The everyday Modern Greek prepositions σε, από, με, για, μέχρι, χωρίς, προς, μετά and their common compounds govern the accusative. A smaller learned group—such as λόγω, μέσω, υπέρ, εναντίον—governs the genitive and belongs mainly to formal, journalistic, legal, or academic registers.
The full system is taught on accusative after prepositions, while preposition–article contraction owns the forms στον, στη(ν), στο, στους, στις, στα. This diagnostic page repairs case and contraction in complete phrases rather than reproducing either inventory.
The most visible error: a nominative article after με
English prepositions do not change the visible form of a following noun phrase. Greek με requires the accusative, so both article and noun must be checked.
❌ Πήγα στη συναυλία με ο φίλος μου από τη σχολή.
Incorrect — everyday με governs the accusative: με τον φίλο μου.
✅ Πήγα στη συναυλία με τον φίλο μου από τη σχολή.
pígha sti sinavlía me ton fílo mu apó ti scholí
I went to the concert with my friend from university.
Neutral current Standard retains final ν in masculine τον. Do not copy older or relaxed reductions into the written target; με τον φίλο remains visibly distinct from neuter με το.
❌ Μίλησα με η υπεύθυνη του τμήματος πριν φύγω.
Incorrect — με requires feminine accusative την before the vowel-initial noun.
✅ Μίλησα με την υπεύθυνη του τμήματος πριν φύγω.
mílisa me tin ipéfthini tu tmímatos prin fígho
I spoke with the head of the department before leaving.
Feminine τη(ν) is sound-conditioned. Here την retains ν before the following vowel; before a continuant such as δ-, neutral writing uses τη δουλειά.
για: people and purposes still take accusative
English for Giannis leaves the name unchanged. Greek marks both the article and, where possible, the name itself.
❌ Αυτό το δέμα είναι για ο Γιάννης από το διπλανό γραφείο.
Incorrect — για requires accusative τον Γιάννη.
✅ Αυτό το δέμα είναι για τον Γιάννη από το διπλανό γραφείο.
aftó to dhéma íne ya ton yáni apó to dhiplanó ghrafío
This parcel is for Giannis from the office next door.
❌ Κράτησα δύο θέσεις για οι καινούριοι συνάδελφοι.
Incorrect — plural για requires accusative τους καινούριους συναδέλφους.
✅ Κράτησα δύο θέσεις για τους καινούριους συναδέλφους.
krátisa dhío thésis ya tus kenúrius sinadhélfus
I saved two seats for the new colleagues.
The plural endings make the case especially audible: nominative οι καινούριοι συνάδελφοι becomes accusative τους καινούριους συναδέλφους.
από always takes accusative in its everyday uses
Origin, source, separation, agent, material, and comparison do not change the case selected by από. The noun phrase remains accusative.
❌ Η οικογένειά μου κατάγεται από η Κρήτη.
Incorrect — origin από requires accusative την Κρήτη.
✅ Η οικογένειά μου κατάγεται από την Κρήτη.
i ikoyéniá mu katáyete apó tin kríti
My family comes from Crete.
❌ Το γραφείο είναι πιο φωτεινό από ο διάδρομος.
Incorrect — comparative από is still a preposition and requires από τον διάδρομο.
✅ Το γραφείο είναι πιο φωτεινό από τον διάδρομο.
to ghrafío íne pio fotinó apó ton dhiádhromo
The office is brighter than the corridor.
Pronoun comparisons receive concentrated practice on nominative after από. The governing case is exactly the same here as in από την Κρήτη.
Strong accusative pronouns after a preposition
A preposition cannot be followed by a subject pronoun or weak clitic. Choose a strong accusative form: (ε)μένα, (ε)σένα, αυτόν/αυτή(ν)/αυτό, εμάς, εσάς, αυτούς/αυτές/αυτά.
❌ Θα έρθεις μαζί με εγώ ή θα πάρεις το λεωφορείο;
Incorrect — after με use strong accusative εμένα or μένα.
✅ Θα έρθεις μαζί με μένα ή θα πάρεις το λεωφορείο;
tha érthis mazí me ména i tha páris to leoforío;
Will you come with me, or will you take the bus?
❌ Αγόρασα αυτό το βιβλίο για εσύ, όχι για τον αδερφό σου.
Incorrect — after για use strong accusative εσένα or σένα.
✅ Αγόρασα αυτό το βιβλίο για σένα, όχι για τον αδερφό σου.
aghórasa aftó to vivlío ya séna, óchi ya ton adherfó su
I bought this book for you, not for your brother.
Μαζί μου is a more idiomatic everyday alternative to μαζί με μένα when no contrast follows. The second form is chosen here because ή θα πάρεις… makes the independent participant salient; both are grammatical.
Other everyday prepositions follow the same rule
The accusative is not limited to the four most frequent forms. It remains after χωρίς, μέχρι, προς, μετά, and compounds ending in από, σε, με.
❌ Δεν μπορώ να ολοκληρώσω την αίτηση χωρίς η βεβαίωση του εργοδότη.
Incorrect — χωρίς requires accusative την βεβαίωση.
✅ Δεν μπορώ να ολοκληρώσω την αίτηση χωρίς τη βεβαίωση του εργοδότη.
dhen boró na olokliróso tin étisi chorís ti vevéosi tu erghodhóti
I can't complete the application without the employer's certificate.
Here feminine τη drops final ν before β-, following the sound-conditioned current rule.
