | Example meaning |
|---|---|---|
| me | game da ni | about me |
| you, one male | game da kai | about you |
| you, one female | game da ke | about you |
| him | game da shi | about him/it |
| her | game da ita | about her/it |
| us / you all / them | game da mu / ku / su | about us / you / them |
Shin sun faɗi wani abu game da ni a taron?
Did they say anything about me at the meeting?
Ina da tambaya game da kai, amma zan yi ta a sirri.
I have a question about you, but I will ask it privately. (addressing one male)
An aika mana da sanarwa game da su jiya.
We were sent a notice concerning them yesterday.
Do not attach a possessive suffix to game and do not substitute dependent object forms after da. The correct contrast is game da ita, not gameta or game da ta. This differs from relational nouns such as cikinta “inside it” and gabanta “in front of her.”
Topic-setting before a whole statement
Game da + noun phrase can stand at the beginning and establish the domain in which the following statement should be understood.
Game da kuɗin haya, mai gidan ya amince mu biya ranar Litinin.
Regarding the rent, the landlord agreed that we could pay on Monday.
Game da taron gobe kuwa, za mu aika da jadawalin da yamma.
As for tomorrow’s meeting, we will send the schedule in the evening.
The particle kuwa can reinforce a switch or contrast in topic. Initial game da... is common in organized speech, correspondence, and (formal) administrative writing, but it is not restricted to formal language. Speakers also use it naturally when returning to a subject in conversation.
“With respect to” isolates an aspect
The complement may name not the entire topic but the dimension under which something is assessed: price, quality, timing, safety, or legal status.
Game da farashi, wannan injin ya fi wancan sauƙi.
With respect to price, this machine is cheaper than that one.
Game da yawan ɗalibai, makarantun biyu kusan daidai suke; amma game da kayan aiki sun bambanta.
With respect to student numbers, the two schools are almost equal, but they differ with respect to equipment. (careful style)
Babu matsala game da ingancin ruwan; abin dubawa shi ne yadda ake rarraba shi.
There is no problem regarding the water’s quality; what needs attention is how it is distributed.
This is the “respect” in the page title: in the respect/dimension of X. It is not social respect or politeness. Hausa girmamawa expresses respect shown to a person; game da merely marks the relevant matter.
A physical scene can still have an abstract topic
Makanikai biyu suna tsaye kusa da famfon, suna magana game da yadda za a gyara shi.
Two mechanics are standing near the pump, talking about how it will be repaired.
Kusa da famfon gives the physical geometry: they are near the pump. Game da yadda za a gyara shi gives an abstract discourse relation: the repair method is their topic. The mechanics can be near one object and talking about another; topic marking does not locate their bodies.
Suna gefen motar suna tattaunawa game da sabon kasafin kuɗi.
They are beside the car discussing the new budget.
This is why translating English about as if it meant “around” is dangerous. Physical wajen motar or kusa da motar and topical game da motar answer different questions.
Game da, a kan, and dangane da
Topic a kan and game da overlap substantially. A kan is frequent after nouns such as muhawara “debate” and rahoto “report,” while game da is especially transparent as a general topic setter.
Sun yi muhawara a kan sabon tsarin har tsawon awa biyu.
They debated the new system for two hours.
Game da sabon tsarin, har yanzu ba a yanke shawara ba.
Regarding the new system, no decision has yet been made.
The pair illustrates a useful tendency, not an absolute prohibition. Both can introduce subject matter, and established collocations matter. Dangane da “in relation to/regarding” is common in (formal) and administrative prose when an explicit relation to a prior document or issue is foregrounded.
Dangane da wasiƙarku ta ranar uku ga watan Mayu, an amince da buƙatar.
With reference to your letter dated May 3, the request has been approved. (formal)
Do not pile the expressions together. One well-chosen topic frame is enough.
Attachment and scope
Place game da beside the expression whose topic it supplies. A long sentence can otherwise make it unclear whether the topic belongs to the question, report, visit, or decision.
Daraktan ya kira taro game da jinkirin aikin.
The director called a meeting about the delay in the work.
Daraktan ya yi magana da ma’aikatan game da jinkirin aikin.
The director spoke with the workers about the delay in the work.
In the second sentence, da ma’aikatan identifies the people spoken with, while game da jinkirin identifies what they discussed. Repeating da in different structures is natural because each phrase has a different role.
Common Mistakes
1. Using bare da for a topic
❌ Mun yi magana da kasafin kuɗi.
Wrong for ‘we talked about the budget’; this gives da an inappropriate accompaniment/comitative reading.
✅ Mun yi magana game da kasafin kuɗi.
We talked about the budget.
2. Using a dependent pronoun after da
❌ Sun tambaye ni game da ta.
Incorrect — topic da takes independent ita.
✅ Sun tambaye ni game da ita.
They asked me about her.
3. Attaching the pronoun as though game were a relational noun
❌ An rubuta rahoto gamensa.
Incorrect in the standard game da construction taught here.
✅ An rubuta rahoto game da shi.
A report was written about him/it.
4. Confusing topic with physical proximity
❌ Suna tsaye game da motar.
Incorrect for the intended physical meaning ‘they are standing near the car.’
✅ Suna tsaye kusa da motar.
They are standing near the car.
5. Misreading respect as social deference
❌ Yaron ya nuna wa kakarsa game da ita.
Incorrect for ‘the boy showed his grandmother respect.’
✅ Yaron ya nuna wa kakarsa girmamawa.
The boy showed his grandmother respect.
