English distributes speech among say, tell, speak, and talk. Greek draws its main everyday boundary elsewhere: λέω packages words or a message, while μιλάω presents speaking as an activity and identifies its language, partner, addressee, or topic.
The decision table
| What the sentence highlights | Choose | Frequent frame |
|---|---|---|
| the words, fact, answer, story, or message | λέω | λέω κάτι · λέω ότι/πως… |
| a direction telling somebody what to do | λέω | του λέω να… |
| the activity of speaking or a language | μιλάω | μιλάω ελληνικά |
| the addressee, conversation partner, or topic | μιλάω | μιλάω σε/με/για… |
Τι είπε η Σοφία για την αλλαγή του προγράμματος;
ti ípe i Sofía ya tin alayí tu proghrámatos;
What did Sofia say about the change of schedule?
Με ποιον μίλησε η Σοφία μετά τη συνάντηση;
me pion mílise i Sofía metá ti sinándisi;
Who did Sofia talk to after the meeting?
The first question asks for content. The second asks for the other participant in a conversation. Both concern the same event, but they select a different view of it.
λέω: put content into words
Choose λέω when you could point to what was said: a word, a name, the truth, an opinion, a proposition, or an instruction. The content can be a noun, a pronoun, a quoted utterance, or a clause.
Πες μου την αλήθεια, ακόμα κι αν δεν μου αρέσει.
pes mu tin alíthia, akóma ki an dhen mu arési
Tell me the truth, even if I don't like it.
Ο γιατρός είπε ότι οι εξετάσεις είναι φυσιολογικές.
o yatrós ípe óti i eksetásis íne fisioloyikés
The doctor said that the test results are normal.
With a weak recipient pronoun, neutral Standard Greek uses the genitive: μου είπε, σου λέω, του είπα. A full noun recipient uses σε + accusative: το είπα στη Μαρία. English tell Maria has a direct object; Greek marks the recipient indirectly.
Το είπα στον Κώστα χθες, αλλά δεν το θυμόταν σήμερα.
to ípa ston Kósta chthes, alá dhen to thimótan símera
I told Kostas yesterday, but he didn't remember it today.
A να-clause after λέω reports a direction rather than a statement:
Μου είπε να περιμένω έξω μέχρι να με φωνάξουν.
mu ípe na periméno ékso méchri na me fonáksun
She told me to wait outside until they called me.
The difference between είπε ότι… and είπε να…, including viewpoint shifts in a report, belongs on reported speech and the λέω reference page. Here it is simply evidence that λέω carries a message.
μιλάω: present speaking as an activity
Choose μιλάω when you describe speaking itself: how long it lasted, what language was used, who participated, who was addressed, or what topic occupied the conversation. The everyday verb is neutral; learned ομιλώ belongs mainly to formal settings and set uses.
Μιλάμε εδώ και μισή ώρα και ακόμα δεν έχουμε αποφασίσει.
miláme edhó ke misí óra ke akóma dhen échume apofasísi
We've been talking for half an hour and still haven't decided.
Η νέα υπάλληλος μιλάει ελληνικά, γαλλικά και αραβικά.
i néa ipálilos milái eliniká, ghaliká ke araviká
The new employee speaks Greek, French, and Arabic.
Language names normally appear bare after μιλάω. The main prepositional choices divide roles:
- μιλάω σε κάποιον or a genitive clitic means address or speak to someone;
- μιλάω με κάποιον presents a two-way conversation;
- μιλάω για κάτι gives the topic.
Του μίλησα ήρεμα, αλλά εκείνος δεν απάντησε.
tu mílisa írema, alá ekínos dhen apándise
I spoke to him calmly, but he didn't answer.
Μίλησα με τη λογίστρια για το λάθος στο τιμολόγιο.
mílisa me ti loyístria ya to láthos sto timolóyio
I talked with the accountant about the error on the invoice.
These two frames can describe different interaction. Του μίλησα allows a one-sided address; μίλησα μαζί του strongly suggests that both people took part. The full set of frames belongs on the μιλάω reference page.
One encounter can contain both verbs
The verbs are not rival labels for mutually exclusive events. A long conversation can contain very little information, and a short sentence can deliver the essential message.
Μιλήσαμε πολλή ώρα, αλλά δεν μου είπε γιατί έφυγε.
milísame polí óra, alá dhen mu ípe yatí éfiye
We talked for a long time, but he didn't tell me why he left.
Δεν μιλάει πολύ στις συσκέψεις, όμως όταν λέει κάτι όλοι τον ακούν.
dhen milái polí stis sisképsis, ómos ótan léi káti óli ton akún
He doesn't speak much in meetings, but when he says something everyone listens to him.
In the first example μιλήσαμε measures the conversational activity; είπε γιατί… asks whether a particular explanation was supplied. In the second, μιλάει measures participation while λέει κάτι identifies an utterance with content.
Common Mistakes
Using λέω for command of a language
Language ability is an activity frame, so choose μιλάω.
Μιλάς ισπανικά αρκετά καλά για να βοηθήσεις τους πελάτες;
milás ispaniká arketá kalá ya na voithísis tus pelátes;
Do you speak Spanish well enough to help the customers?
Using μιλάω with a direct content object
If you name the answer, truth, phrase, or story itself, λέω is the normal verb.
Η Εύα είπε μια ιστορία που μας έκανε όλους να γελάσουμε.
i Éva ípe mia istoría pu mas ékane ólus na ghelásume
Eva told a story that made us all laugh.
Copying English direct-object “tell me”
The neutral Standard recipient is genitive μου, not the accusative object με.
Πες μου τι συνέβη πριν φτάσει η αστυνομία.
pes mu ti sinévi prin ftási i astinomía
Tell me what happened before the police arrived.
Treating σε and με after μιλάω as interchangeable
Both are grammatical, but σε profiles the addressee and με the conversational partner.
Η διευθύντρια μίλησε στους γονείς και μετά μίλησε μαζί τους κατ' ιδίαν.
i dhiefthíndria mílise stus ghonís ke metá mílise mazí tus kat' idhían
The head teacher addressed the parents and then spoke with them privately.
Assuming λέω always maps to English “say”
With a genitive recipient, λέω naturally translates as tell.
Σου είπα ήδη ότι θα αργήσω λίγο απόψε.
su ípa ídhi óti tha aryíso lígho apópse
I already told you that I'll be a little late tonight.
Key Takeaways
- λέω packages words, facts, stories, answers, and directions.
- μιλάω profiles speaking as an activity, a language, an addressee, a partner, or a topic.
- Neutral Standard recipients use genitive clitics: μου είπε, του μίλησα; full noun recipients use σε + accusative.
- The same encounter can be described with both verbs because activity and communicated content are different dimensions.