❌ Προχωρήστε προς η έξοδος χωρίς να σταματήσετε.
Incorrect — προς requires accusative την έξοδο.
✅ Προχωρήστε προς την έξοδο χωρίς να σταματήσετε.
prochoríste pros tin éksodho chorís na stamatísete
Proceed toward the exit without stopping.
❌ Θα μείνουμε μέχρι η λήξη της συζήτησης.
Incorrect — the noun phrase after μέχρι must be accusative.
✅ Θα μείνουμε μέχρι τη λήξη της συζήτησης.
tha mínume méchri ti líksi tis sizítisis
We'll stay until the end of the discussion.
The last repair replaces an ill-formed noun phrase with an explicit accusative endpoint. A full finite clause after μέχρι να is a different construction and does not illustrate noun case.
σε + definite article must contract
Case can be correct while spelling remains wrong. Productive σε fuses obligatorily with the definite article.
❌ Άφησα τα κλειδιά σε το τραπέζι δίπλα στην πόρτα.
Incorrect — σε + το must fuse to στο.
✅ Άφησα τα κλειδιά στο τραπέζι δίπλα στην πόρτα.
áfisa ta klidhiá sto trapézi dhípla stin pórta
I left the keys on the table next to the door.
❌ Θα περιμένουμε σε την πλατεία μπροστά στο δημαρχείο μετά τη συναυλία.
Incorrect — σε + την fuses, and final ν remains before π: στην πλατεία.
✅ Θα περιμένουμε στην πλατεία μπροστά στο δημαρχείο μετά τη συναυλία.
tha periménume stin platía brostá sto dhimarchío metá ti sinavlía
We'll wait in the square in front of the town hall after the concert.
❌ Μοίρασαν τα φυλλάδια σε οι επισκέπτες στην είσοδο.
Incorrect — σε + τους contracts to στους for the masculine plural recipients.
✅ Μοίρασαν τα φυλλάδια στους επισκέπτες στην είσοδο.
mírasan ta filádhia stus episképtes stin ísodho
They handed out the leaflets to the visitors at the entrance.
The contractions preserve accusative gender and number: στον/στη(ν)/στο/στους/στις/στα. Forms such as στου Γιάννη are a separate ellipsis meaning “at Giannis's place,” not evidence that ordinary σε governs genitive.
A bare noun is still accusative
Without an article, the case may remain visible on the noun itself. Masculine ο καφές loses -ς after a preposition.
❌ Δεν λειτουργώ το πρωί χωρίς καφές.
Incorrect — χωρίς governs the bare accusative καφέ, not nominative καφές.
✅ Δεν λειτουργώ το πρωί χωρίς καφέ.
dhen liturghó to proí chorís kafé
I don't function in the morning without coffee.
The absence of an article does not suspend case assignment. It merely makes some feminine and neuter forms look identical across nominative and accusative.
Learned prepositions that govern the genitive
The everyday-accusative generalization has a real, limited exception. Learned forms retained in current formal language govern the genitive: λόγω, εξαιτίας, μέσω, υπέρ, εναντίον, μεταξύ, αντί, and κατά in its “against” sense.
✅ Η εκδήλωση αναβλήθηκε λόγω της κακοκαιρίας.
i ekdhílosi anavlíthike lógho tis kakokerías
The event was postponed because of the bad weather. (formal / written)
✅ Η επιτροπή ψήφισε υπέρ της πρότασης και εναντίον της τροπολογίας.
i epitropí psífise ipér tis prótasis ke enandíon tis tropoloyías
The committee voted for the proposal and against the amendment. (formal / institutional)
✅ Η αίτηση υποβάλλεται μέσω της ηλεκτρονικής πλατφόρμας.
i étisi ipoválete méso tis ilektronikís platfórmas
The application is submitted through the online platform. (formal / administrative)
Do not “correct” these genitives to accusative. Conversely, do not spread their government to everyday με, για, από, χωρίς.
Κατά illustrates the lexical split. Κατά τη γνώμη μου and κατά τις τρεις use accusative in everyday expressions; κατά της πρότασης uses genitive with the formal meaning “against the proposal.” Εκτός από + accusative is also ordinary “except/besides,” while bare learned εκτός + genitive appears in formal constructions.
Common Mistakes
Leaving a nominative article after a preposition
Change the whole phrase: με ο φίλος → με τον φίλο, για ο Γιάννης → για τον Γιάννη.
Writing σε and its definite article separately
Fuse them obligatorily: σε το → στο, σε την → στη(ν), σε τους → στους.
Assuming a bare noun has no case
The noun may show accusative itself: χωρίς καφέ, never ×χωρίς καφές.
Treating every genitive after a preposition as wrong
Learned λόγω της, μέσω της, υπέρ της, εναντίον της are current formal Greek. Label their register and preserve their government.

- Accusative After PrepositionsA1 — Every preposition you use in daily Greek — σε, από, με, για, μέχρι, χωρίς, προς — puts the following noun into the accusative, and σε fuses with the article to give στον, στη, στο; the genitive-taking prepositions are a small formal club you can safely postpone.
- Preposition + Article: στον, στη, στοA1 — σε is the one Greek preposition that fuses with the article, and it fuses obligatorily — the full grid στον/στη(ν)/στο/στους/στις/στα plus the genitive στου/στης/στων, and why από, για and με only elide instead.
- Nominative After από in ComparisonsA2 — Repair nominative pronouns after comparative από by using the strong accusative forms across the full person paradigm.
