The contemplated member of a verbal ma- family retains ma- and repeats the first consonant–vowel sequence of the base: matulog → matutulog, matakot → matatakot, mabasa → mababasa, makita → makikita. It presents a state, perception, successful result, or nonvolitional event as not yet begun or not yet realized.
English frequently uses will, can, or may. None is a fixed translation of ma-. The lexical family and context determine whether the form predicts a state, offers a possibility, or says that an affected entity will be accessible.
Formation
| Basic form | Copied base material | Contemplated structure | Surface form |
|---|---|---|---|
| matulog | tu- | ma + tu + tulog | matutulog |
| matakot | ta- | ma + ta + takot | matatakot |
| matuwa | tu- | ma + tu + tuwa | matutuwa |
| mabasa | ba- | ma + ba + basa | mababasa |
| makita | ki- | ma + ki + kita | makikita |
| mabasag | ba- | ma + ba + basag | mababasag |
Write these forms solidly. The repeated syllable belongs to aspect morphology, so ordinary spelling has no teaching hyphen.
The page on infinitive and contemplated forms compares this contrast across verb families.
A state or event expected to begin
Matutulog ang mga bata pagkatapos ng kuwento.
The children will sleep after the story.
Grandfather will be pleased when he sees the old photographs.
The sleeper and experiencer are pivots. Their states have not begun at the reference point. In the second sentence, completed nakita occurs inside the kapag clause because seeing the photographs is treated as achieved relative to the resulting pleasure.
Contemplated forms can be anchored in an earlier expectation:
Akala ko, matatakot si Nena sa aso, pero nilapitan niya iyon.
I thought Nena would be afraid of the dog, but she approached it.
The feared state was prospective from the earlier viewpoint and never materialized. Matatakot is therefore not simply a future-tense form tied to speech time.
Future ability, visibility, and access
Potential contemplated forms commonly say that an undergoer will be accessible to a perception or action.
You will be able to read the entire report once the page is fixed.
The visitors will be able to see the volcano from the eastern balcony.
Ang buong ulat and ang bulkan are pivots. Reader ninyo and perceiver ng mga bisita are non-pivots, even though English makes them grammatical subjects.
Ability need not be tied to a particular future date. A condition can establish the unrealized possibility:
Mabubuksan mo ang kandado kung iikot mo muna ang susi pakaliwa.
You will be able to open the padlock if you first turn the key to the left.
The successful opening remains unrealized until the condition is met. Mabubuksan contains the lexical suffix -an as well as ma- and reduplicated bu-.
Predicted spontaneous or accidental results
The glass may break if you set it on the edge of the table.
The glass is the pivot and the breaking is predicted as a possible, nonvolitional result. English may better conveys the warning than will, showing that contemplated morphology is not a future auxiliary.
The ink will disappear if the paper is soaked in water.
The inanimate pivot undergoes the projected change. No deliberate actor belongs to mawawala itself.
Controlled comparison: basic versus contemplated
Sleep first before the long trip begins.
You will sleep first before the long trip begins.
Basic matulog is a directive. Contemplated matutulog is a statement or prediction about the addressee. The difference is clause type and event phase, not person agreement.
Similarly, Huwag kang matakot uses the basic form in a prohibition, although the feared reaction lies in the future. Future time alone does not force contemplated aspect.
Negatives, questions, and a short exchange
Tomas will not be able to see the show if he sits at the back.
Negation preserves potential patient alignment: the show is pivot, while ni Tomas is the perceiver.
—Will we be able to hear the speaker from here? —Yes, we will be able to hear them when the door is opened.
Inclusive natin includes both speakers as perceivers. The human perceived participant appears as siya in the answer; maririnig remains contemplated in both turns.
Lexical restrictions and accepted alternatives
The pattern is regular only within an attested family. A root is a family of constructions, and one citation form hides its derivational system. Some frequent forms have conventional future readings broader than transparent ability: makikita kita bukas ordinarily means “I will see you tomorrow.” Context need not emphasize visual capacity.
Actor-potential maka- provides a related but differently aligned alternative. Both makakabasa and the more conservative makababasa occur as contemplated actor-potential forms among contemporary speakers. Patient-potential mababasa has a different frame. A kaya construction—Kaya mong basahin iyon—can state ability explicitly without implying that all these forms are mechanically interchangeable.
Common Mistakes
Keeping both prefixes
❌ Mamatutulog si Ema pagkatapos ng hapunan.
Incorrect — contemplated formation retains ma- once and reduplicates tu- from tulog.
✅ Matutulog si Ema pagkatapos ng hapunan.
Ema will sleep after dinner.
Reduplicating ma- instead of the base
Incorrect — contemplated mabasa copies ba- from basa, producing mababasa.
You will be able to read the small text when you come closer.
Using the basic form as a neutral projected statement
❌ Makita ni Olan ang parola mamayang gabi.
Wrong for the neutral prediction — makita is the basic form.
✅ Makikita ni Olan ang parola mamayang gabi.
Olan will see the lighthouse tonight.
Giving the perceiver pivot marking
Incorrect for ‘Olan will see the lighthouse’ — this reverses the potential patient-voice frame.
Olan will see the lighthouse from the boat.
Key Takeaways
- Contemplated verbal ma- retains ma- and reduplicates the base's first consonant–vowel sequence.
- It presents a state, perception, ability, or result as not yet realized.
- English translations include will, can, and may; none is a fixed meaning of the prefix.
- Basic forms still occur in commands and prohibitions with future reference.
- Potential patient alignment remains visible: the accessible or affected entity is pivot, while the capable participant takes an ng/ni form.
