The contemplated member of a mang- actor-voice family keeps the m- series and adds partial reduplication: manghuli → manghuhuli, manghingi → manghihingi, mamili → mamimili. It presents an event as not yet begun—planned, expected, predicted, or viewed prospectively from another point.
Future time is a frequent translation, but contemplated aspect is not an English future tense. It does not agree with person, and it can appear in conditions or future-oriented sequences without an English auxiliary. The actor remains the ang/si pivot. All unlabelled forms below are neutral contemporary Filipino.
Review the distinction between dependent basic forms and projected predicates on infinitive and contemplated forms.
Basic and contemplated forms
Both columns belong to the same lexical family. Reduplication distinguishes an aspect-neutral basic form from an independently projected event.
| Root | Basic / citation | Contemplated | Surface relationship |
|---|---|---|---|
| bili/pili | mamili | mamimili | substituted m remains; mi repeats |
| tahi | manahi | mananahi | substituted n remains; na repeats |
| kuha | manguha | mangunguha | substituted velar nasal remains |
| huli | manghuli | manghuhuli | hu repeats after intact h |
| gupit | manggupit | manggugupit | gu repeats; ngg remains |
| isda | mangisda | mangingisda | established vowel-initial family surface |
Do not insert hyphens into these established surface forms. The table shows relations among whole words; it is not a license to copy visible letters into a novel derivative.
Mamimili si Rina ng mga sangkap pagkatapos niyang kunin ang listahan.
Rina will shop for ingredients after she gets the list.
Mamimili presents the shopping as unbegun. Actor pivot si Rina and theme ng mga sangkap preserve the actor-voice marker frame.
Projection, intention, and scheduling
A future-time adverb often makes the English translation straightforward, but the Filipino form contributes prospective event structure rather than tense alone.
Mananahi si Aling Rosa ng mga kasuotan para sa sayaw sa susunod na linggo.
Aling Rosa will sew the costumes for the dance next week.
Manggugupit si Dario sa munisipyo sa Sabado para sa libreng serbisyo.
Dario will cut hair at the municipal hall on Saturday as part of the free service.
The contemplated forms keep the nasal-substituted or consonant-retaining shapes of their families. Mananahi does not restore root-initial t; manggugupit retains root-initial g after prefix-final ng.
A plan can be denied without changing the verb into a special negative form:
Hindi manghihingi si Lando ng tulong hangga't may ibang paraan.
Lando will not ask for help as long as there is another way.
Hindi negates the projected request. The contemplated verb remains manghihingi, and the requested theme remains ng tulong.
Prospective relations beyond simple future time
Contemplated aspect can be evaluated relative to a condition rather than a calendar date.
Mangunguha lamang kami ng panggatong kung maubos ang tuyong kahoy sa silong.
We will gather firewood only if the dry wood under the house runs out.
Exclusive kami identifies a group that excludes the addressee. Lamang has scope over the conditional gathering, while mangunguha marks it as not begun.
Kapag luminaw ang panahon, mangingisda ulit ang magkapatid sa laot.
When the weather clears, the siblings will fish offshore again.
The time condition supplies the point after which the fishing can begin. Mangingisda is contemplated as a verb here; ulit adds repetition relative to an earlier occasion.
Homographs can belong to different categories
Several contemplated forms are also established agent nouns. Mamimili may mean “will shop/choose” or “shopper/buyer”; mananahi may mean “will sew” or “seamstress/tailor”; mangingisda may mean “will fish” or “fisher.” Syntax resolves the ambiguity.
Mamimili si Lita sa bagsakan bukas ng umaga.
Lita will shop at the wholesale market tomorrow morning.
Maagang dumarating ang mga mamimili sa bagsakan.
The shoppers arrive early at the wholesale market.
In the first, mamimili is the predicate and si Lita is its actor pivot. In the second, plural marker mga marks mamimili as a noun inside the pivot phrase. The shared spelling does not mean that Filipino has converted future tense into a noun; two constructions happen to converge on one form.
Controlled comparison with the basic form
Manghingi ka ng resibo bago umalis sa klinika.
Ask for a receipt before leaving the clinic.
Manghihingi ka ng resibo pagdating mo sa klinika.
You will ask for a receipt when you arrive at the clinic.
Basic manghingi forms a positive command. Contemplated manghihingi makes a statement about an unbegun event. English distinguishes imperative ask from will ask; Filipino uses clause type plus aspect morphology.
A question and short exchange
Mangingisda ba kayo malapit sa isla kapag humupa ang alon?
Will you fish near the island when the waves subside?
Question particle ba follows the predicate and precedes the full pivot pronoun kayo. The verb remains contemplated regardless of whether kayo is plural or respectfully addresses one person.
—Manghuhuli pa ba sila ng pusit mamayang gabi? —Oo, kung hindi uulan nang malakas.
—Will they still catch squid later tonight? —Yes, if it does not rain heavily.
The particle cluster pa ba asks whether the planned activity remains expected. Nang malakas marks manner; it is not the completed prefix nang- of nanghuli.
Lexical restrictions and competing patterns
Contemplated forms must be derived from an attested family. Root tahi supports both manahi/mananahi and magtahi/magtatahi in contemporary usage, with preferences shaped by activity, occupation, and speaker. Neither pair proves that mang- and mag- can be substituted for every root.
Nasal substitution is also lexical. The sound environment strongly predicts the nasal's place, but it does not guarantee deletion of the first root consonant. Compare mananahi, where t is absent, with manggugupit, where g remains. The full paradigm, not an English gloss, is the safe unit to learn.
Common Mistakes
Using the basic form for a plain projected statement
❌ Mamili si Nena ng tela bukas ng hapon.
Incorrect for the intended neutral future statement — basic mamili is not the independent contemplated form.
✅ Mamimili si Nena ng tela bukas ng hapon para sa mga kurtina.
Nena will shop for fabric tomorrow afternoon for the curtains.
Using the incompleted n-series for an unbegun plan
❌ Namimili kami ng binhi sa susunod na Lunes.
Incorrect for the intended unbegun plan — namimili presents an activity from inside or as habitual.
✅ Mamimili kami ng binhi sa susunod na Lunes bago pumunta sa bukid.
We will select seeds next Monday before going to the field.
Over-reduplicating the root
❌ Manghuhuhuli sila ng alimango pagkatapos ng bagyo.
Incorrect — contemplated reduplication copies hu- once.
✅ Manghuhuli sila ng alimango pagkatapos ng bagyo kapag ligtas na.
They will catch crabs after the storm when it is safe.
Adding English person agreement
❌ Manggugupits si Dario sa Sabado para sa mga bata.
Incorrect — Filipino verbs do not add English third-person -s.
✅ Manggugupit si Dario sa Sabado para sa mga bata sa ampunan.
Dario will cut hair on Saturday for the children at the shelter.
Key Takeaways
- Contemplated mang- forms keep the m-series and add family-specific partial reduplication.
- They present an event as unbegun, planned, expected, or prospective rather than simply marking future tense.
- Nasal substitution remains visible in mamimili, mananahi, and mangunguha; retained consonants remain in manggugupit.
- Some contemplated verb forms are homographic with agent nouns, so syntax and markers identify the category.
- Build the form from an attested lexical family and keep its actor-voice participant frame intact.
