Text: An Academic Abstract

Every Finnish thesis and dissertation carries a tiivistelmä — a one-paragraph abstract — even when the body is written in English. Reading one teaches you the machinery of the whole academic register: the impersonal passive that replaces the English "we", the nominalizing suffixes that turn processes into nouns, the participle phrases packed in front of their head noun, and a habit of careful hedging that never quite commits. The abstract below is an original composition, not a quotation, written to be a plausible social-science tiivistelmä. Read it whole, then work through it sentence by sentence.

💡
Everything here is (academic / formal). Where the statute register (see legal and official language) hides the agent to bind everyone, the scholarly register hides it to sound objective and disciplined. Same passive, different purpose.

The text

— Original text composed for this guide; representative of the Finnish academic tiivistelmä.

Plain English: This study examines the effects of the spread of remote work on employees' well-being. The aim of the study is to determine how the blurring of the boundary between work and free time relates to perceived strain. The data were collected with a questionnaire, to which 412 people working in expert positions responded. The responses were analysed with both statistical and qualitative methods. The results show that the increase in remote work appears to weaken recovery when the employee cannot separate work from the rest of life. On the basis of the observations, it can be concluded that the importance of flexible working hours is emphasised especially in expert professions. In further research it would be necessary to examine the phenomenon over a longer time span.

Grammar in action

Sentence 1: Tässä tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan etätyön yleistymisen vaikutuksia työntekijöiden hyvinvointiin.

  • Tässä tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan — "in this study, [one] examines". tarkastellaan is the impersonal passive of tarkastella, and it is the default voice of the entire genre: no "I", no "we", just "it is examined". This is the single most important move in academic Finnish — see the passive overview.
  • etätyön yleistymisen vaikutuksia — "the effects of the spread of remote work", a genitive chain built on a nominalization: yleistyminen ("becoming common, spread") is the -minen verbal noun of yleistyä, here genitive yleistymisen. vaikutuksia ("effects") is partitive plural, the object of the passive.
  • työntekijöiden hyvinvointiin — "on employees' well-being"; the illative hyvinvointiin is required by the rection of vaikutus … johonkin ("effect on something"). See nominalization.

Tässä tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan etätyön yleistymisen vaikutuksia työntekijöiden hyvinvointiin.

This study examines the effects of the spread of remote work on employees' well-being.

Sentence 2: Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää, miten … hämärtyminen on yhteydessä koettuun kuormittuneisuuteen.

  • Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää — "the study's aim is to determine". This is the phrase to memorise: where English writes "we aimed to find out", Finnish makes the aim itself the grammatical subject. tavoitteena is the essive ("as the aim"), and the whole frame is impersonal.
  • työn ja vapaa-ajan rajan hämärtyminen — "the blurring of the boundary between work and free time", again a -minen nominalization (hämärtyminen, from hämärtyä "to blur") heading a genitive chain.
  • on yhteydessä koettuun kuormittuneisuuteen — "is connected to perceived strain". olla yhteydessä johonkin is fixed rection (illative). koettuun is the passive past participle of kokea ("experienced, perceived") used as a premodifier; kuormittuneisuuteen is a double nominalization — kuormittuakuormittunut → the -uus abstract noun kuormittuneisuus ("state of being loaded/strained"), illative. The -uus suffix, turning an adjective or participle into an abstract quality-noun, is a hallmark of the register.

Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää, miten työn ja vapaa-ajan rajan hämärtyminen on yhteydessä koettuun kuormittuneisuuteen.

The aim of the study is to determine how the blurring of the boundary between work and free time relates to perceived strain.

Sentence 3: Aineisto kerättiin kyselylomakkeella, johon vastasi 412 asiantuntijatehtävissä toimivaa henkilöä.

  • Aineisto kerättiin — "the data were collected", the passive past (methods sections default to it): kerättiin from kerätä. kyselylomakkeella ("with a questionnaire") is the adessive of instrument.
  • johon vastasi 412 … henkilöä — "to which 412 … people responded". johon is the illative of joka ("to which"), because vastata governs the illative (vastata johonkin, "respond to something"). After the numeral 412, the counted noun is partitive singular: henkilöä.
  • asiantuntijatehtävissä toimivaa henkilöä — "people working in expert positions", a premodifying participle phrase: toimiva is the active present participle of toimia ("to act, work"), and it drags its own inessive modifier asiantuntijatehtävissä ("in expert tasks") in front of the noun. English unpacks this into a relative clause ("people who work in…"); Finnish compresses it into a single participle. See non-finite forms in the written register.

Aineisto kerättiin kyselylomakkeella, johon vastasi 412 asiantuntijatehtävissä toimivaa henkilöä.

The data were collected with a questionnaire, to which 412 people working in expert positions responded.

Sentence 4: Vastauksia analysoitiin sekä tilastollisin että laadullisin menetelmin.

  • Vastauksia analysoitiin — "the responses were analysed", passive past again; vastauksia is partitive plural (a partial, open set).
  • sekä tilastollisin että laadullisin menetelmin — "with both statistical and qualitative methods". sekä … että … = "both … and …". The striking form is menetelmin — the instructive plural of menetelmä ("method"), meaning "by means of methods". The instructive is a bookish, frozen way of saying "by/with"; tilastollisin and laadullisin are the adjectives agreeing in the same instructive plural. You will rarely meet this case outside academic and literary prose.

Vastauksia analysoitiin sekä tilastollisin että laadullisin menetelmin.

The responses were analysed using both statistical and qualitative methods.

Sentence 5: Tulokset osoittavat, että etätyön lisääntyminen näyttää heikentävän palautumista silloin, kun työntekijä ei kykene erottamaan työtä muusta elämästä.

