Filipino can select a cause, stimulus, grounds, or reason as the ang-marked pivot. High-frequency ika- families commonly present what brings about an emotion, state, or result—ikinatuwa, ikinalungkot, ikinabahala—while some ipag- families select what motivates an intentional response—ipinagdiwang, ipinagpasalamat, ipinaglaban. Traditional teaching may call this pokus sa sanhi or reason focus.
These patterns belong to the guide's broader benefactive/instrumental voice domain, but their distinguishing semantic role is cause or reason. They are strongly lexical: ika- and ipag- cannot be attached freely to every adjective or action.
Two Major Cause–Reason Frames
| Frame | Pivot | Other central participant | Typical meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| ika- + emotion/change root | stimulus or cause with ang | experiencer/affected participant with ng/ni | cause joy, grief, worry, damage |
| ipag- + intentional response root | grounds or cause with ang | actor with ng/ni | celebrate, thank for, defend |
| actor/experiencer alternative | actor/experiencer with ang | cause commonly with sa/dahil sa | view event from experiencer |
The doctor's arrival before noon pleased the parents. (cause pivot)
Ang pagdating ng doktor is the stimulus pivot. Ng mga magulang expresses the experiencers. Natural English may make either the arrival or the parents its subject; Filipino alignment comes from the verb and markers.
A Controlled Experiencer–Cause Comparison
The parents were pleased with the clear examination result. (experiencer pivot)
The clear examination result pleased the parents. (cause pivot)
The first selects ang mga magulang and marks the stimulus with sa. The second selects the result and changes the experiencers to ng mga magulang. Neither is a more passive version of the other; they track different participants.
Other established affective families behave similarly:
Ikinalungkot ng mga guro ang biglaang pagsasara ng silid-aklatan.
The sudden closure of the library saddened the teachers.
The rapid rise of the river worried the residents.
The pivot is often an event nominalization with pag-, a fact, or a proposition because causes are frequently situations rather than physical objects. It can also be a concrete stimulus when the lexical family permits.
Causes of Results, Not Only Emotions
The salt water that entered the field caused the seedlings to be ruined.
The salt water is cause pivot; ng mga punla identifies what was damaged. An actor-voice alternative, Nasira ang mga punla dahil sa maalat na tubig, instead selects the affected seedlings and expresses cause through dahil sa. See the reason-clause guide for the wider contrast between verbal cause alignment and an adverbial reason phrase.
The cause need not be animate or intentional. Indeed, ika- often suits nonvolitional causation. Do not infer that an ang-marked cause is an agent.
Reasons for Intentional Responses
The whole village celebrated because of their team's victory. (actor pivot)
The whole village celebrated their team's victory. (reason/cause pivot)
Ang tagumpay is the grounds for celebration. The celebrating community becomes ng buong baryo. English again prefers an active clause.
Rina gave thanks for the help her family received.
The fishers fought for their right to pass through the bay.
These ipag- verbs have lexicalized meanings. The selected phrase may be grounds, cause, principle, or purpose depending on the verb. “Reason pivot” is a useful umbrella, not a promise that ipag- always equals English for.
Aspect and Event Contour
The continuing rise in costs is still worrying the board.
Incompleted ikinababahala presents the concern as continuing. The particle sequence pa rin follows the predicate naturally.
The students will be delighted by the competition's return next year.
Contemplated ikagagalak presents the emotional result as unbegun. Sa susunod na taon supplies future time. The stimulus remains pivot in both aspectual views.
Questions, Negation, and Conversation
The criticism did not anger Pio; in fact, it even helped him.
Negation denies the emotional result but leaves ang puna as cause pivot.
—What in the report worried you? —The shortage of clean water in three barangays.
Respectful/plural experiencer ninyo is ng-form. Ano asks for the cause pivot, and the answer is a natural ang-marked fragment.
Lexical Limits and Variation
Some cause families are highly conventional in formal notices and careful prose—ikinalulungkot, ikinagagalak, ikinababahala—and may sound (formal) compared with a conversational experiencer-pivot clause such as Nalungkot kami sa balita. Both are standard. Contemporary speakers choose between them according to lexical familiarity, register, and which participant they are tracking.
If an ika-/ipag- form is uncertain, use an established actor/experiencer clause with sa or dahil sa. That choice is clearer than inventing morphology.
Common Mistakes
Incorrect as a complete cause-voice clause — the selected result pivot requires ang.
The clear result of the second examination pleased the parents.
❌ Ikinagalit si Pio ang maling paratang.
Incorrect — the accusation is cause pivot, so the experiencer Pio takes ni.
The false accusation against his sibling angered Pio.
Incorrect — the victory is the reason pivot, while the celebrating community is non-pivot actor.
The whole village celebrated the team's championship victory.
Incorrect cause-voice frame — dahil sa belongs to the alternative experiencer-pivot construction.
The teachers were saddened because the library closed. (experiencer pivot)
