ba: Polar Questions

The enclitic ba marks a polar question: a question whose basic alternatives are “yes” and “no.” It can also frame an explicit choice, as in “coffee or tea?” Unlike English, Filipino does not move an auxiliary before the subject. It keeps the ordinary predicate structure and places ba in the early enclitic position.

Ba supplies interrogative force, not tense, aspect, voice, politeness, or doubt. Those meanings come from the rest of the clause and from other particles in its cluster.

Core forms and functions

PatternFunctionExample
predicate + ba + full noun phraseneutral polar questionBukas ba ang tindahan?
predicate + short pronoun + baquestion with clitic participantAalis ka ba?
predicate + na/pa + baquestion about a reached/continuing phaseTapos na ba?
X ba o Y?explicit alternativeNgayon ba o bukas?
wh-word + bainsistence, specificity, or conversational stanceAno ba ang nangyari?
ba + linker -ng → banglinks ba to a following complementTotoo bang sarado?

Bukas ba ang botika tuwing Linggo?

Is the pharmacy open every Sunday?

Dadalhin mo ba ang mga kasangkapan mamayang hapon?

Will you bring the tools this afternoon?

In the second question, dadalhin is in patient/undergoer voice and selects ang mga kasangkapan. Short ng-form actor mo precedes ba. The question particle does not change the voice frame.

💡
Turn a neutral statement into a polar question by adding ba in the early cluster, not by rearranging the clause into English auxiliary–subject order.

Position with pronouns and other particles

Short ko, mo, ka normally precede ba, while longer pronouns normally follow the particle sequence.

Nakita mo ba ang abisong nakapaskil sa pinto?

Did you see the notice posted on the door?

Darating ba sila bago magsimula ang programa?

Will they arrive before the program begins?

Phase particles and respectful po normally precede ba:

Nakapagpahinga ka na ba matapos ang mahabang biyahe?

Have you managed to rest after the long trip?

Kailangan pa po ba ninyo ang orihinal na resibo?

Do you still need the original receipt?

The sequences are ka na ba and pa po ba ninyo. English puts already/still elsewhere and expresses respect lexically or through tone. Filipino packs those relations into an ordered early cluster.

Ba does not choose aspect

The verb keeps the aspect appropriate to the question. Compare a bounded completed event, an ongoing event, and a projected event:

Inayos ba ni Carlo ang sirang bentilador?

Did Carlo repair the broken fan?

Inaayos pa ba ni Carlo ang sirang bentilador?

Is Carlo still repairing the broken fan?

Aayusin ba ni Carlo ang sirang bentilador bukas?

Will Carlo repair the broken fan tomorrow?

Ba stays constant. Patient/undergoer voice and ang sirang bentilador also stay constant; aspect changes the event contour. See aspect in questions for the full contrast.

Intonation-only questions

In conversation, question intonation can mark a polar question without ba, particularly in short checks and echo questions.

Tapos ka na?

Are you finished? (conversational check)

Tapos ka na ba?

Are you finished? (explicit neutral polar question)

Both are natural. The version without ba depends more heavily on intonation and shared context (informal/conversational). The version with ba makes the grammatical question marking overt and is useful in longer or potentially ambiguous clauses.

Bang is ba plus a linker

Bang is not used simply whenever another word follows ba. It is ba + -ng where the construction requires a linker to the following complement.

Totoo bang lilipat sa Cebu ang pamilya ni Dina?

Is it true that Dina's family will move to Cebu?

Mayroon bang sapat na tubig sa tangke?

Is there enough water in the tank?

Compare Aalis ba sila?, where no linker connects ba to sila, so the form remains separate ba.

Alternative questions and wh-questions

Ba can mark the point at which alternatives are being considered:

Sa opisina ba o sa bahay tayo magkikita?

Will we meet at the office or at home?

An information question already contains ano, sino, saan, kailan, or another question word, so ba is not required merely to make it interrogative. When present, it can add insistence, impatience, deliberation, or a request for greater specificity.

Saan ba natin inilagay ang ekstrang susi?

Where exactly did we put the spare key?

Tone decides whether this sounds puzzled, mildly frustrated, or simply engaged. Translating every ba as a separate English word would miss this conversational force.

Negative questions and answers

Hindi ka pa ba nakakatanggap ng tugon mula sa klinika?

Haven't you received a response from the clinic yet?

Bare oo and hindi can be interpreted differently across negative-question habits. A full answer is safest:

—Hindi ka pa ba nakakatanggap ng tugon? —Nakatanggap na ako kaninang umaga.

—Haven't you received a response yet? —I received one this morning.

The answer repeats the relevant proposition instead of asking the listener to infer whether “yes” agrees with the negative wording or asserts a positive fact.

💡
After a negative question, answer with the predicate—Nakatanggap na ako or Hindi pa ako nakakatanggap—when a bare yes/no could be ambiguous.

Common Mistakes

❌ Ba bukas ang tanggapan bukas?

Incorrect — enclitic ba cannot normally stand at the beginning like English is.

✅ Bukas ba ang tanggapan bukas?

Is the office open tomorrow?

❌ Nakita ba mo ang mensahe?

Incorrect cluster order — short mo normally precedes ba.

✅ Nakita mo ba ang mensahe?

Did you see the message?

❌ Tapos ba na kayo?

Unnatural standard order — phase particle na precedes ba.

✅ Tapos na ba kayo?

Are you finished now?

❌ Totoo ba aalis sila bukas?

Incorrect in careful standard Filipino — the complement requires the linker after ba.

✅ Totoo bang aalis sila bukas?

Is it true that they will leave tomorrow?

Key Takeaways

  • Ba marks polar and alternative questions without English-style auxiliary inversion.
  • Short pronouns precede it; na/pa, po, and several other earlier particles normally do too.
  • Voice and aspect remain independent of interrogative ba.
  • Intonation-only questions are common in conversation, while ba makes question force explicit.
  • Bang is ba plus linker -ng, not an automatic spelling before every following word.
