Filipino–English code-switching is a skilled, normal part of many bilingual conversations. The error is not switching itself. It is switching without regard for a formal document's audience, language requirement, terminology policy, or need for consistent interpretation. A sentence that is excellent office Taglish can still fail a Filipino-only report brief.
Control means making deliberate choices: retain an official or technical English term when precision requires it, define it for readers, use an established Filipino equivalent where one is natural, and keep voice, markers, linkers, and syntax coherent.
Match the switch to the setting

A natural conversation may need a formal recast

This is ordinary bilingual workplace speech for many speakers. It has Filipino voice morphology, pronouns, paki-, and na lang around English material. In a Filipino-only memorandum, recast the message rather than replacing individual words mechanically:
Naipadala ko na ang binagong dokumento. Pakisuri ito bago ang pagpupulong.
I have sent the revised document. Please review it before the meeting. (formal Filipino)
The formal version splits the dense conversational turn into two clear sentences. Naipadala presents achieved conveyance, binagong dokumento uses a linked modifier, and pakisuri retains a conventional request frame.
Retain technical terms deliberately
Some fields use English labels because they are official, internationally shared, or more recognizable to the intended expert audience. A formal Filipino text can define the term at first mention.
Gagamitin sa pag-aaral ang machine learning, isang paraang awtomatikong natututo mula sa mga padron sa datos.
The study will use machine learning, a method that learns automatically from patterns in data. (academic, technical term defined at first mention)
After the definition, consistent use of machine learning may be clearer than alternating unpredictably among several translations. This is controlled terminology, not careless switching.
Official titles and quoted interface labels may also remain in English:
Piliin ang “Submit Application” sa huling pahina ng portal.
Select “Submit Application” on the last page of the portal. (formal instruction quoting an English interface label)
Quotation marks tell the reader that the phrase reproduces what appears on screen. Translating the button label would make it harder to locate.
Established mixed verbs remain register-sensitive
English roots with Filipino affixes are common in conversation (informal, code-switched).
Na-email ko na sa iyo ang mga larawan, pero hindi pa na-upload ang bidyo.
I've emailed you the photos, but the video hasn't been uploaded yet. (informal, code-switched: email, upload)
The forms are governed by Filipino grammar: ko is the non-pivot actor, ang bidyo the patient pivot, and hindi pa scopes over the achieved-result form. A formal Filipino-only version can use a paraphrase:
Naipadala ko na sa iyo sa pamamagitan ng email ang mga larawan, ngunit hindi pa nailalagay sa portal ang bidyo.
I have sent you the photos by email, but the video has not yet been placed on the portal. (formal Filipino)
Not every English root accepts every Filipino affix. Conventional mag-email or i-upload does not license forms invented on the spot. When usage is uncertain, select an attested Filipino predicate or rewrite the action.
Keep terminology stable
A document becomes harder to follow when one concept is called aplikasyon, application, request, and kahilingan without a meaningful distinction. Choose a term based on genre, define it, and keep it stable.
Sa patnubay na ito, ang kahilingan ay tumutukoy sa pormularyong isinusumite upang humingi ng serbisyo.
In this guide, request refers to the form submitted to ask for a service. (formal definition)
If the institution's official object is called an Application Form, retain the title, then specify the shorter Filipino label used throughout. Consistency matters more than maximal replacement.
Mixing registers can obscure stance
Elevated connectors, casual particles, texting abbreviations, and spontaneous English insertions can pull a sentence in conflicting directions.
Samakatuwid, i-check na lang natin ASAP iyong pending request.
Therefore, let's just check the pending request ASAP. (mixed-register draft: formal connector with casual and English workplace shorthand)
Samakatuwid, suriin natin agad ang kahilingang hindi pa natutugunan.

The first version can be humorous or marked in conversation, but it lacks a stable formal voice. The second chooses a formal connector, standard predicate, and explicit relative description.
Questions and negatives still follow Filipino grammar
Code-switching does not suspend particles or participant marking.
Hindi pa ba na-review ng pangkat ang final draft?
Hasn't the team reviewed the final draft yet? (informal, code-switched: review, final draft)
Hindi pa ba nasusuri ng pangkat ang pinal na borador?
Hasn't the team reviewed the final draft yet? (formal Filipino)
Both have Filipino negative and question ordering. The difference is register and lexical selection, not basic clause architecture.
An editorial exchange
—Maaari bang panatilihin ang terminong “open-source software”? —Oo, ngunit ipaliwanag natin ito sa unang gamit at panatilihin ang iisang anyo sa buong ulat.
—May we retain the term “open-source software”? —Yes, but let's explain it at first use and keep one form throughout the report. (formal editorial exchange with quoted technical English)
