A paragraph is more than several correct sentences on the same topic. Its reader must know whether each new sentence adds a point, changes direction, gives a reason, draws a consequence, or advances a sequence. Greek connectors make those relationships visible, but good writing uses them selectively: enough to guide the reader, not so many that every sentence announces itself.
The inventory and register of individual forms belong to text connectors and the function-specific discourse pages. This page focuses on what connectors do inside a written paragraph, how punctuation frames them, and how to avoid the mechanical rhythm of learner prose.
The same paragraph without guidance
The following seven-sentence paragraph is grammatical. Its weakness is organizational: the reader has to infer every relationship unaided.
i dhimotikí vivliothíki íche eláchistus episképtes ta apoyévmata. i dhiéfthinsi orghánose mia léschi anághnosis. stin próti sinándisi írthan móno éksi átoma. i sizitísis ítan zoirés. i simetéchondes árchisan na férnun fílus. i éthusa yémise mésa se énan mína. o dhímos apofásise na chrimatodhotísi ke dhéfteri omádha
The municipal library had very few visitors in the afternoons. Management organized a reading club. Only six people came to the first meeting. The discussions were lively. Participants began bringing friends. The room filled within a month. The municipality decided to fund a second group as well.
The facts form a chain, yet the text does not explicitly mark cause, contrast, development, or outcome. Short sentences are not wrong, and a brisk narrative may deliberately use them. In an informative paragraph, however, a few well-placed signals reduce the reader's work.
Add only the relations the reader needs
Now the same information has a visible route through it:
i dhimotikí vivliothíki íche eláchistus episképtes ta apoyévmata. yaftó, i dhiéfthinsi orghánose mia léschi anághnosis. archiká, stin próti sinándisi írthan móno éksi átoma. ostóso, i sizitísis ítan zoirés. sti sinéchia, i simetéchondes árchisan na férnun fílus. étsi, i éthusa yémise mésa se énan mína. teliká, o dhímos apofásise na chrimatodhotísi ke dhéfteri omádha
The municipal library had very few visitors in the afternoons. For that reason, management organized a reading club. Initially, only six people came to the first meeting. However, the discussions were lively. Next, participants began bringing friends. As a result, the room filled within a month. In the end, the municipality decided to fund a second group.
Each marker buys something specific:
- Γι' αυτό turns the second sentence into a response to the problem in the first.
- Αρχικά establishes the starting stage rather than presenting “six people” as an isolated fact.
- Ωστόσο tells the reader that the low attendance did not prevent a positive meeting.
- Στη συνέχεια advances the account to the next development.
- Έτσι presents the full room as the consequence of people bringing friends.
- Τελικά closes the development with the municipality's decision.
The paragraph still has seven sentences. Cohesion does not require turning everything into one syntactic chain; it requires making the important relations recoverable.
There is no formula for the correct number of connectors. Read the paragraph as a set of relations: mark the turns a reader could otherwise misread, and let topic continuity carry the rest.
Punctuation at clause boundaries
Neutral και closely joins two words or clauses and normally has no comma before it. Adversative αλλά introduces a clearer boundary and normally follows a comma when it joins two full clauses.
Η Μαρίνα ετοίμασε τους πίνακες και ο Στέφανος έλεγξε τα στοιχεία.
i Marína etímase tus pínakes ke o Stéfanos élenkse ta stichía
Marina prepared the charts and Stefanos checked the figures.
Θέλαμε να στείλουμε την αναφορά σήμερα, αλλά λείπει ακόμη μία υπογραφή.
thélame na stílume tin anaforá símera, alá lípi akómi mía ipoghrafí
We wanted to send the report today, but one signature is still missing.
A detachable connector at the beginning of a sentence is commonly followed by a comma in edited prose (formal). The comma marks it as an instruction about how the whole sentence relates to what came before.
Ωστόσο, η τελική απόφαση ανήκει στο συμβούλιο.
ostóso, i telikí apófasi aníki sto simvúlio
However, the final decision belongs to the council. (formal writing)
Some mobile markers can sit inside the clause without being isolated by commas:
Η τελική απόφαση όμως ανήκει στο συμβούλιο.
i telikí apófasi ómos aníki sto simvúlio
The final decision, however, belongs to the council.
This punctuation is not copied mechanically from English. English often surrounds medial “however” with two commas; Greek medial όμως commonly integrates more tightly. The coordinating conjunctions page covers the syntax of the individual clause joiners.
Two patterns that make a paragraph sound translated
The first is stacking two markers that do the same job. The result may be grammatical, but it repeats the instruction instead of strengthening the argument.
Η λύση κόστιζε περισσότερο. Ωστόσο, ήταν η μόνη που μπορούσε να εφαρμοστεί αμέσως.
i lísi kóstize perisótero. ostóso, ítan i móni pu borúse na efarmostí amésos
The solution cost more. However, it was the only one that could be implemented immediately.
Adding another adversative beside ωστόσο would not create a second contrast. Choose one marker whose register fits the paragraph.
The second is opening every sentence with a connector. This produces a list-like beat even when the relationships differ. Let some sentences connect through repeated topic, pronouns, or a subordinate clause instead:
Αρχικά, εξετάσαμε τρεις χώρους. Ο μικρότερος ήταν οικονομικός, αλλά δεν είχε φυσικό φως. Ο δεύτερος χρειαζόταν μεγάλες επισκευές. Τελικά, επιλέξαμε τον τρίτο.
archiká, eksetásame tris chórus. o mikróteros ítan ikonomikós, alá dhen íche fisikó fos. o dhéfteros chriazótan megháles episkevés. teliká, epiléksame ton tríto
Initially, we examined three premises. The smallest was affordable, but it had no natural light. The second needed major repairs. In the end, we chose the third.
Only the beginning and the conclusion need explicit stage markers. The middle remains coherent through the ordered noun phrases ο μικρότερος, ο δεύτερος, τον τρίτο.
Common Mistakes
1. Adding a comma after initial αλλά by default. Neutral edited prose normally attaches the conjunction directly to its clause. A marked rhetorical pause is possible, so this is contextual guidance rather than a grammatical ban.
✅ Αλλά η επιτροπή δεν είχε ολοκληρώσει την αξιολόγηση.
alá i epitropí dhen íche oloklirósi tin aksiolóyisi
But the committee had not completed the evaluation.
2. Adding a comma between a compact neutral subject and predicate. The default sentence has no boundary there; genuine parenthesis or marked topic detachment can create one in a different structure.
✅ Η καινούρια αίθουσα είναι αρκετά μεγάλη για όλους.
i kenúria éthusa íne arketá megháli ya ólus
The new room is large enough for everyone.
3. Omitting the apostrophe in the fixed written connector γι' αυτό.
❌ Δεν υπήρχε λεωφορείο· γι αυτό πήραμε ταξί.
Incorrect in standard edited writing—the elided form is written γι' αυτό.
✅ Δεν υπήρχε λεωφορείο· γι' αυτό πήραμε ταξί.
dhen ipírche leoforío; yaftó pírame taksí
There was no bus; that's why we took a taxi.
Key Takeaways
- Use connectors to expose cause, contrast, sequence, and outcome—not to decorate every sentence.
- A paragraph can remain a sequence of separate sentences and still be tightly cohesive.
- Normally write a comma before αλλά between full clauses, no comma before neutral και, and a comma after a detachable sentence-initial connector.
- Avoid stacking same-function markers and avoid beginning every sentence with one.
