Coordination joins two or more constituents of the same structural job: nouns with nouns, adjective predicates with adjective predicates, locative phrases with locative phrases, or verbal predicates that share participants. Neutral at adds, o presents alternatives, conversational pero marks contrast, and ngunit is its more careful or formal counterpart, most readily between predicates or clauses.
Filipino often lets coordinated names share sina/nina/kina, and coordinated common nouns can share one outer ang/ng/sa marker. Sharing is licensed by structure, not by a wish to avoid repetition.
Core coordination patterns
| Coordinates | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| common noun phrases | marker + X + at/o + Y | ang tinapay at prutas |
| personal names | sina/nina/kina
| sina Lea at Omar |
| property predicates | X + at + Y + pivot | tahimik at maaliwalas ang silid |
| verbal predicates | verb + at + verb + shared arguments | naglinis at nag-ayos ng silid |
| alternatives | X + o + Y | sa Lunes o Martes |
| contrast | X + pero/ngunit + Y | maikli pero malinaw |
Coordinated noun phrases and marker scope
Dinala ni Cora ang tinapay at prutas sa silid-pulong.
Cora brought the bread and fruit to the meeting room.
One ang scopes over the coordinated patient pivot tinapay at prutas. Repeating the marker—ang tinapay at ang prutas—is also grammatical and can emphasize the items separately.
Dumating sina Lea at Omar bago magsimula ang pagsasanay.
Lea and Omar arrived before the training began.
Plural personal marker sina covers both names. The equally grammatical si Lea at si Omar repeats singular marking and can make each person more individually salient. Do not mix the two strategies as sina Lea at si Omar.
Non-pivot and oblique personal series coordinate similarly: nina Lea at Omar “by/of Lea and Omar,” kina Lea at Omar “to/at Lea and Omar.” The surrounding predicate still determines which marker series is required.
Coordinated modifiers retain their internal linkers
Kailangan natin ng pulang bolpen at asul na sobre para sa pagpaparehistro.
We need a red pen and a blue envelope for registration.
Pula + -ng links to bolpen, while consonant-final asul takes separate na before sobre. Coordination does not remove linkers inside each noun phrase.
When two adjectives jointly modify one noun, the final coordinate links the coordinated description to the noun:
Mahusay at maingat na tagasalin ang hinahanap ng tanggapan.
The office is looking for a skilled and careful translator.
The phrase mahusay at maingat is coordinated, and na connects its final consonant-ending member to tagasalin. Speakers may repeat or restructure modifiers when a long series becomes ambiguous.
Coordinated predicates and shared participants
Tahimik at maaliwalas ang silid sa ikalawang palapag.
The room on the second floor is quiet and airy.
Both adjective predicates apply to one pivot. No copula or ay is required.
Naglinis at nag-ayos ng mga upuan sina Bea at Jun bago dumating ang mga bisita.
Bea and Jun cleaned and arranged the chairs before the visitors arrived.
The actor-voice predicates share actor pivot sina Bea at Jun and non-pivot patient ng mga upuan. Shared material works because both verbs license compatible participant roles. If verbs assign the shared phrase different roles or require different markers, repeat or recast the phrases rather than forcing coordination.
Mabilis at maingat siyang sumagot sa lahat ng tanong.
She answered every question quickly and carefully.
Short pronoun siya follows the complete coordinated manner phrase mabilis at maingat. Clitic placement treats that coordination as the first constituent; inserting the pronoun between mabilis and at maingat would break the coordinated unit.
Neutral order and ay order
Nag-ayos at naglinis ng kusina sina Bea at Jun.
Bea and Jun organized and cleaned the kitchen. (neutral)
Sina Bea at Jun ay nag-ayos at naglinis ng kusina.
As for Bea and Jun, they organized and cleaned the kitchen. (marked topic-first)
The coordinated actor phrase remains the actor pivot in both. Ay makes the pair an established topic; it is not English are. Predicate-first order is the ordinary event report, while the topic-first version suits a contrast with another team or a formal progress report.
Alternatives, contrast, and repeated markers
Sa paaralan o sa munisipyo ba gaganapin ang pagpupulong?
Will the meeting be held at the school or at the municipal hall?
Repeating sa makes two separate alternatives clear. Shared sa paaralan o munisipyo can occur in compact lists, but repetition avoids a reading in which the nouns form one compound-like unit.
—Kape o tsaa ang gusto mo? —Tsaa, pero walang asukal o gatas.
—Would you like coffee or tea? —Tea, but without sugar or milk.
The question coordinates nominal alternatives. The answer omits a recoverable larger predicate and coordinates two items under negative existential walang.
For full independent assertions, coordination belongs to the neighboring coordination of clauses page. The boundary can be subtle because a second predicate may omit a shared participant.
Common Mistakes
Mixing plural and repeated personal markers
❌ Dumating sina Mara at si Nilo pagkatapos ng tanghalian.
Incorrect mixed marking — sina already covers both coordinated names.
✅ Dumating sina Mara at Nilo pagkatapos ng tanghalian.
Mara and Nilo arrived after lunch.
Dumating si Mara at si Nilo is also standard with repeated singular markers.
Omitting linkers inside coordinated noun phrases
❌ Kailangan ko ng pula bolpen at asul sobre.
Incorrect — each adjective must link to the noun it modifies.
✅ Kailangan ko ng pulang bolpen at asul na sobre.
I need a red pen and a blue envelope.
Coordinating unlike grammatical roles
❌ Ibinigay niya ang susi at sa guwardiya.
Incorrect — ang susi is the conveyed theme, while sa guwardiya is the recipient; they cannot form one coordinate phrase.
✅ Ibinigay niya sa guwardiya ang susi at kard.
She gave the guard the key and card.
Copying subject-first order without ay
❌ Sina Ana at Ben naghanda ng pagkain.
Nonstandard as a careful integrated event report — the fronted actor phrase lacks ay.
✅ Naghanda ng pagkain sina Ana at Ben.
Ana and Ben prepared food.
The marked alternative is Sina Ana at Ben ay naghanda ng pagkain.
Key Takeaways
- Coordinate structurally compatible phrases with at or o; use pero/ngunit for contrastive predicates or clauses.
- One marker can scope over coordinated common nouns, while personal names use sina/nina/kina or repeated singular markers.
- Linkers inside each coordinate remain necessary.
- Shared arguments require compatible voice and participant roles.
- Predicate-first order remains neutral; ay turns the coordinated phrase into a marked topic.
