Greek forecasts combine everyday weather constructions—θα βρέξει, θα κάνει κρύο, θα έχει συννεφιά—with a semi-formal broadcast vocabulary such as θα πνέουν, θα εκδηλωθούν, and θα εξασθενήσουν. The result is denser than casual small talk but still built from ordinary future grammar.
Rights note: the forecast below is wholly original and does not describe a real date or reproduce a published bulletin. Its phraseology was checked against current forecast conventions of the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY), especially the standard ordering of conditions, winds, and temperature.

From the evening onward, the weather phenomena will weaken and conditions will improve.
The sequence is conventional: conditions, regional detail, wind, temperature, then later development. Real bulletins may use verbless labels; this learner text keeps complete sentences.
No dummy “it” with weather verbs
Θα βρέξει and θα χιονίζει are complete clauses with no dummy equivalent of English it. Θα φυσάει is likewise finite φυσάω “blow,” though English says “it will be windy.”
Το απόγευμα θα βρέχει στα παράλια, ενώ στα ορεινά θα χιονίζει.
to apóyevma tha vréchi sta parália, enó sta oriná tha chionízi.
In the afternoon it will be raining on the coast, while it will be snowing in the mountains.
Ο καιρός can be the real subject of θα βελτιωθεί, but not a dummy subject of βρέχει. See impersonal weather verbs.
Three construction families
The report uses three different grammatical shapes:
- a weather verb alone: θα βρέξει, θα χιονίζει, θα φυσάει;
- impersonal κάνει + weather noun/adjective-like complement: θα κάνει κρύο;
- impersonal έχει + noun: θα έχει συννεφιά.
English funnels all three through it will be…. Greek preserves the lexical construction: κρύο is a fixed weather complement; συννεφιά is a noun.
Αύριο θα κάνει ζέστη, αλλά το πρωί θα έχει ομίχλη.
ávrio tha káni zésti, alá to proí tha échi omíchli.
Tomorrow it will be hot, but there will be fog in the morning.

Future viewpoint: θα βρέξει and θα βρέχει
Perfective θα βρέξει packages a forecast phase as bounded; imperfective θα βρέχει places the listener inside a rainy interval. Neither mechanically means “once” or “repeatedly.”
Thus θα βρέξει κατά διαστήματα can package several rainy spells, while θα χιονίζει από νωρίς opens an internal morning view.
Μέχρι το μεσημέρι θα βρέχει, αλλά αργότερα η βροχή θα σταματήσει.
méchri to mesiméri tha vréchi, alá arghótera i vrochí tha stamatísi.
It will be raining until noon, but later the rain will stop.
This open future is explained fully on the continuous future.
Wind direction and force
Forecasts use formal οι άνεμοι θα πνέουν. Από βόρειες διευθύνσεις gives the origin; Beaufort force appears as 4 με 6 μποφόρ, with τοπικά 7 for a local maximum.
Everyday conversation is simpler:
Αύριο στο νησί θα φυσάει δυνατός βοριάς.
ávrio sto nisí tha fisái dhinatós voriás.
Tomorrow a strong north wind will be blowing on the island. (everyday)
The first form is (semi-formal); the second is everyday.
Temperature language
Η θερμοκρασία θα κυμανθεί από Χ έως Ψ βαθμούς gives a range; θα πέσει στους 4 βαθμούς a target level. The plural complement is accusative βαθμούς, even when the written numeral does not visibly change.
Semi-formal forecast vocabulary
The everyday core sits beside more institutional verbs:
- θα εκδηλωθούν καταιγίδες “thunderstorms will develop/occur” (semi-formal);
- τα φαινόμενα θα εξασθενήσουν “the phenomena will weaken” (formal/semi-formal);
- ο καιρός θα βελτιωθεί “conditions will improve” (neutral broadcast).
Casual alternatives include Θα πιάσει καταιγίδα and Μετά θα καλυτερέψει ο καιρός.
Common Mistakes
Adding a dummy subject to βρέχει. Use the impersonal verb alone; use ο καιρός only where it has its own predicate.
Αύριο θα βρέξει στα δυτικά και ο καιρός θα ανοίξει το βράδυ.
ávrio tha vréksi sta dhitiká ke o kerós tha aníksi to vrádhi.
Tomorrow it will rain in the west, and the weather will clear in the evening.
Translating every English “will be” with θα είναι. Weather collocations choose κάνει, έχει, or a weather verb.
Στα πεδινά θα κάνει ζέστη και στα ορεινά θα έχει ομίχλη.
sta pedhiná tha káni zésti ke sta oriná tha échi omíchli.
It will be hot in the lowlands, and there will be fog in the mountains.
Confusing the direction with the destination. Από βόρειες διευθύνσεις means the air comes from the north; it is not moving “toward the north.”
Οι άνεμοι θα έρχονται από τα βόρεια και θα κατευθύνονται προς τα νότια.
i ánemi tha érchonde apó ta vória ke tha katefthínonde pros ta nótia.
The winds will come from the north and move toward the south.
Key Takeaways
- Greek weather verbs need no dummy equivalent of English it.
- Learn the three families: weather verb, κάνει + weather complement, and έχει + noun.
- Θα βρέξει gives a bounded forecast view; θα βρέχει opens an internal interval.
- Bulletin language favors θα πνέουν, direction από…, Beaufort force, and temperature ranges.
- Semi-formal forecast phrasing is denser than conversation, but it uses the same core future system.
