Hausa has no single plural ending equivalent to English -s. A learner who discovers malami → malamai may be tempted to make birnai from birni or gidaai from gida. The standard plurals are birane and gidaje. Recurring patterns help organize the vocabulary, but they do not license one ending on every noun.
This is a lexical problem with a grammatical consequence. You must first retrieve the noun’s attested plural; only then can you use plural agreement, demonstratives, definiteness, and linking. The overall system is taught on Why Hausa Plurals Must Be Learned Lexically. This page gives a repair routine for the English transfer error of generating every plural by one productive suffix.
All unlabelled forms are (neutral Nigerian Standard Hausa). Ordinary boko does not mark tone or vowel length, even though both can help distinguish plural classes in speech.
Why the one-ending strategy fails
English count nouns overwhelmingly add -s/-es, with a limited set of familiar irregulars. Hausa distributes common nouns across many plural patterns, often changing the end of the stem, an internal vowel, a consonant, or more than one part at once.
| Singular | Plural | Meaning | Visible pattern |
|---|---|---|---|
| malami | malamai | teacher(s) | -ai |
| suna | sunaye | name(s) | -aye |
| mota | motoci | car(s) | -oci |
| riga | riguna | gown(s) | -una |
| kujera | kujeru | chair(s) | -u |
| gida | gidaje | house(s) | -aje |
| littafi | littattafai | book(s) | reduplication plus -ai |
| mace | mata | woman/women | stem replacement |
Sabon malami ya isa, amma sauran malamai suna cikin aji.
The new teacher arrived, but the other teachers are in the classroom.
An rubuta suna ɗaya sau biyu, don haka na gyara jerin sunayen.
One name was written twice, so I corrected the list of names.
Motoci biyar ne suka tsaya a gaban gidajen gwamnati.
Five cars stopped in front of the government houses.
Riguna biyu sun rage a wurin tela, amma an riga an ɗauki kujerun.
Two gowns remain at the tailor’s, but the chairs have already been taken away.
The plural ending cannot be chosen from English meaning, singular gender, or the last written vowel alone. Both gida and mota end in -a, but they form gidaje and motoci. Both malami and littafi end in -i, but only the former has the straightforward-looking malamai.
Spelling does not expose the whole class system
Hausa plural formation is sensitive to phonological information that ordinary boko leaves unmarked, including tone and vowel length. A spelling-only rule therefore starts with incomplete evidence. Historical form and lexicalization also matter. Two singulars that look similar can belong to different patterns, while a plural may remodel the stem.
Muna aiki a birane uku, kuma ofisoshinmu suna kusa da kasuwanni.
We work in three cities, and our offices are near markets.
Yara sun mayar da littattafai goma zuwa ɗakin karatu.
The children returned ten books to the library.
An rufe ƙofofin, amma tagogin bene na sama suna buɗe.
The doors were closed, but the upstairs windows are open.
The correct response to uncertainty is lexical verification, not choosing the ending that feels most productive. A reliable dictionary entry and educated speaker provide both the written plural and its pronunciation. There is no honest rule that predicts every plural from an unmarked singular spelling.
Some nouns really do have more than one plural
Multiple attested plurals do not make every ending free. Jaki “donkey” has jakai and jakuna; hannu “hand” has hannaye and hannuwa. These alternatives are stored lexical forms. Their relative frequency can vary by region, register, collocation, or intended sense.
Jakai sun isa kasuwa kafin jakunan da suka fito daga ƙauyen.
The donkeys arrived at the market before the donkeys that came from the village.
Likitan ya duba hannayenta, sannan ya ce ta riƙa wanke hannuwanta sosai.
The doctor examined her hands and then told her to keep washing her hands thoroughly.
Do not label an established alternative “ungrammatical” merely because it differs from the first dictionary form you learned. Conversely, do not invent an alternative and call it (regional) without evidence. The page on multiple plurals and usage differences explains how to record real variants.
Once the plural is known, agreement is regular
Singular Hausa distinguishes masculine and feminine agreement. Plural agreement uses one plural series, regardless of the singular noun’s gender. This is neutralization, not a claim that all plurals are masculine.
Waccan mota ta tsaya, amma waɗancan motoci sun wuce.
That car stopped, but those cars passed by.
Wancan gida ya lalace, amma waɗannan gidaje suna da ƙarfi.
That house deteriorated, but these houses are solid.
Waɗannan makarantu ne aka gyara a bana.
These are the schools that were renovated this year.
Once mota → motoci has been retrieved, the grammar is predictable: waɗannan motoci, motoci sun..., motoci ne, and object pronoun su. Keeping feminine singular ta/ce after a plural is a second error, even if the plural stem itself is correct.
