The enclitic muna places one action or state before a relevant next step. Depending on context, English renders it as first, for now, for the moment, in the meantime, or before anything else. Its core is relational: do or maintain this now, with another stage understood afterward.
Muna does not mean “earlier in the past”; kanina and other time expressions do that. It also differs from ordinal una “first.” Muna manages sequencing and temporary commitment from its early particle position.
Its placement follows the broader pattern in enclitic position after the first constituent; this page concentrates on its meaning and scope.
Core meanings and frames
| Pattern | Typical meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| action + muna | do this before the next action | Kumain muna tayo. |
| state/place + muna | use this arrangement temporarily | Dito muna kami. |
| huwag muna | postpone an action; not yet | Huwag muna kayong pumasok. |
| hindi muna | choose not to do something for now | Hindi muna ako sasama. |
| lang muna | limit a temporary choice | Tubig lang muna. |
| po muna | respectful sequencing or softening | Maupo po muna kayo. |
Tapusin muna natin ang talaan bago tayo umuwi.
Let's finish the list before we go home.
The inclusive ng-form actor natin follows muna because it is a longer pronoun. The bago clause makes the later step explicit, but muna can leave it understood.
Dito muna kami habang inaayos ang kabilang silid.
We will stay here for now while the other room is being fixed.
The temporary arrangement is central; muna suggests that the group may move later.
First in a sequence
Muna is common in instructions, plans, and suggestions.
Hugasan mo muna ang mga gulay bago hiwain.
Wash the vegetables before cutting them.
Titingnan muna ng mekaniko ang preno bago magbigay ng halaga.
The mechanic will inspect the brakes before giving a price.
Muna does not change the verb's voice or aspect. Patient/undergoer-voice hugasan selects ang mga gulay; contemplated patient/undergoer-voice titingnan selects ang preno. The particle adds sequence relative to a later action.
The later step need not be spoken when context supplies it:
Sandali muna; hahanapin ko ang resibo.
Wait a moment; I'll look for the receipt.
Here sandali muna requests a temporary pause before the conversation or transaction continues.
For now, not permanently
Muna can limit a decision to the present stage without promising what happens later.
Sa kapatid ko muna titira si Joel habang naghahanap siya ng apartment.
Joel will stay with my sibling for now while he looks for an apartment.
Kape lang muna ang iinumin ko; mamaya na ako kakain.
I'll just have coffee for now; I'll eat later.
The natural cluster lang muna combines limitation and temporary sequencing. Changing muna to lang alone removes the expectation of a later stage: Kape lang ang iinumin ko simply limits the drink to coffee.
Huwag muna and hindi muna
Both postpone something, but they have different clause types. Huwag muna gives a negative command or request. Hindi muna states a present decision or nonoccurrence.
Huwag muna ninyong buksan ang sobre hanggang dumating ang abogado.
Do not open the envelope yet until the lawyer arrives.
Hindi muna namin bubuksan ang sobre habang wala ang abogado.
We will not open the envelope for now while the lawyer is absent.
The first addresses respected or plural actors with ninyo + -ng before basic patient/undergoer-voice buksan. The second reports the exclusive group's contemplated nonaction with namin. English not yet can obscure the command–statement difference.
Position with pronouns and respect
Short ko, mo, ka precede muna; longer pronouns follow it.
Hintayin mo muna ako sa may pasukan.
Wait for me first by the entrance.
Magpahinga muna kayo bago ipagpatuloy ang paglalakad.
Rest first before continuing the walk.
Respectful po commonly precedes muna:
Pakisuri po muna ang pangalan at tirahan sa pormularyo.
Please check the name and address on the form first. (respectful)
These orders come from the Filipino clitic system, not from the location of English first.
Muna versus una
Una is an adjective, noun, or predicate meaning “first.” It can identify rank or order independently. Muna is an enclitic that relates the current step to a later one.
Si Mara ang unang dumating, pero naghintay muna siya sa labas.
Mara was the first to arrive, but she waited outside for a while.
Unang modifies dumating through a linker; muna modifies the sequencing of naghintay. They are not spelling variants.
A natural exchange
—Aalis na ba tayo? —Maghintay muna tayo ng limang minuto; wala pa si Ruben.
—Are we leaving now? —Let's wait five minutes first; Ruben isn't here yet.
The reply uses inclusive tayo because both speakers will wait. Muna places waiting before departure; pa says Ruben's expected arrival has not occurred.
Common Mistakes
❌ Muna basahin mo ang panuto.
Incorrect neutral placement — muna cannot normally begin the clause.
✅ Basahin mo muna ang panuto.
Read the instructions first.
❌ Hintayin muna mo ang tawag ko.
Incorrect cluster order — short mo precedes muna.
✅ Hintayin mo muna ang tawag ko.
Wait for my call first.
❌ Hindi huwag muna kayong umalis.
Incorrect — hindi and huwag cannot be stacked as interchangeable English not.
✅ Huwag muna kayong umalis.
Do not leave yet.
❌ Kahapon muna ako pumunta sa bangko.
Wrong for 'I went to the bank earlier'; muna implies a step before another, not simple past time.
✅ Kanina ako pumunta sa bangko.
I went to the bank earlier today.
Key Takeaways
- Muna places a step or temporary arrangement before an understood later stage.
- It can mean “first,” “for now,” or “for the moment,” but not simple past “earlier.”
- Huwag muna postpones by command; hindi muna reports a temporary decision or nonaction.
- Short pronouns precede muna, while longer pronouns generally follow it.
- Muna and una are distinct: one is an enclitic sequencing particle, the other means “first” as a lexical predicate or modifier.
