Ordinal Numbers with ika-

Ordinal numbers identify position in a sequence: first, second, third, fourth. Filipino forms a productive series with ika-, with one basic exception: una “first.” The common ikalawa “second” and ikatlo “third” are established shortened forms of the less frequent full ikadalawa and ikatatlo. From four onward, ika- combines transparently with the native cardinal base: ikaapat, ikalima, ikaanim, ikapito.

Ordinals usually modify a following noun through the ordinary linker. That gives unang araw, ikalawang palapag, ikatlong kabanata, ikaapat na pagkakataon. The prefix marks ordinal meaning; the linker connects the complete ordinal to the noun.

The basic ika- series

RankOrdinalBefore a nounExample
1stunaunangunang araw
2ndikalawaikalawangikalawang palapag
3rdikatloikatlongikatlong kabanata
4thikaapatikaapat naikaapat na pila
5thikalimaikalimangikalimang tanong
6thikaanimikaanim naikaanim na baitang
7thikapitoikapitongikapitong upuan
8thikawaloikawalongikawalong pahina
9thikasiyamikasiyam naikasiyam na kalahok
10thikasampuikasampungikasampung taon

Fully spelled ordinals are written solidly, including ikaapat and ikaanim. A hyphen appears when ika- attaches to a digit: ika-4, ika-6, ika-10.

💡
Do not look only at the prefix. The complete ordinal still chooses a linker by its final sound: ikalawang, ikaapat na, ikaanim na.

Cardinal quantity versus ordinal position

Dalawang kabanata ang babasahin natin ngayong linggo.

We will read two chapters this week. (neutral cardinal quantity)

Ang ikalawang kabanata ang babasahin natin ngayong linggo.

We will read the second chapter this week. (neutral ordinal position)

Dalawang counts how many chapters. Ikalawang selects one chapter by its order. English speakers sometimes transfer the bare form two into both jobs; Filipino makes the contrast overt.

Nasa ikalimang palapag ang bagong tanggapan ng kompanya.

The company's new office is on the fifth floor. (neutral)

Ito na ang ikaapat na beses na nagpalit sila ng iskedyul.

This is now the fourth time they have changed the schedule. (neutral)

The ordinal phrase can rank a physical location or count repeated occasions. Beses does not mean that the event happened to a “fourth object”; the entire phrase identifies its position in a series of occurrences.

First is irregular; second and third have shorter forms

The ordinary first ordinal is una, not ikaisa. By contrast, full ikadalawa and ikatatlo are grammatical but less frequent in contemporary usage, while the long-established shortened forms ikalawa and ikatlo are extremely common and are used in this page's main table.

Si Rina ang unang dumating, si Tomas ang ikalawa, at si Ben ang ikatlo.

Rina arrived first, Tomas second, and Ben third. (neutral ranking)

Here the ordered activity and participants are recoverable, so ikalawa and ikatlo can stand without a following noun. Before a noun, the common shorter forms become ikalawang kalahok and ikatlong kalahok; unang kalahok uses the irregular first ordinal.

Another common ordinal series uses pang-: pangunahin/panguna, pangalawa, pangatlo, and later forms such as pang-apat. In everyday sequencing, pangalawa and pangatlo are often more frequent than ikalawa and ikatlo. This page uses ika- because it forms a transparent series for rank, written structure, and dates; the alternatives are accepted, not “bad Filipino.”

Compound ordinals

The prefix attaches to the complete native cardinal expression: ikalabing-isa “eleventh,” ikadalawampu “twentieth,” ikadalawampu't isa “twenty-first.” Preserve the internal hyphen or apostrophe already required by the cardinal.

Nasa ikalabing-isang pahina ang talahanayang hinahanap mo.

The table you are looking for is on the eleventh page. (neutral)

Ikalabing-isa ends in a vowel and takes -ng, producing ikalabing-isang pahina. Higher spelled-out ordinals are accurate but can become visually heavy. In practical documents, pahina 21 is often clearer than forcing a compact digit ordinal before the noun; use ikalawampu't isang pahina when the ordinal meaning itself matters.