Definite and linked plurals are another step
The plural -n series marks a known plural referent or links that plural to a following dependent. Boundary adjustments mean that this is not always a matter of preserving every letter and appending n.
| Singular | Plural | Definite/linked plural | Natural phrase |
|---|---|---|---|
| malami | malamai | malaman | malaman jami’a “university lecturers” |
| littafi | littattafai | littattafan | littattafan tarihi “history books” |
| mota | motoci | motocin | motocin haya “taxis” |
| gida | gidaje | gidajen | gidajen ma’aikata “staff houses” |
Malaman jami’ar sun gabatar da sakamakon binciken.
The university lecturers presented the research findings.
Motocin haya ba sa zuwa tashar jirgin ƙasa da dare.
Taxis do not go to the railway station at night.
Malamai + -n surfaces as malaman, not malamain. The first step is still retrieving the lexical plural malamai; the second is deriving its established linked form.
A four-part repair procedure
When you catch yourself attaching a favorite ending, stop and rebuild the noun entry:
- Record the citation singular and its gender.
- Retrieve the attested plural or plurals from a reliable source.
- Record the singular and plural definite/linked forms.
- Put the chosen number into agreement across the full noun phrase and clause.
For example: mota (f.), motoci, motar, motocin. This one card supports wata mota ta tsaya, motoci sun tsaya, motar Amina, and motocin kamfani.
Wata mota ta kawo baƙin, sannan motocin kamfanin suka koma ofis.
A car brought the visitors, and then the company cars returned to the office.
A meaning-changing near miss
Closely related linked forms can differ in number, not merely pronunciation.
Malamin makarantar ya kira ni da safe.
The school’s teacher called me in the morning. (one teacher)
Malaman makarantar sun kira ni da safe.
The school’s teachers called me in the morning. (more than one teacher)
Malamin comes from singular malami; malaman comes from plural malamai. Replacing one with the other changes who called and also requires ya → sun. Learn the full agreement chain, not just a noun ending.
Self-correction in conversation
—Sabbin birnai nawa kuka ziyarta? —Birnai... a’a, birane huɗu muka ziyarta, sannan muka ga ƙauyuka biyu. —Wane birni kuka fi so? —Mun fi son Zariya.
—How many new cities did you visit? —Cities... no, we visited four cities, and then we saw two villages. —Which city did you like most? —We liked Zaria most.
The speaker rejects the improvised birnai and retrieves lexical birane. The correction does not establish -ane as a new universal suffix.
Common Mistakes
1. Applying -ai to every noun ending in -i
❌ Mun buɗe ofisoshi a birnai biyu.
Incorrect—the standard plural of birni is not formed with -ai.
✅ Mun buɗe ofisoshi a birane biyu.
We opened offices in two cities.
2. Applying -una to every feminine -a noun
❌ Motauna uku sun isa tashar.
Incorrect—mota has the lexical plural motoci.
✅ Motoci uku sun isa tashar.
Three cars arrived at the station.
3. Copying English -s into Hausa
❌ Littafis ɗin nan sun yi tsada.
Incorrect—English -s is not a Hausa plural marker.
✅ Littattafan nan sun yi tsada.
These books were expensive.
4. Preserving feminine singular agreement after pluralization
❌ Waɗannan ƙofofi ce, kuma ta kulle.
Incorrect—plural ƙofofi requires plural agreement, not ce and ta.
✅ Waɗannan ƙofofi ne, kuma sun kulle.
These are doors, and they are locked.
5. Building a linked plural from the singular stem
❌ Gidan ma’aikatan suna kusa da asibiti.
Incorrect for ‘the staff houses’—gidan is singular.
✅ Gidajen ma’aikatan suna kusa da asibiti.
The staff houses are near the hospital.
6. Calling an invented form a regional variant
❌ Kujeraoci biyu sun isa zauren.
Incorrect—the invented form kujeraoci is not an attested plural of kujera.
✅ Kujeru biyu sun isa zauren.
Two chairs arrived at the hall.
Key Takeaways
- Hausa has many plural patterns but no universal plural ending.
- Learn each noun’s singular, gender, attested plural or plurals, and linked forms as one lexical entry.
- Tone, vowel length, lexical history, and stem changes make spelling-only prediction unreliable.
- Genuine alternative plurals may differ by frequency, region, register, collocation, or meaning; invented forms are not automatically regional.
- After retrieving the correct plural, use the common plural agreement series: sun/suna, ne, waɗannan/waɗancan, -n.
