Prefixes

Greek prefixes can signal repetition, position, excess, opposition, movement, or participation. Some are lively in everyday verbs—ξανα-, for example—while others are especially productive in technical and formal vocabulary. Familiarity with English forms such as anti-, hyper-, and meta- helps with recognition, but it does not guarantee the meaning of a Greek word.

A prefixed word is a lexical unit written without a space or hyphen. Its stress, aspectual partner, and exact sense belong to the whole word.

Everyday ξανα- and completive/intensive ξε-

Ξανα- transparently means “again” or “anew” and attaches very freely to verbs. It does not choose the verb’s aspect: ξαναδιαβάζω can present rereading as open or in progress, while ξαναδιαβάσω presents a bounded rereading.

Ξαναδιάβασε το μήνυμα πριν απαντήσεις θυμωμένος.

ksanadhiávase to mínima prin apandísis thimoménos

Read the message again before replying angrily.

Θα ξανασυζητήσουμε το θέμα όταν θα έχουμε όλα τα στοιχεία.

tha ksanasizitísume to théma ótan tha échume óla ta stichía

We'll discuss the issue again when we have all the evidence.

Ξε- has several histories and meanings. This page owns its intensive or completive side: ξεκουράζομαι “rest and recover,” ξεπερνάω “get past / surpass,” and ξεψαχνίζω “examine minutely.” No single English particle covers all three; the prefix often suggests carrying an action through or beyond a limit.

Κάθισε λίγο να ξεκουραστείς πριν συνεχίσουμε τον δρόμο.

káthise lígho na ksekurastís prin sinechísume ton dhrómo

Sit down and rest a little before we continue the journey.

Η ομάδα ξεπέρασε γρήγορα την απογοήτευση της ήττας.

i omádha ksepérase ghríghora tin apoghoítefsi tis ítas

The team quickly got over the disappointment of the defeat.

Η επιτροπή ξεψάχνισε κάθε λεπτομέρεια της σύμβασης.

i epitropí ksepsáchnise káthe leptoméria tis símvasis

The committee scrutinized every detail of the contract.

Reversative ξε-, as in “unlock/unfasten,” belongs to privative and negative formation. Keeping the two uses separate prevents the false idea that ξεπερνάω simply “undoes” περνάω.

💡
Prefix meaning is a family resemblance, not an equation. Use ξανα- productively for “again”; learn many ξε- verbs as whole lexical items.

Opposition and time: αντι-, προ-, μετα-

Αντι- often signals opposition, response, exchange, or a counterpart: αντιπρόταση “counterproposal,” αντίδραση “reaction.” Yet αντιπρόεδρος means “vice-president,” not someone opposed to a president—a clear case of lexicalization.

Καταθέσαμε αντιπρόταση με χαμηλότερο κόστος και μεγαλύτερη διάρκεια.

katathésame andiprótasi me chamilótero kóstos ke meghalíteri dhiárkia

We submitted a counterproposal with a lower cost and a longer duration.

Η αντιπρόεδρος θα διευθύνει τη συνεδρίαση σήμερα.

i andipróedhros tha dhiefthíni ti sinedhríasi símera

The vice-president will chair the meeting today.

Προ- places something before in time, order, or planning: προπληρώνω “prepay,” προετοιμάζω “prepare.” Μετα- can signal what comes after, a transfer, or a change of form: μεταπολεμικός “post-war,” μεταγράφω “transcribe / transfer-register.”

Αν προπληρώσετε το δωμάτιο, η τιμή είναι χαμηλότερη.

an proplirósete to dhomátio, i timí íne chamilóteri

If you prepay for the room, the price is lower.

Το βιβλίο εξετάζει τη μεταπολεμική ιστορία της πόλης.

to vivlío eksetázi ti metapolemikí istoría tis pólis

The book examines the city's post-war history. (academic)

These meanings overlap but are not interchangeable with English cognates. Μεταγραφή may mean transcription, transliteration, or a player transfer depending on the field.

Vertical scale: υπο- and υπερ-

Υπο- contributes “under-, sub-, below the expected level,” while υπερ- contributes “over-, excessive, super-.” They are common in formal classification and technical vocabulary, but verbs such as υποτιμώ “underestimate” and υπερφορτώνω “overload” are broadly usable.

Μην υποτιμάς τον χρόνο που χρειάζεται αυτή η επισκευή.

min ipotimás ton chróno pu chriázete aftí i episkeví

Don't underestimate the time this repair needs.

Το φορτηγό υπερφορτώθηκε και δεν επιτρεπόταν να φύγει.

to fortighó iperfortóthike ke dhen epitrepótan na fíyi

The lorry was overloaded and was not allowed to leave.

Η λέξη ανήκει σε μια μικρότερη υποκατηγορία.

i léksi aníki se mia mikróteri ipokatighoría

The word belongs to a smaller subcategory. (academic)

Not every υπο- word is transparently “under”: υπογράφω now simply means “sign.” Historical structure can help memory without predicting current usage.

Together: συν- and its allomorphs

The learned prefix συν- broadly signals togetherness, combination, or participation. Its shape adjusts to the following sound. Common written allomorphs include συμ- before labial consonants, συγ- before velars, and assimilation to a following liquid in words such as συλλέγω. Learners should recognize the family without trying to rebuild every historical sound change during conversation.

ShapeExampleBroad contribution
συν-συνεργάζομαιwork together
συμ-συμπληρώνωfill out / complete
συγ-συγκρίνωcompare
συλ-συλλέγωcollect

Οι δύο οργανώσεις συνεργάζονται για την προστασία του δάσους.

i dhío orghanósis sinergházonde ya tin prostasía tu dhásus

The two organizations are working together to protect the forest.