Si Mara ang ikadalawampu sa listahan ng mga kwalipikadong aplikante.

Mara is twentieth on the list of qualified applicants. (neutral/formal-neutral)

The ordinal stands before sa listahan, not before a counted noun, so no numeral linker follows it.

Digits require a hyphen

Use ika- with a visible hyphen before digits: ika-8, ika-12, ika-100. The hyphen protects the boundary between letters and figures.

Sa ika-12 ng Hunyo ginugunita ang Araw ng Kalayaan.

Independence Day is commemorated on June 12. (formal-neutral date expression)

The date construction has ika-12 ng Hunyo; it does not insert a spelled linker after the digit. In ordinary prose, fully written ikalabindalawa ng Hunyo is possible but much less economical. See Dates and Calendar Expressions.

Digit ordinals are useful in headings, schedules, dates, and compact administrative text. Fully written ordinals are smoother in running prose at small values: ikatlong pulong rather than ika-3 pulong, unless a document style requires figures.

Borrowed ordinals and register

Spanish-derived primero survives in traditional date expression a-primero and some fixed rankings. English first, second, third is frequent in school labels and (code-switched) speech. These are alternative systems, not suffixes to combine with ika-.

— Pang-ilan ka sa pila? — Ikapito ako, kasunod ni Liza.

— What position are you in the line? — I'm seventh, after Liza. (neutral conversation)

Pang-ilan asks for ordinal position. The answer ikapito stands alone. An English answer such as seventh would be (code-switched); ika-seventh duplicates the ordinal marking.

Negation and comparison

Hindi ito ang unang bersiyon; ang ikatlo ang ipinadala ko sa kliyente.

This is not the first version; I sent the third one to the client. (neutral)

Hindi negates the identificational predicate. Ordinals do not change form for negation, animacy, or definiteness. Phrase markers and context determine which item is being ranked.

💡
Use a cardinal for amount and an ordinal for sequence: tatlong araw “three days,” but ikatlong araw “third day.”

Common Mistakes

1. Forming first mechanically

❌ Ikaisang araw ng pagsasanay ang pinakamahirap.

Incorrect — the ordinary first ordinal is una, not ikaisa.

✅ Unang araw ng pagsasanay ang pinakamahirap.

The first day of training is the hardest. (neutral)

2. Omitting the linker after a consonant-final ordinal

❌ Ito ang ikaapat pagkakataon na naantala ang biyahe.

Incorrect — ikaapat ends in t and needs separate na before pagkakataon.

✅ Ito ang ikaapat na pagkakataon na naantala ang biyahe.

This is the fourth time the trip has been delayed. (neutral)

3. Hyphenating a fully spelled ordinal

❌ Nasa ika-walong pahina ang mapa.

Incorrect — fully spelled ikawalo is one word.

✅ Nasa ikawalong pahina ang mapa.

The map is on the eighth page. (neutral)

4. Omitting the hyphen before a digit

❌ Sa ika12 ng Mayo ang susunod na pagdinig.

Incorrect — ika- before a digit requires a hyphen.

✅ Sa ika-12 ng Mayo ang susunod na pagdinig.

The next hearing is on May 12. (formal-neutral)

5. Doubling ordinal marking across systems

❌ Siya ang ika-third sa paligsahan.

Nonstandard hybrid — ika- and English third both mark ordinal rank.

✅ Siya ang ikatlo sa paligsahan.

They placed third in the competition. (neutral)

Key Takeaways

  • The ordinary first ordinal is irregular una; ikalawa/ikatlo are established shorter forms of full ikadalawa/ikatatlo.
  • An ordinal before a noun still needs the ordinary linker.
  • Fully spelled ordinals are solid; ika- before digits takes a hyphen.
  • Cardinals count items, while ordinals locate an item or occurrence in a sequence.
  • Pang-, Spanish-derived, and English ordinal forms coexist, but do not stack two ordinal systems in one hybrid form.