  • Tulokset osoittavat, että … — "the results show that …", an että-complement after a verb of finding/showing (osoittaa). Verbs like osoittaa, todeta, havaita take a full että-clause for their finding.
  • näyttää heikentävän — "appears to weaken". This is the referential construction (referatiivirakenne): näyttää
    • the present participle in the genitive heikentävän. It compresses "it seems that it weakens" into three words, and it doubles as a hedgenäyttää keeps the claim tentative. See the referential -vAn construction.
  • ei kykene erottamaan työtä muusta elämästä — "cannot separate work from the rest of life". kyetä governs the third infinitive illative (erottamaan); erottaa jokin jostakin takes the elative (muusta elämästä, "from other life"). lisääntyminen and palautuminenpalautumista are two more -minen nominalizations.

Tulokset osoittavat, että etätyön lisääntyminen näyttää heikentävän palautumista silloin, kun työntekijä ei kykene erottamaan työtä muusta elämästä.

The results show that the increase in remote work appears to weaken recovery when the employee cannot separate work from the rest of life.

Sentence 6: Havaintojen perusteella voidaan todeta, että joustavien työaikojen merkitys korostuu erityisesti asiantuntija-ammateissa.

  • Havaintojen perusteella — "on the basis of the observations", the postposition perusteella governing the genitive plural havaintojen. A standard academic connector.
  • voidaan todeta, että … — "it can be concluded that …". voidaan is the passive of voida ("can"), a triple-strength impersonal hedge: not "I conclude", not even "one concludes", but "it can be concluded".
  • joustavien työaikojen merkitys korostuu — "the importance of flexible working hours is emphasised". joustavien is the present participle of joustaa ("to flex") as a premodifier; korostua ("to be emphasised") is a reflexive-passive-flavoured verb typical of the register, letting the sentence report a result with no one doing the emphasising.

Havaintojen perusteella voidaan todeta, että joustavien työaikojen merkitys korostuu erityisesti asiantuntija-ammateissa.

On the basis of the observations, it can be concluded that the importance of flexible working hours is emphasised especially in expert professions.

Sentence 7: Jatkotutkimuksessa olisi tarpeen tarkastella ilmiötä pidemmällä aikavälillä.

  • olisi tarpeen tarkastella — "it would be necessary to examine". The conditional olisi ("would be") is the classic closing hedge: the writer recommends future work without asserting it as fact. tarpeen ("necessary", genitive of tarve) + infinitive is a mild necessive idiom.
  • tarkastella ilmiötä — "to examine the phenomenon"; ilmiötä is partitive (an unbounded, ongoing examination).
  • pidemmällä aikavälillä — "over a longer time span"; pidemmällä is the comparative of pitkä in the adessive, aikavälillä the adessive of aikaväli. Ending on a hedged call for more research is the fixed rhetorical close of the genre.

Jatkotutkimuksessa olisi tarpeen tarkastella ilmiötä pidemmällä aikavälillä.

In further research it would be necessary to examine the phenomenon over a longer time span.

Why the "we" disappears

An English abstract says "We examinedwe foundwe suggest". The Finnish tiivistelmä refuses the pronoun almost everywhere: tarkastellaan ("is examined"), kerättiin ("were collected"), voidaan todeta ("it can be concluded"). Where a doer must appear, it is demoted to a noun and made the subject: tutkimuksen tavoitteena on… ("the study's aim is…"). Combine that with the hedges — näyttää heikentävän ("appears to weaken"), olisi tarpeen ("it would be necessary") — and you get the register's whole personality: impersonal, cautious, and noun-heavy. It is not evasive so much as disciplined: the claims are meant to stand on the data, not on the author.

Common mistakes

❌ Me tutkimme etätyön vaikutuksia ja huomasimme, että...

Too personal for an abstract — the first-person plural 'me' + active verbs reads as spoken or journalistic, not scholarly.

✅ Tässä tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan etätyön vaikutuksia...

This study examines the effects of remote work... — the impersonal passive is the academic default.

❌ Tavoitteemme oli selvittää...

Weak register — 'our aim was' foregrounds the authors; the genre prefers the study as subject.

✅ Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää...

The aim of the study is to determine... — nominalized subject in the essive.

❌ Tulokset osoittavat, että etätyö näyttää heikentää palautumista.

Grammar error — after 'näyttää' the referential construction needs the -vAn participle, not a second finite verb.

✅ Tulokset osoittavat, että etätyö näyttää heikentävän palautumista.

The results show that remote work appears to weaken recovery. — referential 'heikentävän'.

❌ etätyön vaikutus hyvinvoinnille

Wrong rection — 'vaikutus' takes the illative of its target, not the allative.

✅ etätyön vaikutus hyvinvointiin

the effect of remote work on well-being — illative 'hyvinvointiin'.

Key takeaways

💡
The passive is the scholarly "we".Tarkastellaan, kerättiin, analysoitiin, voidaan todeta — the impersonal passive carries almost every claim, and where a subject is unavoidable the study itself takes the role: tutkimuksen tavoitteena on….
💡
Actions become nouns, and nouns pile up. The suffixes -minen (yleistyminen, hämärtyminen, palautuminen) and -uus (kuormittuneisuus) turn processes and qualities into nouns that then head long genitive chains. Reading academic Finnish is largely the skill of unpacking those nouns back into verbs.
💡
Hedge, and hedge with grammar. The register signals caution through form: näyttää heikentävän ("appears to weaken", the referential -vAn) and the conditional close olisi tarpeen ("it would be necessary"). A confident finding is stated; a probable one is grammatically softened.