Συμπληρώστε όλα τα πεδία πριν στείλετε την αίτηση.

simpliróste óla ta pedhía prin stílete tin étisi

Fill in all the fields before sending the application. (formal instruction)

Η έρευνα συγκρίνει τις τιμές σε πέντε διαφορετικές χώρες.

i érevna singríni tis timés se pénde dhiaforetikés chóres

The study compares prices in five different countries. (academic)

In several everyday words the original compositional meaning has faded. “Together” is a clue to the family, not a full translation of συμπληρώνω.

Paths and movement: δια-, απο-, εν-, εκ-/εξ-

Δια- can suggest movement through or across, distribution, or separation. Απο- often suggests movement away, removal, or separation. Their descendants range from transparent to highly lexicalized.

Το μονοπάτι διασχίζει το δάσος και καταλήγει στη λίμνη.

to monopáti dhiaschízi to dhásos ke katalíyi sti límni

The path crosses the forest and ends at the lake.

Ο οργανισμός διανέμει τρόφιμα σε οικογένειες της περιοχής.

o orghanizmós dhianémi trófima se ikoyénies tis periochís

The organization distributes food to families in the area.

Αποσύνδεσε τον φορτιστή μόλις γεμίσει η μπαταρία.

aposíndhese ton fortistí mólis yemísi i bataría

Disconnect the charger as soon as the battery is full.

Εν- broadly points inward or into; it also assimilates in learned formations. Ενσωματώνω “incorporate” remains visibly connected to σώμα “body.” Εκ- occurs before consonants and εξ- commonly before vowels in the same “out/from” family: εκδίδω, εξάγω.

Η νέα ενότητα ενσωματώθηκε στο τελικό σχέδιο.

i néa enótita ensomatóthike sto telikó schédhio

The new section was incorporated into the final plan. (formal)

Ο εκδοτικός οίκος εκδίδει κυρίως παιδικά βιβλία.

o ekdhotikós íkos ekdhídhi kiríos pedhiká vivlía

The publishing house mainly publishes children's books.

Η εταιρεία εξάγει ελαιόλαδο σε δώδεκα χώρες.

i etería eksáyi eleóladho se dhódheka chóres

The company exports olive oil to twelve countries.

Privative α-/αν-: recognition and scope

Α-/αν- forms word-level negatives such as άγνωστος “unknown” and ανήσυχος “uneasy.” The αν- form occurs before a vowel in many established words. Stress and the relation to the positive base are not always mechanical.

Ο αποστολέας του μηνύματος παραμένει άγνωστος.

o apostoléas tu minímatos paraméni ághnostos

The sender of the message remains unknown.

Οι γονείς έμειναν ανήσυχοι ώσπου γύρισε το παιδί.

i ghonís éminan anísichi óspu yírise to pedhí

The parents remained anxious until the child returned.

The full privative system, including δυσ-, formal μη-, reversative ξε-, and the ban on attaching α- to an ordinary finite verb, belongs to privative and negative formation.

Prefixes are not free prepositions

Several learned prefixes resemble independent prepositions, but a prefix is fused inside a word and does not assign case to a following noun. Compare the prefixed noun αντιπρόταση with independent εναντίον/υπέρ + genitive. The latter system belongs on genitive after prepositions.

Η αντιπρόταση απαντά στις βασικές ενστάσεις των κατοίκων.

i andiprótasi apandá stis vasikés enstásis ton katíkon

The counterproposal answers the residents' main objections.

Common Mistakes

Writing prefixes as separate words

Greek normally writes the derived lexical word solid.

✅ Θα ξαναελέγξω τα ποσά πριν στείλω το τιμολόγιο.

tha ksanaeléngkso ta posá prin stílo to timolóyio

I'll check the amounts again before sending the invoice.

Reading every prefix literally

Historical pieces may survive after the whole word has specialized.

✅ Ο αντιπρόεδρος δεν αντιτίθεται αναγκαστικά στον πρόεδρο.

o andipróedhros dhen anditíthete anangastiká ston próedhro

The vice-president is not necessarily opposed to the president.

Ignoring allomorphy

Recognize συν-, συμ-, συγ-, συλ- as members of one historical family, then learn each word's spelling.

✅ Συλλέγουμε στοιχεία και συγκρίνουμε τις διαφορετικές εκδοχές.

siléghume stichía ke singrínume tis dhiaforetikés ekdhochés

We collect evidence and compare the different accounts.

Using α- as sentence negation

Word-level privation and finite-verb negation are different systems.

✅ Δεν γράφω ακόμη την αναφορά· συλλέγω δεδομένα.

dhen ghráfo akómi tin anaforá; silégho dhedhoména

I'm not writing the report yet; I'm collecting data.

Key Takeaways

  • Everyday ξανα- means “again”; intensive/completive ξε- is lexical, while reversative ξε- belongs to negative derivation.
  • Learned αντι-, προ-, υπο-, υπερ-, μετα-, δια-, απο-, εν-, εκ-/εξ- provide powerful decoding clues but not guaranteed definitions.
  • Συν- appears in assimilated shapes such as συμ-, συγ-, συλ-.
  • Privative α-/αν- is introduced here for recognition; its full grammar belongs to the dedicated negative-derivation page.
  • A prefix is fused inside one word; unlike an independent preposition, it does not govern the case of a separate noun.
