Sentence and Stance Adverbs

A manner adverb describes an action; a sentence adverb tells the listener how to interpret the entire claim. In Δυστυχώς, ακυρώθηκε η πτήση, δυστυχώς does not describe how the cancellation happened. It presents that fact as unfortunate from the speaker's point of view. This sentence-level scope makes stance adverbs especially useful in arguments, reports, presentations, and careful conversation.

Evaluation, certainty, and commitment

Stance adverbs can evaluate an outcome, grade its probability, or show how strongly the speaker commits to it.

FunctionUseful choicesRegister and force
positive/negative evaluationευτυχώς, δυστυχώςunmarked in speech and writing
evident conclusionπροφανώς, σαφώςσαφώς often raises the tone toward (formal) argument
probabilityπιθανώς(formal); everyday speech often prefers μάλλον or πιθανότατα
firm commitmentοπωσδήποτεunmarked; “definitely / in any case”

Δυστυχώς, η τελευταία πτήση ακυρώθηκε λόγω της καταιγίδας.

dhistichós, i teleftéa ptísi akiróthike lógho tis kateyídhas

Unfortunately, the last flight was cancelled because of the storm.

Ευτυχώς, πρόλαβα το λεωφορείο και έφτασα στην ώρα μου.

eftichós, prólava to leoforío ke éftasa stin óra mu

Fortunately, I caught the bus and arrived on time.

Πιθανώς τα αποτελέσματα θα ανακοινωθούν αύριο το πρωί.

pithanós ta apotelézmata tha anakinothún ávrio to proí

The results will probably be announced tomorrow morning. (formal)

Οπωσδήποτε θα σε πάρω τηλέφωνο μόλις φτάσω.

opozdhípote tha se páro tiléfono mólis ftáso

I will definitely call you as soon as I arrive.

English often relies on intonation or modal verbs for these meanings. Greek can do that too, but a well-chosen stance adverb makes the speaker's relationship to the proposition explicit. Πιθανώς weakens commitment; προφανώς and σαφώς present the conclusion as supported; οπωσδήποτε removes doubt.

💡
Be careful with προφανώς and σαφώς in disagreement. They can imply that the answer should already be obvious, so they may sound dismissive even when the grammar is perfectly neutral.

From -ώς formation to sentence-level meaning

Several high-frequency stance adverbs end in learned -ώς: προφανώς, δυστυχώς, ευτυχώς, πιθανώς, σαφώς. The ending is also found in ordinary everyday words, so -ώς does not automatically mean “formal.” More importantly, the ending does not itself create sentence scope: context and position do.

Compare σαφώς in two jobs. After the verb it can describe the manner of speaking; detached at the beginning, it evaluates the conclusion.

Η πρόεδρος εξήγησε σαφώς τι πρέπει να αλλάξει.

i próedhros eksíyise safós ti prépi na aláksi

The chair explained clearly what needs to change.

Σαφώς, πρέπει να αλλάξουμε το χρονοδιάγραμμα.

safós, prépi na aláksume to chronodhiághrama

Clearly, we need to change the timetable. (formal argument)

The first σαφώς modifies εξήγησε; the second has the whole claim πρέπει να αλλάξουμε... in its scope. This is why translating both mechanically as English clearly is not enough: ask what the adverb comments on.

Organizing and reformulating a message

Some sentence adverbs also behave as discourse organizers. Δηλαδή reformulates or draws out an implication; τελικά presents a final outcome; βασικά gives the main point; ουσιαστικά reduces something to its essence; κατά τα άλλα returns to what remains after an exception.

Δηλαδή, θέλεις να μεταφέρουμε τη συνάντηση για την Παρασκευή;

dhiladhí, thélis na metaférume ti sinándisi ya tin Paraskeví;

So, do you mean you want us to move the meeting to Friday?

Τελικά, βρήκαμε μικρότερο σπίτι, αλλά σε καλύτερη γειτονιά.

teliká, vríkame mikrótero spíti, alá se kalíteri yitoniá

In the end, we found a smaller flat, but in a better neighbourhood.

Βασικά, δεν διαφωνώ με την ιδέα· με ανησυχεί το κόστος.

vasiká, dhen dhiafonó me tin idhée; me anisichí to kóstos

Basically, I don't disagree with the idea; I'm worried about the cost. (informal)

Ουσιαστικά, η έκθεση επιβεβαιώνει όσα γνωρίζαμε ήδη.

usiastiká, i ékthesi epivevéoni ósa ghnorízame ídhi

Essentially, the report confirms what we already knew. (formal)

Το δωμάτιο είναι λίγο σκοτεινό· κατά τα άλλα, το διαμέρισμα μας άρεσε πολύ.

to dhomátio íne lígho skotinó; katá ta ála, to dhiamérizma mas árese polí

The room is a little dark; otherwise, we liked the flat very much.

Βασικά is common in (informal) speech and can soften the launch of a main point. In polished (formal) or (academic) writing, ουσιαστικά is often the better choice when you genuinely mean “in essence,” but the two are not automatic synonyms. The broader mechanics of turn management and reformulation belong to discourse markers, especially δηλαδή; this page owns their sentence-level evaluative use.

Position and commas

Sentence-initial position announces the speaker's frame before the claim and is especially clear in writing. A comma is usual when the adverb is pronounced as a detached comment: Δυστυχώς, ..., Κατά τα άλλα, .... Short integrated adverbs need not be separated: Οπωσδήποτε θα έρθω is written naturally without a comma.

Medial placement is also possible, usually after the subject or another topic. It sounds less like a heading and more like a parenthetical assessment.

Η λύση, προφανώς, απαιτεί περισσότερο χρόνο και χρήμα.

i lísi, profanós, apetí perisótero chróno ke chríma

The solution, obviously, requires more time and money.

💡
Do not insert commas mechanically around every stance adverb. Use them when the adverb is detached as a comment; omit them when it is integrated into the clause, as in Οπωσδήποτε θα έρθω.

Common Mistakes

❌ Προφανής, έγινε λάθος στον τελικό υπολογισμό.

Incorrect—the sentence-level adverb is προφανώς, not the adjective προφανής.

✅ Προφανώς, έγινε λάθος στον τελικό υπολογισμό.

profanós, éyine láthos ston telikó ipologhizmó

Obviously, there was an error in the final calculation.

❌ Οποιοσδήποτε θα σου τηλεφωνήσω μόλις έχω νέα.

Incorrect—οποιοσδήποτε means 'anyone/whichever'; the adverb 'definitely' is οπωσδήποτε.

✅ Οπωσδήποτε θα σου τηλεφωνήσω μόλις έχω νέα.

opozdhípote tha su tilefoníso mólis écho néa

I will definitely call you as soon as I have news.

❌ Κατά άλλα, το ξενοδοχείο ήταν πολύ καλό.

Incorrect—the fixed expression is κατά τα άλλα, with the article τα.

✅ Κατά τα άλλα, το ξενοδοχείο ήταν πολύ καλό.

katá ta ála, to ksenodhochío ítan polí kaló

Otherwise, the hotel was very good.

Key Takeaways

  • Stance adverbs evaluate the whole proposition rather than the manner of one action.
  • Initial position gives the frame early; commas mark a detached comment, not the category itself.
  • -ώς is a learned formation pattern, but its words range from everyday to (formal).
  • Δηλαδή, τελικά, βασικά, ουσιαστικά, and κατά τα άλλα bridge sentence grammar and discourse organization.
