A discourse contrast marker tells how a new statement responds to what came before: it may defeat an expectation, contradict a claim, add a counter-consideration, or limit a conclusion. Unlike clause-joining αλλά, it can reveal the writer's stance toward an entire preceding statement.
The clause syntax of αλλά, όμως, and corrective παρά, including the mobility of όμως, belongs to αλλά, όμως, παρά. Here the focus is the discourse relation across sentence boundaries.
όμως: neutral contrast that carries across sentences
Όμως is the everyday, neutral “however/but.” It can open a response sentence, appear after its first constituent, or come later. The position changes rhythm and focus, not the underlying contrast.
Η πρώτη λύση είναι φθηνή. Όμως, απαιτεί πολύ περισσότερο χρόνο.

The first solution is cheap. However, it requires much more time.
Η πρόγνωση ήταν καλή. Η θάλασσα, όμως, αγρίεψε το απόγευμα.

The forecast was good. The sea, however, became rough in the afternoon.

Across sentences, όμως reverses an expectation created by the first statement. Sentence-initial Όμως, is the clearest writing default; the conjunction page maps its other positions.
ωστόσο and εντούτοις: careful “nevertheless”
Ωστόσο is frequent in reports, journalism, essays, and careful speech (formal/written). It introduces a qualification that survives despite the first fact.
Η μελέτη βασίζεται σε μικρό δείγμα. Ωστόσο, τα αποτελέσματα αξίζουν περαιτέρω διερεύνηση.

Εντούτοις is distinctly formal or literary (formal/literary). It is modern, not archaic, but conspicuous in casual chat.

Both normally stand near the sentence beginning with a comma. Initial position keeps a long argument easy to follow.
αντίθετα: direct opposition or correction
Αντίθετα means “on the contrary/by contrast.” It is stronger than a general “however”: the second statement points in the opposite direction or explicitly rejects an expectation created by the first.
Οι τιμές δεν μειώθηκαν. Αντίθετα, αυξήθηκαν σημαντικά μέσα σε έναν μήνα.

Prices did not fall. On the contrary, they rose significantly within a month.
Ο αδερφός του μιλάει πολύ. Η Εύα, αντίθετα, ακούει περισσότερο απ' όσο μιλάει.

Her brother talks a lot. Eva, by contrast, listens more than she talks.
The first corrects a proposition; the second compares two people. Use αντίθετα only for a genuinely opposing direction.
από την άλλη: balance a counter-consideration
Από την άλλη means “on the other hand.” It places a competing consideration beside the first rather than necessarily refuting it.
Το διαμέρισμα είναι κοντά στη δουλειά. Από την άλλη, το ενοίκιο είναι πολύ υψηλό.

The apartment is close to work. On the other hand, the rent is very high.

It is neutral in discussion and organized writing. Greek can pair από τη μια…από την άλλη, but the second phrase also stands alone when the first side is obvious.
παρ' όλα αυτά: a defeated obstacle
Παρ' όλα αυτά literally means “despite all that” and signals that the next fact holds despite the whole preceding situation. It is neutral and emphatic, common in speech and writing.
Χάσαμε δύο ανταποκρίσεις και φτάσαμε μετά τα μεσάνυχτα. Παρ' όλα αυτά, το ταξίδι άξιζε τον κόπο.

We missed two connections and arrived after midnight. Despite all that, the trip was worth it.
Unlike subordinate παρόλο που, παρ' όλα αυτά points back to complete discourse. See concessive clauses.
πάντως: limiting or stabilizing a claim
Neutral πάντως, especially common in conversation, means “anyway,” “in any case,” or “still.” It states what remains true regardless of the previous point.
Δεν ξέρω αν θα δεχτεί την πρόταση. Πάντως, υποσχέθηκε να τη σκεφτεί σοβαρά.

I don't know whether she'll accept the proposal. In any case, she promised to think about it seriously.

Πάντως can be weaker than όμως: it protects a minimum conclusion despite uncertainty.
Why this is not simply αλλά
Αλλά directly coordinates clauses: Ήθελα να μείνω, αλλά έφυγα. Discourse markers can respond to a paragraph and show how the writer evaluates it. Greek also licenses αλλά after a full stop when a direct adversative link is wanted; the markers here simply specialize in organizing the broader relation.
Common Mistakes
1. Misspelling ωστόσο with an extra syllable. The standard form ends in -στόσο.
❌ Η λύση είναι ακριβή. Ωστόσω, παραμένει η ασφαλέστερη.
Incorrect spelling—the connector is ωστόσο.
✅ Η λύση είναι ακριβή. Ωστόσο, παραμένει η ασφαλέστερη.

The solution is expensive. Nevertheless, it remains the safest.
2. Dropping final ν before the vowel of άλλη. Neutral Standard Greek writes την άλλη.

Incorrect—retain ν before the vowel: από την άλλη.
✅ Από την άλλη, η διαδικασία είναι απλούστερη.

3. Breaking agreement inside παρ' όλα αυτά. The fixed phrase contains plural όλα.

Incorrect—the resumptive expression is παρ' όλα αυτά.
✅ Παρ' όλα αυτά, ολοκληρώσαμε το έργο εγκαίρως.
