The contemplated aspect of pa-...-an presents a caused event as intended, anticipated, planned, or not yet begun, while an affected location, recipient, or beneficiary remains the pivot. A common pattern reduplicates the causative material: palagyan β papalagyan, patayuan β papatayuan, and padalhan β papadalhan. English often uses will, be going to, plan to, or have something done, but none is itself a Filipino future-tense marker.
Forming the Contemplated Paradigm
For many core families, the contemplated form has papa- followed by the root material and -an. This is easiest to learn beside the basic, completed, and incompleted forms.
| Root | Basic | Contemplated | Typical sense |
|---|---|---|---|
| lagay | palagyan | papalagyan | will have something installed at/on |
| tayo | patayuan | papatayuan | will have something built at |
| tanim | pataniman | papataniman | will have something planted on |
| dala | padalhan | papadalhan | will send something to |
| gawa | pagawan | papagawan | will have something made for |
We'll have a fan installed in the kitchen before the hot season.
The association will have a shelter built at the waiting area next month.
They will have bamboo planted on the riverbank so it will not erode easily.
The calendar expressions make future time explicit, but the verbal morphology contributes contemplated aspect: the relevant caused event has not begun from the chosen viewpoint.
Intention, Scheduling, and Conditional Futures
Because pa-...-an already implies arranging or causing, its contemplated form often sounds strongly intentional. A causer has decided to commission, request, or provide something at a selected endpoint. Yet an explicit schedule is not required.
I'll send the architect a copy once the plan is approved.
The sending is contingent on approval. Filipino does not need a special conditional conjugation: the contemplated form fits because the sending remains unrealized at the reference point.
Belen will have new glasses made for her child on Saturday.
The child is a beneficiary pivot, not the maker. Ni Belen is the causer, ng bagong salamin the thing to be made, and the optician is implicit.
For now, we won't have any building constructed on the part near the cliff.
Hindi muna postpones the plan. The contemplated form remains because the clause concerns an unrealized project, even though that project is negated or deferred.
Same Root, Different Aspect
Keeping the root and participant alignment constant makes the aspect contrast visible.
Joel had a ramp installed at the entrance on Monday.
Joel will have a ramp installed at the entrance on Monday.
The completed pinalagyan presents the installation as achieved; contemplated papalagyan presents it as not yet begun. The endpoint ang pasukan is the pivot in both. English changes tense auxiliaries, while Filipino changes aspect morphology and relies on noong Lunes / sa Lunes for temporal anchoring. The broader relationship between citation and unrealized-event forms is explained in infinitive and contemplated forms.
The same contemplated form can occur in a question about a plan:
Papalagyan ba ninyo ng kamera ang pasukan sa likod?
Are you going to have a camera installed at the rear entrance?
The question particle ba follows the first phrase-sized constituent here. It does not alter voice or aspect.
Short Exchange and Commands
The contemplated form is normal when speakers negotiate arrangements.
βWhere will you have uniforms made for the children? βAt the tailor's near the school.
The wh-expression asks about the service provider or place of making, while ang mga bata remains the beneficiary pivot. A sentence can contain other locations without changing which participant -an selects.
Positive commands generally use the basic form, not the contemplated form:
Palagyan mo ng pangalan ang bawat folder.
Have a name put on each folder.
With huwag, the prohibited action likewise appears in the basic form:
Huwag mong palagyan ng pataba ang mga punla hangga't hindi umuulan.
Don't have fertilizer put on the seedlings until it rains.
That contrast is grammatical, not merely temporal: papalagyan reports or questions a contemplated plan, whereas palagyan is the form selected by ordinary positive and negative directives.
Accepted Variation and Lexical Limits
Alongside papalagyan, many speakers accept palalagyan; alongside papadalhan, padadalhan is also established. The difference reflects which portion of the construction is reduplicated. It is not a dependable difference in tense or politeness. The papa- forms provide a consistent core model, while the alternatives should be recognized as contemporary variation.
Not every root supports both variants, and not every imaginable pa-...-an derivative is idiomatic. Papadalhan can be a routine recipient-oriented βwill send to,β with little felt causative force. Papagawan conventionally concerns commissioning or arranging something for a beneficiary. Papatayuan selects a construction site. These meanings arise from the interaction of root and construction; one prefix cannot guarantee one English translation.
The full pattern also preserves root-specific surface forms: tayo + -an gives tayuan, and gawa gives pagawan, not the noun pagawaan. Learn the root's actual surface paradigm before extending it.
Common Mistakes
Using the completed form with a clearly unrealized plan
Incorrect for the intended future plan β pinatayuan presents the construction as completed.
Next year, we'll have a house built on the lot.
Adding English will to the Filipino verb
β Will-papalagyan nila ng ilaw ang tulay.
Incorrect β Filipino contemplated morphology does not take the English auxiliary as an affix.
β Papalagyan nila ng ilaw ang tulay.
They will have lights installed on the bridge.
Using contemplated morphology in a direct command
β Papalagyan mo ng etiketa ang mga garapon.
Incorrect as a plain command β this form sounds like a statement or question about what you will arrange.
β Palagyan mo ng etiketa ang mga garapon.
Have labels put on the jars.
Misaligning the endpoint and theme
β Papalagyan namin ang alarma sa bodega.
Incorrect for the intended pa-...-an locative alignment β the warehouse should be the pivot and the alarm a non-pivot theme.
β Papalagyan namin ng alarma ang bodega.
We'll have an alarm installed in the warehouse.
Key Takeaways
Contemplated pa-...-an commonly uses papa- and presents a caused event as planned or not yet begun. Its location, recipient, or beneficiary remains the pivot, and future time is inferred or stated separately. Commands use the basic form, negated plans retain contemplated morphology, and accepted reduplication alternatives must be learned by lexical family rather than generated indiscriminately.
