Tense and Deixis in Reported Speech

Greek does not mechanically turn every present into a past after είπε “said.” Embedded tense describes the reported situation: present for a current or retained viewpoint, past for past time, and θα for a projected or inferred event. Do not backshift by reflex.

No automatic sequence of tenses

English often changes I am ill into he said he was ill. Greek may retain the present after a past reporting verb because είπε and the reported proposition have separate time reference.

Ο Πέτρος είπε: «Είμαι άρρωστος».

o Pétros ípe: «íme árostos»

Petros said, ‘I am ill.’

Ο Πέτρος είπε ότι είναι άρρωστος.

o Pétros ípe óti íne árostos

Petros said that he is ill / was ill.

Present είναι makes the illness current, relevant, or retained from Petros’s viewpoint. English may translate it with was through its own backshift; Greek does not thereby require ήταν.

Μας εξήγησαν ότι το μουσείο κλείνει νωρίτερα τον χειμώνα.

mas eksíyisan óti to musío klíni norítera ton chimóna

They explained that the museum closes earlier in winter.

This reports a general schedule, so backshifting κλείνει would wrongly turn a standing fact into a past arrangement.

💡
A past reporting verb supplies the time of speaking, not the tense of the reported proposition. Ask “When is this situation true?” before choosing the embedded Greek verb.

Present stays present, past stays past, θα stays θα

Greek commonly preserves the time-aspect choice of the original utterance, with person adjusted to the new report.

Η Δήμητρα είπε: «Έχασα το λεωφορείο».

i Dhímitra ípe: «échasa to leoforío»

Dimitra said, ‘I missed the bus.’

Η Δήμητρα είπε ότι έχασε το λεωφορείο.

i Dhímitra ípe óti échase to leoforío

Dimitra said that she had missed the bus.

The aorist remains because the missed bus is completed. English often marks anteriority with had missed; Greek need not replace έχασε with είχε χάσει when the order is clear.

Ο Άρης είπε: «Θα τελειώσω μέχρι τις έξι».

o Áris ípe: «tha telióso méchri tis éksi»

Aris said, ‘I’ll finish by six.’

Ο Άρης είπε ότι θα τελειώσει μέχρι τις έξι.

o Áris ípe óti tha teliósi méchri tis éksi

Aris said that he would finish by six.

Greek retains θα and changes only first-person τελειώσω to third-person τελειώσει. English converts will to would; the translation therefore looks backshifted even though the Greek future construction remains structurally intact.

A past tense is chosen when the meaning is past

Retaining the present is not obligatory. Use the imperfect or another past form when the state belongs to an earlier interval, has ended, or is deliberately viewed from the later reporter’s position.

Ο Πέτρος είπε ότι ήταν άρρωστος εκείνη τη μέρα, αλλά επέστρεψε στη δουλειά την επομένη.

o Pétros ípe óti ítan árostos ekíni ti méra, alá epéstrepse sti dhuliá tin epoméni

Petros said that he was ill that day, but he returned to work the next day.

Η Σοφία είπε ότι δούλευε τότε σε μια μικρή εταιρεία.

i Sofía ípe óti dhúleve tóte se mia mikrí etería

Sofia said that at that time she worked for a small company.

The adverbs εκείνη τη μέρα and τότε establish a closed past frame, so ήταν and δούλευε are meaningful choices, not agreement with the past reporting verb.

A projected event can likewise be viewed from a past reference point with θα + imperfect, often translated by English would.

Μου είπε ότι θα ερχόταν την επόμενη μέρα, αλλά τελικά ακύρωσε το ταξίδι.

mu ípe óti tha erchótan tin epómeni méra, alá teliká akírose to taksídhi

She told me that she would come the next day, but in the end she cancelled the trip.

This θα ερχόταν is selected because the reporter now views the planned arrival as future from a past point. It is not a mandatory replacement for every direct θα έρθω.

Deixis: whose “here” and whose “now”?

Deictic expressions point from a speaker’s coordinates. A report may preserve those coordinates or recalculate them. The following are common adjustments, never blind substitutions:

Original expressionPossible reported expressionUse when...
τώρα “now”τότε “then”the original “now” is past
σήμερα “today”εκείνη τη μέρα “that day”the report is made on another day
αύριο “tomorrow”την επόμενη μέρα “the next day”the original tomorrow is no longer tomorrow
εδώ “here”εκεί “there”the reporter is elsewhere
αυτός “this/he”εκείνος “that/he”distance or contrast is relevant

Η Ιωάννα είπε το πρωί: «Θα μείνω εδώ σήμερα».

i Ioána ípe to proí: «tha míno edhó símera»

Ioanna said in the morning, ‘I’ll stay here today.’

Το ίδιο βράδυ, στο ίδιο σπίτι, είπα ότι η Ιωάννα θα μείνει εδώ σήμερα.

to ídhio vrádhi, sto ídhio spíti, ípa óti i Ioána tha míni edhó símera

That same evening, in the same house, I said that Ioanna would stay here today.

Μια εβδομάδα αργότερα, είπα ότι η Ιωάννα είχε μείνει εκεί εκείνη τη μέρα.

mia evdhomádha arghótera, ípa óti i Ioána íche míni ekí ekíni ti méra

A week later, I said that Ioanna had stayed there that day.

The first report preserves εδώ/σήμερα because place and day have not changed. The later report recalculates both and uses a past perfect because the stay is now anterior. See αυτός versus εκείνος for demonstrative distance and discourse contrast.

💡
Greek deixis is reality-based. Preserving εδώ or σήμερα is correct when the reporter shares the original coordinates; changing them is correct when those coordinates have moved.

Common Mistakes

1. Mixing the original first-person viewpoint with third-person agreement. Person adjustment must reach the verb and reflexive possessive together.

❌ Ο Νίκος είπε ότι εγώ δουλεύει μόνος μου.

Incorrect — first-person εγώ and μόνος μου cannot combine with third-person δουλεύει.

✅ Ο Νίκος είπε ότι εκείνος δουλεύει μόνος του.

o Níkos ípe óti ekínos dhulévi mónos tu

Nikos said that he works alone.

2. Failing to inflect a shifted time expression.

❌ Η Μαρία είπε ότι θα έρθει την επόμενος μέρα.

Incorrect — feminine accusative την…μέρα requires επόμενη.

✅ Η Μαρία είπε ότι θα έρθει την επόμενη μέρα.

i María ípe óti tha érthi tin epómeni méra

Maria said that she would come the next day.

3. Changing the demonstrative but not verbal agreement.

❌ Η Μαρία είπε ότι εκείνη δουλεύουν μόνη της.

Incorrect — singular εκείνη and μόνη της require singular δουλεύει.

✅ Η Μαρία είπε ότι εκείνη δουλεύει μόνη της σήμερα.

i María ípe óti ekíni dhulévi móni tis símera

Maria said that she is working alone today.

Key Takeaways

  • Greek has no automatic sequence-of-tenses backshift after είπε.
  • Retain present, past, or θα when it expresses the intended time viewpoint.
  • Recalculate deixis when circumstances change, while keeping person and agreement grammatical.
